Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Thanks for uploading File:Function Rooms Melbourne.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

- It is fine to upload this sort of image if you own the copyright and have the rights to release it on a free license. But the sources that you cite show this image as copyrighted (eg http://www.flickr.com/photos/party-venues/5064405304/ All Rights Reserved). You either need to show you have permission if you want to release it here too. (eg show that you are the photographer (or rights holder), or have permission from them) --Tony Wills (talk) 00:03, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Tony. I have changed my settings in Flickr to reflect this.
- Fast work :-). Great that you have demonstrated the link between your Commons account and the Flickr one. It would be simplest if both the image here and on flickr had the same license, there doesn't seem to be much sense in having it licensed differently elsewhere (it also prevents ongoing probelms as later people challenge the validity of the license after finding it elsewhere with a different license).
- Also, having a link back to the party-venue website means that people will also want to compare licensing here with the licensing or copyright on the website. Although only a thumbnail version ([1]) appears to be on that website, it will still cause problems (people here are very careful that our images really are free). So, especially if you are uploading multiple images, it will save a lot of ongoing effort if you send a message to the OTRS system (follow instruction linked to in the box above), stating something to the effect that all images that this account uploads (that might also be found on your website and flickr account, possibly with different licenses) are indeed licensed cc-by-sa (or whatever valid Commons license that you choose). That email should really be from an email address associated with the website (http://www.partyhelp.com.au/) as evidence that you are who you say you are. All this ensures that the company recognises that it really is giving away these images under a free license and anyone can use them in any way including other commercial companies. Hope that helps :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 02:59, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks again. Apologies for the headaches. I thought I had the right license and have changed this image in Flickr to match the license here. Will read up on it a bit more before adding more images.
