Welcome

Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Innotata!

Thanks for removing the watermark from one of the pictures here. Do you think you can do that for the others: I'm trying to get a good article out of the English Wikipedia page for this species. Innotata (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

No problem. It's done. --CHristoPHE 19:45, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Checklist anonymous edits (COM:CVU)

Hi Innotata,

As you've probably noticed, since this week the patrolling functionality has been enabled for all edits, no longer just for page creations (hence the Sitenotice). This enables us to track, for example, anonymous edits on Commons. I'd like to invite you to check out the Anonymous edits list and maybe patrol part of a day. I've made a short video tutorial it to address some things (you can find it on right here). See also the updated Commons:Patrol.
If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage, my talkpage or on IRC. --Krinkletalk 16:12, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

I dont know your exact goal, if you want to do this for all files... well, Category:PD-Art (PD-old) is waiting. There is no need to replace the correct and apropriate tag PD-art which is machine readable and translated to 30 languages with one sentence in one language. If you like to add PD-1923 or similar tags please do so if this is required, but leave the PD-art tag alone. --Martin H. (talk) 01:05, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't know your exact goal, either. As far as explaining the copyright status in France, PD-old-70 doesn't do that, and shouldn't since so many countries have this copyright term. Certainly it is hard to add the correct licenses here with Commons's current bunch, but I can't see what is wrong with (not PD-1923), which explains that it is PD in the US, as required for Commons, and in countries with a copyright term of so many (80, here) years after the death of the author. —innotata 01:10, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I forgot that PD-old is used as default in PD-art. So that is supposed to be emptied eventually. On consideration, I'll stop pushing a change at this file. No arrangement is satisfactory here; perhaps the best thing to do would be to ask for changes to the license templates. —innotata 01:18, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Chaffinch

For your information: There was no need to change this. One way of getting a file reviewed that is not from flickr is to add flickrreview, then the bot will note that it is not from flickr, then it will be manually reviewed and hopefully the reviewer will put a general review template on it. I probably would no add anything outside of the template, because it might not be removed; I have started putting a comment with the same meaning in the edit summary. was a young house sparrow, I´m sure about it. Best regards, --4028mdk09 (talk) 16:39, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

It looks completely different from a young House Sparrow, with its thin bill, and its plumage, especially the black. It looks like young tit to me, and I've submitted it for ID at the English Wikipedia's WikiProject Birds. —innotata 16:49, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I am sure looking at one of the parents feeding - unfortunately I wasn´t able to take a sharp picture. :( --4028mdk09 (talk) 17:06, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
You mean that the photo is a parent? It does look like it could be an unusual Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus, Feldsperling) adult or older juvenile, now that I think about it, but not a House Sparrow. —innotata 17:12, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I think that ID is good—Eurasian Tree Sparrows can have pretty slim bills, as I see looking at photos on the English page. —innotata 17:13, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, my english is very bad indeed - the photo surely shows a young one, loudly beg to be fed. And the adult one I only saw feeding looks like a quite normal House sparrow to me. But you may be right - it could be a Passer montanus. So far I didn´t know some of them living in the neighbourhood. Thanks a lot! --4028mdk09 (talk) 17:19, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Category:Zoos in the United States

"Category:Zoos in the United States" is a useful flatlist cat and should be kept. "Category:Zoos by state" is a metacat. I have put the zoos back into their proper categories. Snowmanradio (talk) 10:55, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

This doesn't make any sense, but I'll leave it to you. —innotata 14:47, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
I may have misunderstood what a metacat is. I will think about it for a while. Snowmanradio (talk) 00:50, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
There are some higher cat called "Category:People by name", "Category:People of India by name", and so on, that have been created to be flat lists of the higher cats. Perhaps I should call it "Category:Zoos of the United States by name". I think that it would be a useful flat list to keep. That makes sense to me. Snowmanradio (talk) 11:14, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Here are more examples Category:Ships by name and Category:Ships by IMO number. Snowmanradio (talk) 10:45, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
After thinking about it and looking at other category structures, I have made a metacat "Category:Zoos in the United States by name" to make a new flatlist which replaces "Category:Zoos in the United States". Snowmanradio (talk) 11:11, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Weberknecht-2010-07-23.ogv

