First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Map[edit]

Hi. Thanks for bringing my attention to that map. I do remember participating in a debate about its deletion a while back.

Since then I have come to understand Wikipedia Commons better. As I see it, Commons is supposed to be a neutral repository of media files, with the discussion and arguments about what those files contain reduced to an absolute minimum. I find this is a reasonable model. It produces a stress free environment appropriate for content creation. Nasty arguments about deletion of files (like those about deletion of articles on Wikipedia) are largely avoided, which is a good thing.

So, instead of deletion, I would suggest finding a way to make clear that there are problems with this map, so that Wikipedia users are aware of them and hopefully consider removing the map from their articles. balcer (talk) 15:02, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here are, I think, the most relevant parts of COM:NPOV regarding this situation. Let's try and argue on this basis. I've emphasized some phrases that show, in my opinion, why this file should be kept. I'd like to get an answer from you where you specifically address these points, or bring up some policy that would support deletion.

It is not the role of Commons to adjudicate on subject-matter disputes nor to force local projects to use one version of a file in preference to another. [...] Images having particular national, political or religious significance including flags, emblems and maps can arouse strong passions, but Commons is not the place to decide which of various competing versions is the correct or official version. [...] Examples of subject matter disputes that are not appropriate here include:

  • Maps: “The author is trying to push a nationalistic/political/religious point of view by showing the national boundary in the wrong place", "the towns have been labelled with a non-approved name or in wrong language", "the map shows a state that has no legal recognition”.

[...] Such subject-matter disputes remain inappropriate even when they are expressed (as they normally are) in absolute terms: “that flag does not exist”; “that boundary is wrong”; “that country does not exist”. [...] As stated above, files that are in use in another Wikimedia project are in any event considered in scope and are not liable to deletion on the grounds that they are "wrong" in some way. Languages of Central Europe 1910[edit]

Hi, I like the map, though it is inaccurate in some places.

  • The East Frisian language island should be moved west by at least 100km (it is not too far from the Dutch border).
  • Graubuenden/Grisons should show the Rhetoromance speaking areas (German is overrepresented here)
  • Speakers of Polish are overrepresented in Upper Silesia and Masuria. The 1910 census shows widespread use of both languages throughout the area that is coloured green in your map
  • Lithuanian was still widely used in the northeastern part (Memelland) of East Prussia.
  • There seem to be two Dutch-speaking areas in West Germany, which is not correct.

Hi, I've adjusted the map; East Frisian has changed, as has been the Swiss romance dialects and Lithuanian. I've also adjusted Polish in Northern Poland. The Dutch spoken in Western Germany is correct though; the area around Cleves, Kevelaer and Wachtendonk was Dutch speaking. Its traditional (though rarely spoken in its pure form nowadays) dialect is Dutch. Though it might be better to stripe this area as with polish... as it wasn't 100% Dutch around 1900. I'm planning on redrawing the map; as it's not exactly what I wanted in terms of lay out, and because each time it's edited it gets uglier ... so please tell me if these corrections suffice before I do that.HP1740-B (talk) 14:53, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have sources that Dutch was *spoken* by more than 50% in the areas you showed as "Dutch" in Germany (and Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe and Groningen)? Removing other users' comments[edit]

These edits [1] [2] [3] [4] are unacceptable. If you had a problem with the position of the comment, you can say so on the page, or at most move it yourself, but under no circumstance (except obvious vandalism) you are to remove other people's comments.
