How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Inostrancevia problem

Hello FunkMonk, I have a little problem with the picture of File:Inostrancevia latifrons12.jpg, due to the fact that the animal's insicives are too large and that some reconstructions show the teeth of Inostrancevia exposed to the air, this confuses me a little. It is better to put the old...Amirani1746 (talk) 14:21, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

No animals with big canines have exposed incisors, so it simply doesn't fit with anything we know. I can just make the muzzle larger, but I'm not entirely sure what the problem is supposed to be. So don't revert without discussing. Also, upper teeth can be covered by the lower lips as well in modern animals. Just look at your own incisors; where do they go when you close your mouth? FunkMonk (talk) 22:46, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
The problem, is that if you look carefully at the new picture, especially at the location of the incisors, you can still see the traces of them (in your place, I would have deleted them). In addition there are animals whose teeth are semi-exposed in the open air, which is quite possible for gorgonopsians, if the reconstructions would be invalid, then there would be a report that such reconstruction would be invalid. Amirani1746 (talk) 12:11, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
What you're seeing are the lower incisors, because the mouth isn't fully closed. Even in the original image, it's clear the mouth isn't fully closed (notice the gap between the jaws along their length), so the teeth would be visible between the lips. FunkMonk (talk) 12:59, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Borealestes serendipitous.jpg ‎

I'm fairly sure the image is a heavily altered photoshop of an image of the 3d model of the skull of Borealestes created by Matt Humpage in collaboration with the researchers behind the 2021 study (Model can be found here. You can tell it's not been directly drawn because the zygomatic bar is not clearly distinguished from the coronoid process of the mandible, which is something you would definitively include if you were drawing it by hand. Many of A. C. Tartarinov's "own work" uploads appear to be produced by the same process. Hemiauchenia (talk) 04:41, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

I think they're borderline cases, but I removed the copyright tag. FunkMonk (talk) 08:12, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

De-adminship warning (Feb 2022)

This talk page in other languages:

Dear FunkMonk. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights and also additional permissions (bureaucrat/oversighter/checkuser/interface-admin), if any, on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2022 before 11th March, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you! -- 4nn1l2 14:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

RE: Rugops skull white background.jpg

Thanks for bringing it up. I took it myself while visiting the Natural History Museum of Milan and removed the background before posting it. Mariomassone (talk) 07:18, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Nice, I see you've added your name as author, the "unknown" was what was confusing, hehe. FunkMonk (talk) 12:05, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Too long Flickr names

Hello! I found here your report from 2017 about the problem of the Upload Wizard with handling too long Flickr filenames. I'm still having the same problem, so I opened a bug report on Phabricator here, in case you are interested. Mbkv717 (talk) 12:05, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
