Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Ecclesiastical heraldry

Hola!

--SajoR (talk) 00:11, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello! Do you speak Spanish?

I see that you are also interested in ecclesiastical heraldry, glad to see that the tassels and galero I draw are to its liking. I just want to give some advice, seeing his work I notice that you do not drive a color palette, I see that manages various shades of red, blue, green, I recommend that you set the tone he used in all his shields. I use the colors recommended by the Workshop Heraldry Spanish Wikipedia[2], I recommend and all our shields would be unified in tone, giving an air standard encyclopedia in ecclesiastical heraldry. You are free to choose the colors you like, but please do not choose those strong tones, dark or extravagant, they really are not heraldic colors.

I also see that you do not work in layers, I recommend you use them, are helpful. You can put the elements of the layer invisible (eye closed) while you work, also can be locked to keep it from moving (closed padlock). To see the layers click this icon, in my templates see a list of layers, this is how I work.

About the size of the lines. The outline or edge of the shield is thicker line, not be exceeded or equaled by the other lines. For the outline I use 4px thick. For the internal division of the shield 2px use. For the other elements of the shield (furniture and fittings) varied between 0.5 px to 2px, that I determined according to the size and complexity of the figure. Any question can ask me on my talk. --SajoR (talk) 00:11, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I am sorry, I do not speak Spanish. I used to pick colors from the official coat of arms. I did not know that there was a wiki standard for that. I will follow this hereafter. I will also use your guidelines regarding layers and line thickness. --Jayarathina (talk) 05:08, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Message translated by google translator Hola, lo siento, yo no hablo español. --Jayarathina (talk) 05:08, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

I bet that the dots on the yellow areas are due to heraldic "hatching" conventions, and are not part of the actual coat of arms (see File:Tinctures.svg, File:Coa Illustration Tinctures Eng.svg etc,).

P.S. Regarding the section above, there are not really standard RGB colors corresponding to heraldic tinctures (especially not for images to be used on English Wikipedia), and I would strongly advise against using any RGB color other than "#FFFFF" for heraldic "argent", since the only real valid reason to use anything other than pure white is to simulate a silvery metallic appearance, and an area of "flat" uniform color on a computer monitor can never look metallic... AnonMoos (talk) 19:33, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Thanks a lot for your guidance. I referred this Image when designing that coat of arms. As you can see, it had dots and I tried to replicate it. But anyway, I did not know at that time Wikipedia had standards for such things. And User:SajoR has pointed out that there are some standards. You can see that in my above conversation with him. I am trying my best to comply with them. But I am still learning. --Jayarathina (talk) 19:48, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
They're Spanish Wikipedia standards, not Commons standards or English Wikipedia standards, and if they advise using anything other than pure white for heraldic "argent", I would tend to disagree with them. In regards to your link, I'm not a Facebook user, and it doesn't like my browser anyway... AnonMoos (talk) 19:58, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Coat of Arms of Pope Francis

Hi Jayarathina, sorry for disturbing you. ‎Poznaniak has changed the motto of Pope Francis's CoA putting it in the right font, but doing so he has inadvertently reverted the CoA to the version with the incorrect mitra, canceling your changes. Could you do them again, please? --InfattiVedeteCheViDice (talk) 20:43, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. --InfattiVedeteCheViDice (talk) 07:01, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Poznaniak (dyskusja) 10:44, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
This is not a matter of personal taste. I don't think you understand the difference between a painting and a vector. I don't understand your language, Using Google translation, which of-course is not reliable, you have said that the original image was done in Photoshop, come on. That's impossible. You seem to have traced the image from the official source using a vector editor. What is the problem to have it like this? BTW I am not going to revert it, if you want, please go ahead and do it yourself. --Jayarathina (talk) 12:46, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Takie działanie to OR. Poznaniak (dyskusja) 19:19, 19 March 2013 (UTC) P.S.
The modifications does not have enough change to qualify for a new file. I think that will become a duplicate copy and will be nominated for deletion. And also it is reasonable is to build consensus to keep this version rather than engaging in edit war. :) --Jayarathina (talk) 17:37, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
But what should be consulted? The pattern of CoA is not really a great work, and has some failures. The same we can say about Tower of Pisa, and we don't correct the Tower. A mitre of the CoA has a thicker border, but it's the official pattern why should be change that? I understand that You have corrected the CoA and it's better, but official version is with thick border around mitre. JDavid (talk) 19:53, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jayarathina

I just seen your vector image drawing skills excellent !!!. There are very few Indian user with expert level in vector graphics,so you may help us by converting some of the Indian state seals in to SVG [4] My humble request .Thank You < 2013 (UTC)
Note: Some of them are already converted
Waiting for your reply cheers Perumalism Chat 16:51, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I am really sorry, I am not that much talented in creating vectors. I just rearrange already existing templates available in commons to create coat-of-arms. I do not know how to "create" new images from scratch. I hope you understand. --Jayarathina (talk) 05:08, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Ecclesiastical heraldry

Hola/Hello Jayarathina!

Online translation: Watch this video carefully, this is how I make the coats of arms, it is important to work with layers, greatly facilitate the work, and look especially as I set the text on the parchment.

--SajoR (talk) 18:09, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Your edit may have seemed logical, but Category:Latin_mottos_in_heraldry is for mottos outside the shield, while Category:Latin_language_words_in_heraldry is for Latin words actually on the shield, so one is not really a subset of the other... AnonMoos (talk) 09:00, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