Hello Innotata, please be not more royalist than the king. You are right "Weberknecht" is the German word for the Opiliones with a few thousands species. But I think the exact binomial scientific name of the species described the object of the video much more better then the unspecific German name of a taxonomical order. Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 20:16, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

The file name with "Weberknecht" is descriptive, and it is not meaningless, nor does it imply that it is not identified, so I don't see a justification for moving it. However, the file renaming guidelines are very unclear on this, and I think it would be good to bring this up there, so this can be clarified. —innotata 23:22, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I suggested that you make more attention to the caption. We need to put one in English. For animals it would be very useful to the Latin name in the caption. The images will be easier to use in the various encyclopedias. Best regard of France--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 08:57, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Useless redirects

Please remember to delete useless redirects. I just added moved to a descriptive name to File:DSC 2520.JPG and they get deleted quite quickly. This file is now at the good name File:Leslie Morse, dressage rider from the United States, with the Swedish Warmblood stallion "Tip Top", World Cup Final 2007.jpg. It is in the guidelines about deleting useless redirects after moving a file. I check the global usage to see if the redirect is in use before adding the speedy tag. Sometimes, if the redirect is only used on one or two language wikis, I replace it with the new name, so that the redirect can be safely deleted. Snowmanradio (talk) 10:38, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Innotata!
Tip: Add categories to your files

Non-US works

I am realizing that I need to have non-US PD tags on many files. For starters, can you help me with

--TonyTheTiger (talk) 06:22, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't think I'll be especially helpful. Compositions by Elgar are out of copyright, so I've updated Serenade for Strings. Farewell of Slavianka probably is copyright in Russia (that is, unless it falls into a small number of exceptions to 70 years after the death of the author); you need to find out about the arranger of Marche Slav (even for the U.S. copyright). I think the British Grenadiers is safely public domain due to its age (the modern version of the song is recorded ca 1800), and if it doesn't mention a particular arrangement it would sensible to assume so; I don't know about Arirang. —innotata 22:18, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello, this picture seems not to be by Neale... what do you think of Category:William Strutt ? William Strutt (1825-1915) Totodu74 (talk) 13:49, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Looks like it's signed "A W Strutt", so probably this man's son, who lived from 1856 to 1924. —innotata 14:38, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Well done, does he deserve his self category ? Totodu74 (talk) 19:49, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Why shouldn't he have his own. I'll create one. —innotata 22:33, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
What's the authorship information at File:Gallinago solitaria.jpg about? —innotata 22:34, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
« "Gallinago Solitaria" chromolithograph after A.W.Strutt(?), published in Hume & Marshall's The Game Birds of India, Burmah and Ceylon, about 1890. » On archive.org, I just found ducks (and allies) from this book (and unfortunately all of pictured species have already an illustration on Commons). Totodu74 (talk) 15:52, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
Do you have a list of all the possible artists? Why S. Hebert? For the Hume & Marshall, what's the "unfortunately" about? —innotata 18:53, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
No, I don't have the list (here you have some things, maybe to review), I think I put S. Herbert because he was the identified artist of the other Gallinago. For the "unfortunately", I meant that it's more useful to find illustrations for unpictured species on Commons. Totodu74 (talk) 11:27, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Ah. I don't really agree with the last piece; I usually import all the original illustrations from a book. There also are many more things that can be found than one illustration for each species: much better illustrations, illustrations of anatomy and ecological aspects, and so on, though of course it is valuable and I've found plenty of images for species without any (like Passer hemileucus and a few other sparrows). Currently, the main books I'm going through are Category:Birds of Great Britain and Ireland (Butler) (which we of course have illustrations and photos for every species) and Category:The Natural History of Sokotra and Abd-el-Kuri (quite the opposite); the next ones on my list (including some I'll scan myself) are going to contain mostly species with no or few images. —innotata 15:29, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
You're right, let's say that it takes quite a long time, so I try to concentrate my effort on those kind of ilustrations. :) Although I think I could undertake those ducks and geeses because they are easy to cut out (they have a background, unlike precedents images I have uploaded). I also spotted this 1838 book by Andrew Smith, but I ignore who the artist is. What do you think ? Totodu74 06:29, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Once you get that old, it's safely PD under 70 pma, but I have no idea. —innotata 14:18, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, for File:Gallinago solitaria.jpg I've found the second volume but not the drawing inside it. (And I also will upload thoseplates after vol. 1) Regards, Totodu74 (talk) 13:57, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for cleaning up the template after me. I knew there was some way to make it work, but I couldn't figure it out at the time. VernoWhitney (talk) 00:16, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

