First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

Texas Toll highway markers[edit]

We already had the blue-blackground version available as File:Toll Texas 550 alternate.svg. You should not have replaced File:Toll Texas 550.svg. Any others that you replaced should be reverted and the alternate version uploaded at the other filename. The templates on Wikipedia can then be updated to call the alternates instead of the originals as needed, but the originals should remain since they are still useful. For instance, they can be displayed in the History section of the appropriate article to show how the markers used to appear until the change in 2011. I understand where you're coming from. I think the most current version should use the generic filename and older versions should exist under a different name (cf: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/Old_Texas_6.svg). As far as 1, 45, 99 and 130 go, I have never seen the blue-on-white version in use on the highway. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 21:19, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but consider it this way :File: Toll Texas {route}.svg is the series of markers with blue on white and :File:Toll Texas {route} alternate.svg is the series for white on blue. Even if TxDOT switched, we should not rename the files for stability reasons; Wikipedia isn't the only website that uses the repository of media files hosted at Commons, and if we flipped the naming scheme, we will cause unintended results on different websites. Imzadi 1979  21:23, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about :File: Toll Texas {route} new.svg instead of "alternate"? The white-on-blue shields aren't really alternate shields, they are new designs. I'll be happy to upload the white-on-blue shields to the new names. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 21:35, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm looking through the archives to see how the new SC shields were handled name-wise. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 21:39, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively see: this discussion. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 21:42, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The SC markers were uploaded under a different naming scheme, and as for the Warren County situation, we were dealing with other situations. I can go for the "new" instead of "alternate" modifier, but I don't think policy really supports replacing the "old" markers unless there's an actual error in them, and since the design was changed, that's not an error. We will have a similar situation when the day comes to replace all of the the Louisiana state highway markers since LaDOTD is in the long-term process of replacing the green and white markers with black and white versions on an as-needed basis. (For now, we're leaving the markers untouched, but once we have some evidence that the majority of the state has been switched in several years, then we'll switch the articles over.) At that point, the new graphics will be uploaded under a new naming scheme so that the old files can be preserved. Imzadi 1979  22:06, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to revert my changes, and Commons is acting up, not showing the reverted graphic but instead showing a placeholder. Can you help? -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 22:09, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This would be for File:Toll Texas 1.svg, File:Toll Texas 121.svg, File:Toll Texas 45.svg, File:Toll Texas 49.svg, and File:Toll Texas 130.svg. The others are successfully back to the old versions. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 22:15, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am about to head home for the evening; I'll be back on line in about an hour or so. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 22:19, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have uploaded to File:Toll Texas 1 new.svg, File:Toll Texas 45 new.svg, File:Toll Texas 49 new.svg, File:Toll Texas 99 new.svg, File:Toll Texas 121 new.svg, File:Toll Texas 130 new.svg, File:Toll Texas 161 new.svg, and File:Toll Texas 255 new.svg. File:Toll Texas 550 alternate.svg should be moved. -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 23:18, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the broken ones thanks to some help at the help desk. I will leave implementation to the folks in WP:USR. Thanks! -- Gridlock Joe (talk) 02:29, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
