First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello Henry, I noticed you uploaded this image. There's a couple of problems with the licensing.

For a start, did you take the photo? I don't think so since you listed a webpage as the source. So you can't use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}}. You can only use "self" licenses for self-created works. Also, you can't "choose" a license unless you are the copyright holder. So unless the photographer said "yes, I license that under CreativeCommons Attribution Sharealike license", you can't put CC-BY-SA.

Secondly permission to use an image on Wikipedia, for example, is not strong enough permission to upload to the Commons. See Commons:Licensing for a list of what is acceptable. To get "strong enough" permission please use Commons:Email templates.

If stronger permission is not gained for this image, it will have to be deleted. If you have any questions, you can ask on my talk page or the Commons:Help desk. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy with the way I have posted it, in response to a request. So is she. If you are unhappy, then destroy useful content - I don't really care. --Henrygb 23:14, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Henrygb. Please don't get pfctdayelise wrong. She wants to keep that image as well (and we all admins aren't happy deleting images) and in order to be able to keep it there are some minimum requirements at Wikimedia Commons as for example our licensing policy which you can read entirely at Commons:Licensing (for a start Commons:First steps sums up everything important you need to care about in our project). So thatfor she noted some mistakes common to people that are new to Wikimedia Commons and asked you to correct it so that there are no further questions in future. This is also in order to protect you from people that potentially want to sue you because of copyright infringements (and we had these cases already and they were threatening us even revealing the log files and identity of these uploaders, so there's a good reason being carefully). So please forward a written email permission (standard permission text see above) of the copyright owner of the image to permissions@wikimedia.org (or try to proof that you're indeed the very same photographer of the image at the MP website). As it is now the image sadly needs to be deleted because of serious concerns of correctness of the given information. So please try to be a little bit cooperative like us and I am sure you'll enjoy our project and just in case you did make a failure please just say it now and we won't make a big drama out of it. It is my opinion that the way the image tagging and deletion project has gone is institutional vandalism and I have done since it started (e.g. en:User_talk:Henrygb#The_Humungous_Image_Tagging_Project). If the consensus thinks that it serves a higher purpose then that is an error by the consensus. --Henrygb 14:10, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
