First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Weird_Al_Yankovic.jpg. This image is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org).

Unless the permission information is given, the image may be speedy deleted after seven days. Thank you. Cecil (talk) 08:49, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cecil, I just ran across it with a "copy to commons" tag, and did what it said. Looks like that tag was applied incorrectly. How should I go about fixing it, since I've never been in contact with the photographer or uploader before? Just email 'em out of the blue? Jclemens (talk) 18:22, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty much, yes. The uploader seems to be still occasionally active on enwiki, so you could ask them on their enwiki talk page. A pointer to Commons:OTRS and/or Commons:Email templates may be helpful. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 13:34, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answering the question, Ilmari. Jclemens, I hope everything was clarified, otherwise don't hesitate to ask. Since the weekend is over I should be online again. And sorry for overlooking your question here. -- Cecil (talk) 23:28, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Wikipedia User:Rinpoche talk page[edit]

Why did User: Spartaz delete my user talk page on Wikipedia? My account was blocked indefinitely by User:Fram and I left a polite message thanking him or her and explaining that my monniker 'Rinpoche' (an intensely private matter) was indicated by hovering the mouse over the image of Mount Kailash on my Userpage. I also added an image of Nikos Kazantzakis' grave with short quotations from John Banville's The Sea and Jon Stallworthy's The Future Guest and I was surprised to find the entire page deleted by Spartaz the following day.

What was the reason for that?

I should appreciate an explanation. You will appreciate that I can't use Wikipedia itself to contact you.

I understand User:Hans Adler thinks I am mentally ill, a view I take it shared by your community since I saw no repudiation by any of them rather than a warning to Hans Adler not to be uncivil in expressing that judgement and risk a block. I've asked him to explain on behalf of your community why treating me like this helps.

Thank you. Rinpoche (talk) 11:57, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not my doing. I suggest you ask Spartaz. Cheers, Jclemens (talk) 14:43, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lauren Brooke images[edit]

Hi Jclemens, are you an OTRS volunteer? [1]. If yes, it would be helpful to put that on your userpage. Though I have no interest at all in these Lauren Brooke images, would renaming the file be acceptable for her? --Túrelio (talk) 08:35, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am. You're right--I'll add that to my Commons user page. I believe renaming the files to take out the "AVN" and removing them from the associated category would satisfy the user, but since I moved the OTRS ticket to the Sister Projects::Commons queue, I can no longer access it. Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. — Tanvir | Talk ] 05:35, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Cheers, Jclemens (talk) 04:32, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jclemens, I have just taken a look at this animated GIF and noticed that you granted a CC-BY-SA/GFDL license to something you have derived from the Wikipedia logo which is not free but {{Copyright by Wikimedia}}. This is one of the very few exceptions where files at Commons do not conform to COM:L but stay fully copyrighted. In principle, all derivations from these logos require a permission from the WMF. I've just tried to fix it and added links to the logos this GIF appears to be derived from. Please take a look at the changes I made. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 05:26, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that should work fine. You know, I learned a great deal more about copyright as an OTRS volunteer, but it never occurred to me that that compilation was claimed incorrectly--I don't think I've touched that gif in three years or more. Thanks for fixing it for me. Jclemens (talk) 05:35, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jclemens, this file is derived from File:Gnome-system.png which is licensed under {{GPL}}. You cannot license your derivation under a {{GFDL}} license as they are not compatible. And you cannot combine derivations of {{GPL}} and {{GFDL}} (see File:Vandalproof.png) into one work. Fortunately, it can be argued that the latter is just integrated de minimis into your derived work. Hence, it can be kept but its license should be fixed from {{Self|GFDL|migration=relicense}} to {{GPL}}. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 05:37, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, what? You can't legally combine GPL and GFDL into one work? That's... nonintuitive. At any rate, I've fixed the license per your advice. Jclemens (talk) 05:46, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jclemens, thanks for fixing. Yes, indeed there a lot of nonintuitive things in regard to licenses. This is one of the reasons why many uploaders put their files under multiple free licenses to ease possible reuse. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 06:15, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
