First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki – it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal [1]Ignacio_Icke Gallery]
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: File:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

¡Hola, Ignacio Icke!
Consejo: Añade categorías a tus fotos.
Consejo: Añade categorías a tus fotos.

Gracias.

Thanks for uploading File:Tiananmen Square protests.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-self to release it under the GFDL or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the [2]Ignacio_Icke Gallery] tool. Thank you. Please do more research next time.[edit]

The notice you added to File:Rodrigo de Rato y Figaredo.jpg is incorrect. The text and photographs on the site are under separate licenses. As the link you provided notes, the copyright on the text of the site is copyrighted. However, if you look at the Image gallery itself, it begins with a large notice stating: "These photographs are in the public domain. They are free to use for publication purposes." Escudo de Jaén[edit]

Hola. Johnbojaen 03:40, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very impressive work -- hope you will contribute more! :-) --Eloquence 06:03, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree :) Regarding to the problems with the circled numbers: As I already wrote on COM:FPC, the problem probably occurs because you use a different font and size when drawing this on your computer than the mediawiki software when rendering. This problem could be solved by converting the text to path (Inkscape: “Path” -> “Object to Path”). If you don't want to do this, you could to also try to align the text centered instead of left. That may work, too. --norro 12:53, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: things worth illustrating, you may find some inspiration on w:Wikipedia:Requested pictures. If you have a knack for electronics, I think there’s plenty of devices that could use a good "how this works on the inside" illustration.--Eloquence 03:01, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ajax[edit]

--Dodo 22:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Duchamp Fountaine.jpg[edit]

Hello. I reverted your placing a copyright violation notice on File:Duchamp Fountaine.jpg. The photo is from a USA publication from 1917, and as far as I can determine is correctly labled "PD-US". Duchamp’s work may still be under copyright, but this photo seems to be PD-US. If you think it should be deleted as a copyright problem, I think it needs to be listed for discussion (conflicting juristictions?) rather than qualifying as a speedy delete. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 02:19, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Neutral countries.svg[edit]

Hi Chabacano

Regarding your map of neutral countries, you might wish to include Denmark and Norway as former neutral countries. The union between these two countries tried to remain neutrality from 1721 till it was disestablished in 1814, and the two countries did the same until World War II. In the Danish case, this policy was not always successful, but the policy of neutrality was a consistent characteristic of how Denmark perceived itself towards other nations. In both cases, this development ended in 1949. Regards. Valentinian (talk) 22:20, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Finnish Civil War maps[edit]

Hello, thanks again for the maps. However, the light green colour was a bit irritating, and I changed it to more logical blue (conservatives). See File:FinnishCivilWarMapBegin.svg. I think it looks better, but I can't change the two other maps as I don't understand the system there. When I download the image, I get it in full size but in Wiki it should only be Southern part.

So, could you please change the green colour in the the smaller maps to blue (3b7ed9ff) or some other better colour if you know one. Thanks! --Pudeo 11:56, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great. I am just learning how to make SVGs, and extracted one from a PDF. File:Pois pakkoruotsi.svg. However, the quality is not very nice (just try to zoom it to 1000 px). Is it possible for you to re-create it it in best quality without jpg-flaws? A transparent area next to the logo would also be good. It’s only possible to fix it by redrawing the shapes? I hope that doesn't take too long. A bigger resolution jpg exists here too: PoisPakkoruotsi. Sorry for asking something for the third time already.. :) --Pudeo 19:37, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah thanks again ;). It looks very fine, but as you commented about the font, isn't it just normal Arial Black? But yeah, it’s already fine, although some letters are perhaps too close to each other in that font. I would try out myself Arial Black + modifications, but I can't get the letters rotated properly.. --Pudeo 11:22, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the font is even better: PoisPakkoruotsi.jpg --Pudeo 15:25, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning File:Algerian civil war.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello Chabacano,

I noticed some of your amazing work a few months ago, and I really wanted to ask if you would be interested in doing something similar for the Australian COA here. I noticed you said you were a little tired of working on them when someone asked about the Wales COA, so I thought I'd leave it for a while, but now I'm back, I can't help but ask this time. If you ever have some time, I'd be very grateful and I'm sure countless other readers will be too. Cheers, Ben.

Hola Chabacano,

Hello Ignacio Icke!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this [9]Ignacio_Icke gallery].

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 05:45, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I tagged this image because I noticed it does not have a valid license:

File:Pedophile-butterfly.svg

It claimed a GFDL license, but the linked page does not exist, so the license can't be verified. I'm notifying you because the image page lists you as having vectorized it, so I thought you might know here to find the correct license.

Hello Chabacano! Your image of the Royal coat of arms of Scotland is superb; thank you for the hours you spent creating it. However, one minor but important detail is incorrect:

Your version of the arms of the Kingdom of Scotland, in use until the Union of the Crowns in 1603, includes the Latin motto of the The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle; ' Nemo me impune lacessit, on a blue scroll.

The motto Nemo me impune lacessit was not added to the arms of the Kingdom of Scotland until the reign of King Charles II, (1649–1651 / 1660–1685), by which time the arms had become that version which combines the arms of the Kingdom of Scotland with those of the Kingdom of England. (Similar to those arms of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom as can be seen on your own File:Scottish royal coat of arms.svg). The motto Nemo me impune lacessit did not appear on the arms shown in your image File:Kingdom of scotland royal arms.svg, the only motto on this version of the arms being IN DEFENS.

Reference:

  • Public Sculpture of Glasgow
  • By Raymond McKenzie, Gary Nisbet, National Recording Project (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association)
  • Edition: illustrated
  • Published by Liverpool University Press, 2001
  • 538 pages
  • (page 462 google books)
    • "Below the shield is the additional motto: NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT (trans: 'No-one provokes me with impunity'). This was incorporated into the arms by Charles II and is associated with the

Order of the Thistle' "

Therefore, the image File:Kingdom of scotland royal arms.svg would be more accurate if the blue scroll with motto Nemo me impune lacessit is removed, as per my own version of your image at my Wikipedia Sandbox. ("image will be deleted after Friday, 24 April 2009").

Thanks for uploading File:Genealogia principe carlos.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
