Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Categories[edit]

Hi there mate, I see that you are currently removing categories from some of my recent Flickr uploads. Of course, they should be removed, but I am doing mass cleanup of these uploads, and moving them to proper categories in bulk. Just letting you know, in case you want to take a break from that. Cheers, russavia (talk) 12:50, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for the heads-up. It's not that I was "removing" them as such; but moving any of the more obvious ones that should possibly be better located in subcats. I will take a break and you can let me know when you're done and if you need any final help with clean-up. Guliolopez (talk) 12:55, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries mate. If you look at Special:Contributions/Russavia I am cleaning the Cobh images up in bulk -- takes 2 minutes with VisualFileChange, which is now my favourite tool on the project :) russavia (talk) 12:59, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just in case my contribs don't make sense when you look, this is probably a better way of showing those Cobh images, as an example. russavia (talk) 13:07, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. The recategorisation (and relabelling) of the Cobh images looks good. Great job. I must investigate the VisualFileChange script. (I started using HotCat to more discretely categorise the new content added to the parent Ireland cat. But I quickly spotted how many new files had been added, and moved to cat-a-lot instead. I have used CommonsCommander in the past, but don't find it reliable for bulk changes). I was going to start moving some content to Category:Cork City Gaol, but will hold pending your exercise (and will take a look at VisualFileChange in the meantime). Guliolopez (talk) 13:34, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi mate, I am still cleaning up uploads (it's a labour of love lol), and I came across some "Camden Quay" photos. I have placed them also into Category:Camden Quay. Are you familiar with Cork? If so, perhaps you might be able to suggest categories that this can be placed under? Aside from simply Category:Cork that is :) russavia (talk) 04:51, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thanks for the heads-up. I made a few category/hierarchy tweaks. I think that should be sorted now. Cheers. Guliolopez (talk) 09:03, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 01:29, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Understood. Thanks! Guliolopez (talk) 01:34, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:Zeshan Mahmmod[edit]

Hi. I have mass deleted all of this users uploads as a precaution. Thank you for your hard work. Green Giant (talk) 02:11, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the followup. Thanks! Guliolopez (talk) 10:26, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Guliolopez, what is the point of Category:Images from the National Library of Ireland (check needed)? Am I right in assuming that this category is for cases where depicted objects need to be identified and the file to be categorized? I did this as I recognize the 17th-century Brooke fireplace but you added this category back again. Hence, I am wondering. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 19:03, 12 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Likewise, this cleanup by me and this edit by you. --AFBorchert (talk) 19:06, 12 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hiya AFBorchert. Thanks for your note and highlighting any (acknowledged) "odd" edits I've made. In short, on the points you raise:
  • "Added/removed/readded?" - Apologies. I hadn't spotted your intervening edits and categorisation efforts. I will pay more attention in future.
  • "Why?" - A high percentage of the images in (or attributed to) the National Library of Ireland collections were uploaded by a particular user (since blocked for inappropriate uploads and laundering behaviours) to the extent that I created a "(check needed)" subcategory. To aid in identifying and reviewing images that might be suspect. It was also highlighted to me on my EN Talkpage that other image licences may need review. Hence an extra focus on those images.
  • "So what's it actually for?" - A good and reasonable question. In honesty I'd first created that sub-cat for the above reasons - to verify that the image was indeed released by the NLI to a Commons-appropriate licence. However that purpose has since (I have to admit) expanded - to an additional "check" that the image is appropriately categorised or sub-categorised. Rightly or wrongly (perhaps the latter, upon reflection) I started adding the "(check needed)" category to NLI images which were not attributed to a specific sub-cat by collection. As, if it could be attributed to a confirmed "PD" or "PD-Old" collection, then it was almost certainly appropriate for the project. And, as I have not yet created a sub-category for the NLI's "Hargreave" collection, I dropped it in there - pending the creation of that collection-specific sub-cat.
I realise now that, as this logic is "all in my head", and as my use of Hot-Cat and Cat-a-Lot tools meant that edit-summaries have been thin-on-the-ground (to the extent that nobody could see what as "in my head"), that this wasn't at all clear. And a question like yours was inevitable. Apologies. I will have another think about what that cat should be for, will add a note to that cat (or its talk page), will try and make better use of edit summaries, and will try and pay more attention to other's efforts in the edit history. Thanks! Guliolopez (talk) 16:39, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Churches and monasteries in County Cork[edit]

I think that you misunderstand my purpose in creating the various re-directs. It was not to put Catholic churches into Protestant categories or vice versa. I created the Catholic and Protestant targets after all. It did not occur to me that people would still search by the now redundant category in order to categorise new churches. Laurel Lodged (talk) 16:20, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Laurel Lodged. I understand the original intent. You may not be aware however that it is not just a question of people "searching" for the original category. By leaving a redirect from Category:Churches and monasteries in County Cork to Category:Protestant church buildings in County Cork (as per the original configuration and this unusual revert), anyone using one of the varied categorisation tools would quite easily have added a church to Category:Churches and monasteries in County Cork. And found it automatically (and unbeknown to them) automatically moved to the category for Protestant churches. As happened on more than a few occasions. Which is why the other editor moved it originally. And why I moved it again. Ideally category redirects would go to the most appropriate macro category. Rather than a less appropriate sub-category. For this reason. Guliolopez (talk) 18:41, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point. Thanks. Laurel Lodged (talk) 15:18, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
File:Gala, Drumshanbo (geograph 3696233).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for your note. I completely disagree with your interpretation and application of COM:FOP, COM:TOO Ireland and COM:DM Ireland in this nomination. And have responded as much in the thread. Guliolopez (talk) 10:44, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Images from the National Library of Ireland Fergus O’Connor Collection has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
