First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

ファイル名の言語について[edit]

こんにちは、はじめまして。このたび、Hahifuheho さんが書かれたこの内容をたまたま拝見しましたので、お知らせに上がりました。これによれば、Hahifuheho さんは「ファイル名には英語を使うべし」とのご意見のようですが、コモンズの方針では、ファイル名は英語・日本語を含めいかなる言語で付けてもよいということになっています。Hahifuheho さんと同じお考えの方も一定数いらっしゃることとは思いますが、コモンズは（共通言語は英語ではありますが）多言語が併存するコミュニティですから、英語以外のファイル名がいけないということは特にありません。原則的に英語に統一しなくてはならないのはカテゴリ名のほうで、これはコモンズが利用しているシステムである MediaWiki の制約によるものです。今後のご参考にしていただきたく思います。

ところで、Hahifuheho さんは最近、小田急電鉄関連のカテゴリ名を「Odakyū」から「Odakyu」に変更する作業を多くなさっておいでですが、カテゴリ名を変更（移動）する場合は、原則としてあらかじめ改名提案を出し、2 週間待って異論がないことを確認した上で作業することが推奨されていますので、あわせてご理解いただければ幸いです。詳しくは Commons:Rename a category をごらんください。よろしくお願いします。Yasu (talk) 16:12, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

書き忘れていましたが、カテゴリの改名提案には 2 種類のやり方がありまして、2 週間のうちに異論が出なければ改名できるというのは {{Move}} タグをカテゴリページに貼り付けて告知する方法のほうです。今回のように独自の議論ページを作成しての改名提案の場合、たとえ 2 週間経過して反対意見がなくてもそれだけでは改名作業はできず、他の利用者（カテゴリの仕組みに慣れ議論に精通している利用者）によって議論がクローズされるのを待つ必要がありますので、ご注意ください。独自の議論ページを立ち上げるのは、複数のカテゴリに影響したり、意見が分かれることが予想されるなどの複雑な案件の場合に用いられる方法であって、通常の改名提案であれば {{Move}} による方法で構いません。ご了解のほどお願いします。Yasu (talk) 15:18, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr での日付について[edit]

はじめまして、Hahifuhehoさん。Flickr でアップロードされた画像の日付について申し上げます。special:diff/417330774 で taken on, location=Japan に変更されていましたが誤っています。該当ファイルは私が修正しました。このファイルには 原典 Flickr: Kyoto_20101020_Pro400H-Roll-15_24 とあります。2010年10月20日に京都で撮影されています。Flickr からのアップロード画像を修正するときには Flickr のオリジナル画像で撮影日などがタイトルとして書き込まれていることもありますので、確認されますようお願いします。--Krorokeroro (talk) 17:56, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
