Windsor[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you've made numerous Windsor-related edits recently, and have a few questions/comments about some of them.

First, you've added some files to Windsor-related categories despite the fact they are about other municipalities in Essex County (eg - Amherstburg, Leamington) or in Michigan (eg - File:Detroit fireboats try to extinguish the burning Belle Island Bridge, 1915.png). I've reverted the few that I've found so far.

Second, you've moved categories to a disambiguated name though no such disambiguation was needed. For example, Category:Malden Park to Category:Malden Park in Windsor, Ontario; we only add these disambiguators if there are other entities with the same name that requires us to distinguish them in some way. Another example is Category:Assumption Park (Windsor, Ontario) to Category:Assumption Park in Windsor, Ontario; the standard on Commons is to use the format Category:Assumption Park (Windsor, Ontario) or Category:Assumption Park, Windsor, Ontario when disambiguation is required. The format using 'in' is reserved for general categories (Category:Parks in Windsor, Ontario), specific categories, such as a particular park, use the comma or parentheses disambiguators. Is there a reason you're doing this?

Third, thanks for all your other edits. Mindmatrix 14:05, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I'm a longtime Wikipedia user but not so much Commons. I'm still kinda figuring it out. I'd quit Wikipedia for a while as they censor everything as corporatocracy propaganda. I've been trying to sort through the miscellaneous Windsor stuff, reorganizing as I go. I was trying to make it all as uniform as possible - thus the "in Windsor, Ontario" after everything, though I'm not quite as good as I'd like. For example "in Windsor, Ontario" vs "of Windsor, Ontario", or the "Boats in Windsor, Ontario" which after a while I changed my mind and was going to go back and redo them as "Boats in the Detroit River". That's my (feeble) OCD logic to it as I go, so far. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 14:15, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you're ever stuck for naming, check the category tree for a major city, such as Category:Toronto, and emulate that. For example, see Category:Water transport in Toronto for ideas about boat category naming.
Great idea.
I also just noticed you've nominated for deletion a few categories (redirects left over from moves). When you do so, you need to add a reason, so instead of {{delete}}, use {{delete|reason=Blah blah blah}}
My lazy bad.
I may undo some of you category naming changes. I also noticed that you moved Category:Riverfront Festival Plaza to Category:Civic Terrace and Riverfront Festival Plaza in Windsor, Ontario and blanked Category:Civic Terrace. Aren't these two places distinct (but adjacent to each other)? Checking maps etc, I see the waterfront has Great Western Park, Festival Plaza, Civic Terrace, Dieppe Gardens, Steamboat Wharf, and other areas. I don't know if these have a catch-all name, say "Windsor Waterfront", under which they can all be grouped. Mindmatrix 14:49, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know right! All the parks flow together. I was trying to consolidate and simplify. Waterfront is good, but at least third of Windsor is surrounded by water and I avoided that. So too with Riverside or Riverfront. I didn't like it when I did it, only as it was too long. But it was listed on Wikipedia as "Civic Terrace and Festival Plaza", yet that wasn't quite right either. Now I wonder what is proper. I bow to your expertise and follow your lead.
BTW: Category:Boats in Windsor, Ontario is fine. Category:Boats in the Detroit River is also fine; you could add Category:Boats in Windsor, Ontario, Category:Boats in Detroit, Category:Boats in Belle Isle, Category:Boats in Amherstburg and so on to that category, if and when they are created. Mindmatrix 15:06, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's difficult to say who's boats are where exactly - but they're all in the Detroit River (or at least categorized as such). I'd prefer to stay away from the territorial stuff. It was already too much to go through the Detroit River image to pick out all with boats.
Also, is there any chance they'll ever develop batch actions, check boxes, or drag and drop? ~ JasonCarswell (talk)
Go to preferences, click the gadgets tab, and search for "VisualFileChange". Once you've enabled it, a "perform batch task" will be added to the "Tools" menu at left. Warning: this tool can screw things up in a hurry, and its misuse will (probably) get you blocked. All edits using this tool are tagged. Mindmatrix 14:49, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will try to redo all the "Boats in Windsor, Ontario" to "Boats in the Detroit River" which will save you undoing some of my errors - I hope. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 15:08, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you're only using the tool to recategorize pages, use Cat-a-lot instead (also listed in your Gadgets). It is specifically designed for this, and is a heck of a lot simpler. Once enabled, go to a category, and check the bottom right corner for "Cat-a-lot". Clicking it will pop up a menu. When the menu is showing, click all files you want to move (or, the first one, and Shift+mouse click the last one to select a series of images). Once you've selected your files, navigate to the correct directory in the menu, and click "-" to remove the category from those files, "+" to add it, and the arrow icon to move it there. See Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot for more details, photos, and a video about the tool. With that said, I think the Category:Boats in Windsor, Ontario is a good category and should be retained. Mindmatrix 15:44, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also, also, please point me to pages where I can learn about categories. In particular I'd like to configure short cuts to save typing and learn about redirects. Redirects like "B&W photos" and "Swans" automatically get moved to "Black and white photographs" and "Cygnus". I'd like to set it up for things like "View of Windsor from Detroit" would shift to "Views of Windsor from Detroit". ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 14:31, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See Commons:Categories. The automatic redirects occur with categories that use a {{Categoryredirect}} template. For example, Category:B&W photos has the text {{category redirect|Black and white photographs}}. When "B&W photos" is entered using HotCat or other tools, it will automatically update to the redirect target. In your case, you'd need to create Category:View of Windsor from Detroit with the appropriate target. Note that these redirects need to be generally useful (such as a singular to plural redirect, or well-known abbreviations); those that aren't will be deleted. Mindmatrix 14:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks immensely. I spent ages looking for just that info to no avail. And thanks again for all your help. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 15:08, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Just a heads up that you can't copy images from other websites (even city websites) unless they are freely licenced. See Commons:Licensing for the gory details about that. This one is on a page at the City of Windsor that has a copyright notice attached, so unfortunately I've had to nominate it for deletion as a copyright violation. (You can copy from sites such as Flickr, so long as the image copied is freely licenced by the original author, but watch out for Flickrwashing.) Mindmatrix 20:57, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Recursive categorization[edit]

