First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)

Permissions[edit]

Once again, read the text of the templates above. Here at Commons only clearly documented permissions are accepted. Just adding some text at the pictures does not proof anything. That's why we have the COM:OTRS-Team. They check your claims and if they believe you the pictues will get a ticket. This ticket than is proof of permission, not a text that anybody can add. This process sounds very subjective to me and goes against the one of the very things wikis provide, trust in good faith. Seems like a lot of red tape in what is supposed to be a "fast" way to spread information. To me, this process doesn't seem to be completely thought through because of the many ways media can be obtained and created within the web 2.0 world. In the case you site. I took the picture with her camera and upon which, uploaded it to my computer to edit her out for the usage on the wiki. I am definitely not a novice when it comes to wikis and will not tolerate one off notices with no explanation. In a wiki that I manage, I let the gardeners know that kid gloves and hand holding need to be provided when they cite guidelines. As such, these are just guidelines, as I am reading them. Not an absolution that one MUST adhere. The process of having to verify my work by sending an email seems to go against the in good faith that I am providing materials out of my own work and collection to accommodate the spreading of my tacit knowledge to the global repository. Thank goodness for the Wikimedia of Americas conference in Atlanta this year. This will probably be one of the things I will address, because it appears subjective and tyrannous. Of course these are just my opinions, as an evangelist of Enterprise 2.0 and the social web. As such, so is this "review process". Immunity 16:39, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That process may sound subjective to you but it is necessary because otherwise we would be liable. If you can't accept the few simple and most basic rules of this project, you are free to leave. And please once again read the case I cited because you mistook it with another picture, where you either have a wrong claim at the author-field or at the permission field. The one I have cited was the case where you took a picture from some anonymous fan and just decided for that person what licence it should be which actually violates his copyrights. Trust in good faith is good, but we don't trust people that far, that they are allowed to violate laws. We don't want to be sued because of you. -- Cecil 16:58, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No one will get sued over my photos, I assure you. It seems as though the community is fearing the worst. I'll go back and adhere to whatever, but the same fan took both pictures that we are discussing. I know this fan and the emails I have are through myspace where I keep contact with her. You can't forward myspace emails out of their internal system. As I said, either these came from my personal collection or I took these pictures with my own hand. How am I not the author if I took the picture and modified them on MY computer? Just wondering. I understand there is semantics on the other where the picture was taken and sent to me for official use, but just wondering why on the ones I take, edit, and upload, how I am supposed to prove myself. My word should be trusted. Just as my edits are trusted in good faith when I site them. If at the time I originally uploaded them I had the exif info, I would have provided it. Now I wonder if I can go back and extract that. That should be proof enough. My comments on your talk page where about your actions as an administrator. Is it not unethical to remove the comments from talk pages? If I wish to comment on your talk page about your role as an administrator, do I not have the right to do so on your talk page so others in the community can see there is a discussion on the matter? If this discussion was being discussed between two other random users, wouldn't you think there was something unethical in the wiki ethos about the removing of a discussion on a talk page. The rules on my talk page are quite clear. Disrupting discussions by spreading them over several talk pages is considered rather unpolite by many people here. And actually I have to tell you that you write a lot and say hardly anything at all. It would be nice if you stick with facts and not accuse people of problematic ethos or things like that.
