Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Not sure where to place a request like this so I'm putting it here. Can someone move my file File:Alfred C.jpg to its correct name, Alfred C. Chapin.jpg? More cats, please[edit]

Hi, it's pleasant to see all these old pictures arriving, but most are categorized only by architect such as Category:Buildings by Frank Freeman or corporate name, or other single topical cat. Better if you can also give them a local category such as Category:Brooklyn, New York City or any broader or narrower neighborhood cats that may exist and apply. Yes, I probably will add some more categories later, but I find that trying to figure out the most appropriate categories is often a difficult job as one really has to have a good grasp of the category tree. And given that I just wrote a bunch of articles to go with these images, I just haven't had time to get everything done. We all have our little specialties; there are plenty of good free pix on the Web and I'm glad we have smart people digging around and finding them. Summertime my specialty is to bike around the metro area snapping Wikiphotos. Winter, stay indoors more, poking around the city and suburban categories where my summer photos are, Commons:Geocoding mine and others and moving them up, across, and mostly down the tree. Thus I'm pretty familiar with the local tangle of categories. My periodic patrols of chronically overstuffed cats such as Category:New York City often turn up pix that need moving, but if an item isn't in any of the local categories then it doesn't come to my attention until it shows up in an article I'm watching or something. So, yes, even if you accidentally land it a bit high on the tree or in a slightly wrong branch, you will at least enable my fellow cat wranglers to wrestle it into its proper place, while if it's not in any geographic cat at all then its odds are slimmer. Artefacts at certain resolutions of scanned images[edit]

Hi. I see you wrote "I learned the advantages of scanning and uploading images in .png" in Commons:Graphics village pump/April 2021#Artefacts at certain resolutions of scanned images. For uploading photos on wikis, a png version will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version instead or in addition.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:52, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
