Carrier identity: Kaga vs Akagi (or another?)[edit]

Hi there, Soica2001! I am an English speaker and am trying to generate a translation for you to understand me. I have found a photo that was in the scrap book of an American aviator, Commander William Balden, who was a pilot in an air group assigned to the USS Enterprise in 1944. While he was in the Marianas he came ashore and found a couple of photos that had been in the possesion of the Japanese navy. He placed the photos in his scrap book, which eventually was donated to our national archives. One of the photos is very similar to a photo you uploaded two years ago. The photo Balden had shows a wider frame shot, and it is the reverse image of your photo. Looking at the photo, it shows an A6M Zero fighter taking off of the deck of a carrier, and I believe the carrier is the Kaga. If you could take a look at them I would like to know what you think. I believe the two photos are from the same negative, though the prints we are looking at were found in far different locations. I have included a photo of the Akagi on the same day for comparison. Thanks for your consideration.Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 19:41, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User:Gunbirddriver2|Gunbirddriver2]] (talk) 20:17, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry reply late. This image was a reprint from certain Internet. Source was also written on the Internet page. Source was also written on the Internet page. Well, thank you for the reply, Soica2001. In this case, we decided the aircraft carrier Soryu was most likely. I appreciate it. Cheers! Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 01:17, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 01:02, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

It's a cropped version of a Bundesarchive file. Some people want all the information in the image retained in the original, so I download them, recut and then upload them back up. It takes a minute for me to copy and paste the licensing data from the original image over onto the newly loaded image. It's all taken care of now. This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Battle of Kursk.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

The box above doesn't really fit to my intention. What I mean is: What was the source file? I can't find it. Hasenläufer (talk) 07:33, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Guten tag, Hasenläufer. The source for the image was the Vietnamese Wikipedia Commons. I noted that there was a warning on the Vietnamese file stating that proper sources were not provided for the image. It is dated some five years ago and no action has been taken thus far. Nevertheless, I have not used the image. I am certain it is a Bundesarchive image, but have not been able to locate proper original sourcing. It probably should be removed. Here is the address to the Vietnamese page: http://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%E1%BA%ADp_tin:Battle_of_Kursk.jpg

Please add links to source files[edit]

Dear Gunbirddriver2, in the case you upload derivative works like cropped images, please add a link to the source file in the field "other versions" of the file description. Here is a sample how to mark the source file as "Extracted from". Here is the template description.

  • Example: |other versions = {{Extracted from|Bundesarchiv Bild 101I-300-1863-21, Riva-Bella, Vorführung Panzerwerfer, Generäle.jpg}}

In addition it's a good idea to include links to the cropped file(s) in the description of the source file, again in the field "other versions". Here is a sample how to mark a cropped file as "Image extracted". Here is the template description. Multiple files can be added, separated by the charater "|".

Cheers, Hasenläufer (talk) 08:04, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for those tips. I have made quite a few extractions, so I have a bit of work to do to provide their originating image. By the way, I am confident the extracted image cited above, Bundesarchiv Bild 101I-300-1863-21, Riva-Bella, Vorführung Panzerwerfer, Generäle.jpg is not of Edgar Feuchtinger. The face does not seem right, and more significantly, for a formal review with a Field Marshall the uniform lacks all of Feuchtinger's decorations. These he surely would have worn if it were actually Feuchtinger, as everyone else there is in his dress uniform, and we see Feuchtinger wearing his appropriate markings in other images where his unit is being reviewed by Rommel. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 21:26, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Other file with missing source[edit]

Again, I do not have a proper source for this image. I am confident it is in the Bundesarchive somewhere, but could not find it with my efforts at searches there. It should be removed.Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 05:56, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The image is cropped from another wikipedia commons image (thus the "2" in the file name), but I can no longer locate that image. I was able to find a coarse version of the same image, and though the file here was from the Conseil général de Normandie, the original photographic image was apparently taken by the British military. I believe I have it corrected now. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 18:23, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Sgt. Michael Strenk.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. New images to modify[edit]

A question about a photo description you made[edit]

Hello - I noticed that in the photo for < https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_101III-Merz-023-22,_Russland,_nach_%27Unternehmen_Zitadelle%27.jpg >, you changed the unit name from Das Reichs to Grossdeutschland. I've already changed it back, but if there is some reason why I shouldn't have, I'd like to know. (Obvious things are not always obvious for me...) Thanks. __209.179.9.46 03:52, 19 April 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gunbirddriver2 (talk • contribs) 03:51, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

