Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Donehoo-Brannen House

You created Category:Donehoo-Brannen House, with three photos - two of the house (mine) and one of signage (by someone else). I don't see that sign in the streetview around the house. It seems like a private residence. Bubba73 (talk) 15:23, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Actually the information in the photo says that it is the James Alonzo Brannen House, which is a different house. Bubba73 (talk) 15:27, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

I looked at the street view for James Alonzo Brannen House, and that sign is actually two houses north of the James Alonzo Brannen House. If I remember correctly, the coordinates originally were on that house, not the correct one. Bubba73 (talk) 19:09, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Bubba73 In that case, would it be accurate to have that image of the sign in "Category:National Register of Historic Places in Bulloch County, Georgia" if its not related to the James Alonzo Brannen House? No, it should not be in that category. I just looked back at the history of the article, and in 2017 I posted a photo of the building at the chamber of commerce, thinking it was the building based on the address or coordinates. Can you provide more information about the en:provenance of the statue shown in this photo. There's no unrestricted freedom of panorama for 3D works of art in the United States as explained here which means that there's a good possibiliy the the statue itself may still be under copyright protection. As the person who took this photo, you would own the copyright on the photo itself, but it would be considered a derivative work which means that the copyright of the statue needs to be considered; so, unless you're also the artist who created the statue, you aren't going to own the copyright over it. If the statue is still under copyright protection, you can't upload a photo of it to Commons without the consent of its copyright holder as explained here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:52, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

Photos of 3D works of art

Hi JJonahJackalope. You seem to have uploaded a number of photos of 3D works of art over the years as your "own work". While it's true that the photo you took is your "own work", the same cannot really be said about the statues, etc. you've photographed, unless you also are the artist who created them. A photo of a 3D object is generally considered to be a derivative work under US copyright law, which means that there are two copyrights that often need to be considered: one for the photo and one for the work. Commons requires that such photos be 100% free as explained COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder and there is no automatic freedom of panorama for 3D works of art (even publically displayed ones) in the US per COM:FOP United States. If some of the photos you uploaded are of works that are for some reason or another deemed to be in the public domain, then this is not such a big deal because the work is no longer protected by copyright; on the other hand, some works (particularly those installed since 1978) are automatically considered protected by copyright and Commons can't keep any images of these without the consent of the copyright holder of the work. If you can go back and check you uploads and provide as much information about the en:provenance of the photographed work, it will make it much easier to sort things out. Otherwise, other Commons editors will need to do so and tag or nominate those where consent is needed for speedy deletion/deletion.