And one more note...don't add categories such that they create a recursive loop. For example, you added Category:Parks in Windsor, Ontario to Category:Nature of Windsor, Ontario , but the parks category was already in the nature category. This results in an infinite recursion for the category tree. Same can be said for deeper recursion (eg - Nature -> Plants -> Bird nests -> Nature). As a rule, the deeper you go into a category tree, the more specific the subjects become; so add Category:Nature of Windsor, Ontario to Category:Parks in Windsor, Ontario, because a park is a natural element, but don't add Category:Nature of Windsor, Ontario to Category:Parks in Windsor, Ontario, because nature is not a type of municipal park. Mindmatrix 21:13, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

~ Meta-Thanks. ~ 216.8.131.140 04:02, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of notes[edit]

Hi once again. I wanted to mention a few things:

My apologies for the point form, but I figured this would be easier to sift through than a wall of text. Mindmatrix 22:12, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mindmatrix: Thanks for the feedback. All good points. I prefer point form in many cases. I've been through all the images under Windsor, Ontario and feel pretty much done. The history by year/decade/century was the last section I got to by accident or luck. In part because it looked large and daunting. If I was even more crazy I'd go through them all again and add them all to their appropriate year/decade/century (where appropriately applicable), but my OCD feels worn out. Sometimes Windsorites claim everything in the greater Windsor area (ie. Essex County, Boblo, or views of Detroit). I certainly felt at times like I was over-categorizing but figured that for the most part I was simply making it more precise and the extra meta-categories wouldn't hurt. Also, I was following the "trend" of what was already there. For example, all of the heritage houses with one image in each category seems ridic. Personally I'd necessitate at least two images to qualify for it's own category - especially when the category names are so short and non-descriptive. They're also confusing - some are addresses and some are named for their famous former owners. Anyway I'm kinda done, unless there's mistakes or things you'd like me to go back and address. I initially wanted to transfer some user:jodelli@Flickr images to Commons, but got distracted. I still want to but I think I need a break and hope to get back to that a little later and be productive in my other lives. Let me know if you need anything and thanks for the assistance. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 13:53, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for all your work on this. I agree about the single-file directories, but if there's a good chance they'll receive more files in the future, there's little harm in it (and this is often the case for building-related categories). Like you, I wait until there's about 2-3 files to create a category.
In case you don't know, there's a tool to transfer files from Flickr - see Flickr2Commons. You'll need to authenticate in order to use it. If you do use it, please check to ensure that the files in question haven't been uploaded yet (I usually check a small subset of the files from a set), and exclude those that aren't particularly useful. You will invariably upload duplicates with the tool, which will be deleted. Mindmatrix 20:07, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Category:Artistic_photographs_in_Windsor,_Ontario has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