200 Panther tanks were brought up in time for the Battle of Kursk, and all 200 were assigned to the Grossdeutschland division to give it extra punch. Das Reich was supplemented with a Tiger heavy tank battalion, but no Panthers. See the third paragraph here. Sometimes the German archive people who title the images are not correct on what the image is depicting. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 03:51, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. What about the SS collar insignia? __209.179.9.46 04:26, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good pick up. That's one of those things that make you go "Hmmm." Definitely an SS officer in command of the tank platoon. What does this mean?
I cannot tell you, but my next step would be to go to the Bundesarchive and find the image, then click on the photographer's name and pull up all his images, then try to see the series of images he took before and after the image in question to see if any clues pop up as to what we are really looking at. I have already done that in this case and it was not of much help. The images before and after are not close numerically to the image in question, which means they have neglected to put in the archive the images that were taken near in time to this one. What is there allowing for the gaps still puts us in the Soviet Union in summer and equipment and officers depicted place us near the time of Operation Citadel, but not enough information is near by to really nail it down if it is before or after. Not for me tonight anyway. Still, it is important to note that what you see and what you know is often more helpful to figuring it out than what someone wrote down on the ID line while attempting to identify thousands of images. Vehicle types are incorrect, not infrequently, and the month and year stamp are often quite far from correct. Other things can be wrong too, as appears to be the case here. Hope that helps. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 03:47, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As I think about this more, the error is most likely where the unit is and what it is doing rather than what division it is part of. Errors in time are common in these descriptions. We have to remember it is a posed shot taken for promotional purposes. In early July there was a big rush trying to get the Panthers into action for Citadel, and they went from the train transport almost directly into action, and the action they were engaged in was very hot. No opportunity for an image like the one depicted. According to William Fey in Armour Battles of the Waffen SS, page 346 states the Das Reich division first used Panthers in action on August 22nd outside Karkov.
https://books.google.com/books?id=HjG3hOaklNMC&pg=PA346&lpg=PA346&dq=%22Das+Reich%22%2B%22Panther%22&source=bl&ots=gklG4G3446&sig=zzSEKiuaKbETRhk_4y0dXetPnaw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjOirKGls_TAhUQ5mMKHRmqCZc4ChDoAQg5MAM#v=onepage&q=%22Das%20Reich%22%2B%22Panther%22&f=false
My guess is the image is of Das Reich and it is taken in August 1943 and not July, and is not an image of Citadel at all. But of course we cannot say this with certainty. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 17:19, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(I had already written a longer response but my browser inexplicably crashed on me and I don't feel like rewriting everything I had already written). I guess we'll never know the real answer. It's sometimes amazing how wrong the Bundesarchive gets things. Over the years they've made some amazing mistakes, e.g., not even being able to get people's names correct. Thanks for being willing to discuss this - it's something that's becoming very rare on Wikipedia these days. C'est la vie. __209.179.34.107 17:24, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Any time. It's the archive titles and the dates that are most often wrong. In this case the inventory information "Bild 101 III - Propagandakompanien der Wehrmacht - Waffen-SS" is correct. I believe that is from the original photographer or the officer from the propaganda department he was working with. But the archive title below says: "Sowjetunion.- Waffen-SS-Division "Das Reich" nach "Unternehmen Zitadelle" which cannot be correct. I think that statement is added by the archivist who made the images available to the general public many years after the fact. It's a fun bit of sleuthing. Anyway, thanks for the interest. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Caulton and Jabs 1972.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:Beamish.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Response given on the deletion discussion page. I do not wish to make use of images that are not legally available to use, nor would I want wikipedia to be in copyright violation. These all appeared to be okay to me. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 01:20, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Hans von Luck.5.jpg was recently deleted[edit]

File:Hans von Luck.5.jpg was recently deleted by Sanandros for reasons below. If you disagree with the deletion, you need to file an undeletion request.

Reason for deletion: Commons:Deletion requests/Uploads by Gunbirddriver2: This image is licensed with {{PD-BW}}. This is not possible because the Zentrale Dienstvorschrift is a system of rules for the German "Bundeswehr", who was founded in 1955. Therefore it is not possible that the "Zentrale Dienstvorschrift" contains images from the 2nd World War.

Thanks for uploading File:10,5 cm leFH Geschützwagen H (f).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page.

You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page.

Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Gneisenau-and-Scharnhorst-channel.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

User who nominated the file for deletion (Nominator) : Rosenzweig.

I'm a computer program; please don't ask me questions but ask the user who nominated your file(s) for deletion or at our Help Desk. //Deletion Notification Bot (talk) 23:07, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:10.5cm leFH 16 Geschützwagen auf Vickers Mk VI.2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Becker, Rommel and Feuchtinger.2.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: This is an extract of File:Becker, Rommel and Feuchtinger.jpg, which was explicitely deleted as a copyright violation and an upload not authorized by the Bundesarchiv.
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
