Tree identity

[edit]

Hi Hladac - thanks for adding your photos to Wiki Commons! Unfortunately, your photos File:(ms) Pinus wallichiana 1.jpg, File:(ms) Pinus wallichiana 8.jpg, File:(ms) Pinus wallichiana 9.jpg (and the rest in the set, if they are all the same tree), are identifiable from the cones as the hybrid Pinus × schwerinii (Pinus wallichiana × Pinus strobus) and not Pinus wallichiana. You might want to replace them at Borovica himalájska with other photos from Category:Pinus wallichiana (there are plenty to chose from!).

As an aside, it would be very helpful if you could add some information to your photos saying where they are taken, it helps with adding extra categories (such as Category:Flora of Slovakia or its subcategories, if they are in Slovakia), and also whether they are natural, or cultivated, plants.

Thanks! (and apologies for being unable to write in Slovak!) - MPF (talk) 15:23, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MPF, I'm not very happy about that but I have to respect it. I'm going to swap images and I will try to remove mistaken files. Thanks! Hladac (talk) 17:27, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Don't worry about it :-) this is quite a common error, particularly in the colder parts of central and eastern Europe (and also the northeastern USA), where true P. wallichiana is not hardy, but the much hardier P. × schwerinii grows successfully, often planted under the misapprehension that it is P. wallichiana. The hybrid inherits its cold tolerance from P. strobus, of course. - MPF (talk) 21:22, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, and thanks for additional information.
I have requested to rename all my 9 mistaken files and I hope they will be moved to new category, too. Some of my uploaded images of exotic trees and shrubs come from an abandoned arboretum in eastern Slovakia. Is here (in Commons) any possibility (if I’m unsure) to help identify species before publishing?
Thanks? Hladac (talk) 05:45, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hladac - sorry, there isn't any easy way of establishing identification before publication here. But I'll always be happy to check anything you want looked up, just add a request on my talk page. Once checked, any changes can always be done afterward, that's the good thing about the wiki system :-) - MPF (talk) 20:12, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
