First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Hello Hamish, you marked my file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mystykal_Kut.png for speedy deletion, i uploaded this file for a wiki page i'm creating (it's the France champion DJ). Hello, Hamish. What is happening with this file? Did you revert the moving of the file because the OTRS-"stamp" is not yet in place? If so, it is OK with me. The copyright clearance mail has been forwarded to permissions-no, so hopefully it will not take long. If there is another reason: Please inform me. A strange thing: By reverting your edit, the file that now comes up, is the one I uploaded first (with the info on José Carrera), not the current version. Can you change that? (Yes, I have cleared the cache). Another thing: Is the File:The story of the Ugelstad beads.jpg now on your watchlist, or will I have to inform you when the OTRS permission is OK? @Kjersti Lie: Yes, since OTRS has not confirmed your permission, there is a copyright issue and I cannot move it. As above, I declined your request and please file another request to do the renaming. Can you change that?» If so: When you look at the Wikimedia Commons file now you will see that I uploaded a new version of the timeline this morning, without the (not confirmed) information on José Carrera. "Asian drongo"[edit]

I requested to rename both these files of Fork-tailed Drongo-cuckoo (Surniculus dicruroides):

because the common name "Asian Drongo-cuckoo" is misleading, being usually used also for another species, the Square-tailed drongo-cuckoo (Surniculus lugubris) (criterion 3) Could you explain me why you considered the request not compling with renaming guidelines? --Esculapio (talk) 17:11, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Esculapio: The description in File:Asian_Drongo_Cuckoo.jpg says it is also known the Asian Drongo-cuckoo, and you also says it is its nickname, thus it is identified correctly, just like some people are given the same first name and we call them that, but they are actually different from each other, --Hamish (talk) 04:28, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The common name "Asian dongo" is ambiguous as it could refer to 2 different species; the ambiguity of the name involve that, for example, the two above mentioned files, both referring to Surniculus dicruroides, were used in wikidata page referring to Surniculus lugubris. I invite you to reconsider the request of renaming (criterion 2 - change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image particularly displays). --Esculapio (talk) 06:49, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
