Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Please give images better names[edit]

I noticed you've uploaded [[:{{{1}}}]] and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error. Please give uploaded files meaningful names. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the file is about without actually looking at it. I suggest you rename your image with an intuitive name that describes the file itself. Thanks, and happy editing!

Little mermaid[edit]

Hello Jeancaffou. Unfortunately, the Little Mermaid is indeed copyrighted, and other images of it have been deleted (see old version of gallery) according to Commons:Derivative works and COMMONS:FOP#Denmark. Of course I don't agree with such a strictness, and I somewhat believe it's a violation of rights (of the people who want to take and publish photos), but that's the Danish law and we gotta follow. Please see the warning on the mermaid's page and some deletion requests about similar pictures as well as this. You can bring it up in the Village pump or elsewhere, if you want a discussion to re-open, but I doubt the result will be different - Badseed ^talk 15:54, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see. So, as a tourist, taking photos of this is now forbidden or ...? And since this is copyrighted, no article of the Mermaid statue should have a photograph, to illustrate the article? If this is the case, aren't for example, buildings copyrighted by their architects and so photos of it are a copyright violation? This is a very unreasonable prohibition.

No, taking photos as a tourist (for personal use or as a souvenir) technically is not forbidden. What is forbidden is the reproduction of the image, and its free licensing, especially for commercial purposes (and remember that a condition for inclusion in Commons is the permission for commercial use). That's why we're left with only 2 "photos of the mermaid" that don't show the mermaid exactly. Another famous similar case here in Commons is the Atomium, whose pictorial reproduction is forbidden as it is copyrighted. Also, many images with works of French architects were deleted lately (as there's no FOP in France). As I said, I agree the laws are extreme and unreasonable, and I wish we had the power to do otherwise, but in most cases we can't.