I didn't even look at the history, and wasn't very sure of whether my changes would work, but they do. All the current files from the site should be eligible for relicensing, since I've found none on the Wayback Machine that aren't already on here. —innotata 01:01, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
The reason I made the change is because the images are only eligible for relicensing if they were posted here before November 1, 2008. It was set up by a previous editor so that all images would be automatically marked as relicensed because the OTRS permission only covers older images, but the tag could still be used on a file uploaded today so long as it was on the source site long enough ago, but it would only be GFDL, not dual-licensed. Anyways, thanks again! VernoWhitney (talk) 01:50, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
Posted before 2008 here or on Wikipedia, like all I've looked at. I was looking for images on the site which would only GFDL, of course, but found none. —innotata 01:53, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

hidden project cat

Hi, I reverted your hidden category. Please dont hide the categories, they are not usable then. thanks, mike Mdupont (talk) 18:51, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Categories are supposed to topics, though I've now noticed it's not perfectly clear all non-topic/project categories are required to be hidden (Commons:Categories#Categories marked with "HIDDENCAT"), those of images from a project (like Category:Malayalam loves Wikimedia event - 2011 April¨). As COM:C points out, hidden categories aren't entirely unusable, especially to logged-in users. —innotata 18:01, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

I see that you were one of those lumbered with a number of my pictures that needed renaming. Sorry about that! I wanted them to be useful and the original names I gave were not conducive to that. I think I am beginning to crack the system and hope not to bother you again, not in that way anyway! Go well, JonRichfield (talk) 11:38, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't think it was necessary to rename them: the old names were good enough. However the rule is that uploaders can change files to any OK names, so as you requested it, I moved them (just a click of one button for each, actually, with the file-moving access). —innotata 12:10, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Retaining bot history

Hi, on File:Brant page 371.jpg you cut a bot template which removed a hidden category. For these templates could you stick to tweaking the template (or leaving it in) rather than deleting otherwise it becomes impossible to track these if any fixes are needed on the whole batch upload (as the hidden category is lost)? I have done this for this specific image as can be seen at diff. Thanks -- (talk) 23:58, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

The template looks like any other Flickrreview template in the permission field, and if it is important for the source it rather should have something else on it. Public domain images should not have flickrreview tags and CC licenses unless they are given as no restrictions on Flickr, so this does not sound reasonable to expect. —innotata 00:07, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Edits on wikipedia by an editor

The articles of Stephen Pound, Denis MacShane, Alan Milburn, Ian Collins (radio presenter), Ed Husain and John Reid, Baron Reid of Cardowan are all under attack by two editors who I believe to be the same person: 196.205.129.115 and 196.205.130.118. The editor in question is saying that they want to execute Muslims, the only good muslim is a dead muslim and that they attack Muslims. I was wondering could you revert all of his edits, as they are quite bad. Thanks Slytherining Around32 (talk) 17:32, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

I'm not interested in editing on your behalf, but I'll remove serious BLP violations (most have already been reverted). —innotata 18:07, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Sorry

Sorry about the recent issues with File:BrianBelo.jpg and File:BrianDowling.jpg. I made a mistake with my claims and have reverted the files back to their original condition. Apologies again for the kerfuffle. 188.220.151.140 21:42, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

File:Palatul Parlamentului.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

The images I have uploaded

I just wanted to thank you for fighting my corner with regard to the images that I have uploaded onto wikimedia and I seen how you added a few to their respective wikipedia pages. I was wondering, if you might consider adding the other images I have uploaded to their articles aswell, I completely understand if you wouldn't want to, but I thought that I could add the images to wikimedia and you add them to their articles (Only if they are licensed under the OGL of course haha), as I would be eternally grateful. Kind regards. Slytherining Around32 (talk) 16:31, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
