First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. The source info simply points to http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/wuu/e/ec/Mariana_Bridi_Da_Costa.jpg, which is a raw image file on a Wikimedia server, without description or sourcing information. You should have looked at the actual source, we always have to make sure a file has actually been released by the original copyright holder under the GFDL. I cannot read the language either, but the page contains a link to the original Flickr upload, where it says it plain English "All rights reserved". Not yet. A few minutes ago I was looking in the German Wikipedia article and found this: [1]. I suppose the guy who made the chart tooks the data from here: [2]. I'm thinking about updating the old chart or making a new chart with the WHO-figures in english. No, the function for the scale in y-axis is:
  • f(x) = 2x
with x: cases
According to my formulary ax = ex * ln a, so the link to the base e is:
  • 2x = ex * ln 2
You can see it in the y-axis: 4, 8, 16, 32, ...
If the curve in the chart is a straight line, it shows exponential development. In fact, the growth in the first days seemed to be exponential, yes. But this was also caused by a delay in the laboratory tests and other factors and is slowing down now. The reported cases of the WHO must not necessarily fit to the real spread speed. The logarithmic chart just shows the numbers in the first days more clearly.
If there would be a daily doubling in cases the whole world population would already have been infected: It needs only 32d & 15h. So don't worry ;-) -- Grochim (talk) 05:10, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
