Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you too! Thanks for the dinocard. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 12:51, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
Good sir, I had no idea how else to get a hold of you so I finally created a profile here and sent you a message. I have borrowed, and attributed to you, your illustrations of dinosaurs for my blog (dinooftheweek.blogspot.com) off and on a few times. I always check that they are free to use before I do, but I wanted to ask permission and say thank you. Dinooftheweek82 (talk) 21:55, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, and feel free to use the images for whatever you want! Heheh, I see you didn't like the Camptosaurus, the tail could perhaps be thicker, but recent studies show it could not walk quadrupedally, as it was unable to pronate its hands. FunkMonk (talk) 21:58, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi FunkMonk, as Commons:Tinget seems to be little frequented and as you "have learned the dark side of FOP", I am asking you for expertise about how to possibly keep this image on Commons. The problem: the statue of Cissi Klein was created by a living artist no:Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik and is thereby likely copyrighted. As you know, Commons:FOP#Norway is valid only for buildings. Do you see any way to legally keep it? Would it be feasible to contact the artist and ask for permission? --Túrelio (talk) 16:36, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Hmm, as far as I can see, all we can do is contact the sculptor/s about a license for the specific photo, his email seems to be here[1], or just locally upload an image of the statue as fair use... FunkMonk (talk) 17:37, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Are you well-versed enough in Norwegian to draft a permission request (regrettably there is no :no-template on Commons:OTRS) and to communicate with him? It's not that urgent IMO, but we should not ignore it for another year. --Túrelio (talk) 17:52, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, written Danish and Norwegian is almost identical (and I know most of the differences), so that would be no problem. Could you make a draft in English? Then I will translate it and send it. FunkMonk (talk) 17:57, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Last year I had asked OTRS-volunteer AFBorchert to draft a request for the same scenario (which is actually quite different from the standard permission template) in German. I'll try to translate that into english over the weekend. Regards. --Túrelio (talk) 19:29, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Alright, cool! FunkMonk (talk) 19:44, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
You have mail. --Túrelio (talk) 21:58, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Yup, I'll send you my translation soon, and send it to the artist/s too. FunkMonk (talk) 12:49, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Anatotitan or Edmontosaurus annectens?

Hi FunkMonk,

The Anatotitan and the Edmontosaurus annectens are one and the same sp. or they are two different dino? I ask because in some wikipedias they are separated, and in others they are the same one. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 09:08, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

They are the same, but maybe the name Anatosaurus will be used again soon, it's kind of complicated! FunkMonk (talk) 09:38, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

So should I rename the Anatotitan in the Hungarian Wikipedia Edmontosaurus annectens? or should I wait a while? DenesFeri (talk) 09:57, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

You can wait, because in any case, Anatotitan will not be the name used, Anatosaurus will, but it hasn't been published yet... FunkMonk (talk) 10:12, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

OK, thank you! DenesFeri (talk) 10:27, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Platygonus leptorhinus.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Indian Peter engraving

Hello FunkMonk. You've lifted some guilt from my shoulders by identifying the Indian Peter engraving as not being a copyright violation. Thank you for that. You'll see however that the uploaded image reveals a National Portrait Gallery tag that detracts from the image, so I think you should delete it anyway. Maybe I could replace it with this image [2] from Flickr, but I am uncertain if that's allowed. Do you know if it's permissible to put the link to the Flickr page into the Source box but still state that it's public domain because of its age? Kim Traynor (talk) 10:42, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, as long as an image was published prior to 1923 in the US, it is in the public domain there. If the author died more than 70 years ago, that goes world wide too, so you should be more than safe. FunkMonk (talk) 15:54, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
And you can just upload the image directly to the same page. Click on "Upload a new version of this file". FunkMonk (talk) 23:17, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Funkmunk, in your 2nd posting on this VP thread, you surely wanted to say "above", but not "below" (needs proof that all models are below 18). By the way, did you note this thread? --Túrelio (talk) 20:15, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

I didn't say all the girls were minors in all of the categories, but those in "naked/topless adolescent girls" certainly are, by definition. Other cases are clear due to their underdeveloped bodies, and I don't mean just the breasts, but overall proportions, etc. They are at early puberty at most. FunkMonk (talk) 20:42, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Ähem, you don't need to argue with me, I just wanted to notify of a likely typo. --Túrelio (talk) 20:47, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Request

Excuse me, are you an admin?.--Giggette (talk) 06:10, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Well, I wonder if you can help me, recently I changed the colours and add borders that I forgot in my map File:Viceroyalty of New Spain Location 1819 (without Philippines).png (I'm the author of this map) but an user started an edit war [3], [4], [5], what can I do?, can you protect my map?. --Giggette (talk) 06:17, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
In this case, it seems you've uploaded over an existing map. The easiest way to get around this would be to simply upload your version as a separate file (under a new name). Then no one will have anything to revert back to. FunkMonk (talk) 06:21, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
But the existing map was created by me and I just changed the colors. --Giggette (talk) 06:27, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I see, I got confused by the different username. In that case, I think you should get to decide, but what is the missing text Kintetsubuffalois talking about? FunkMonk (talk) 07:15, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, just look them please [6] and [7] and you can see the newest is biggest and I added more details ("not missing text there") probably because I removed the names of the viceroys on the sea but they were just moved. The newest is more detailed and bordered, and it has a similar style as my another map File:Mexico 1824 (equirectangular projection).png. Can you protect it and revert to my newest?. --Giggette (talk) 07:34, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Could you make a version without borders? Those are usually not recommended on Commons. Then I will protect the file, to prevent edit warring. Then a discussion might be started on the talkpage? FunkMonk (talk) 07:45, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
What?, are you suggesting that I must remove territorial boundaries? (borders), well I reported my case on Commons:Administrators_noticeboard but there's not an answer yet that's why I resquest your help in this please, there is already an edit war. --Giggette (talk) 07:57, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Hahah, no no, I mean borders around the image, if there are any. I see there were some in earlier versions of the image. If there are none now, just upload, and I'll protect. FunkMonk (talk) 08:01, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Oh lord, I didn't notice that, the borders around the image, sure I can remove them. Thank you. --Giggette (talk) 08:06, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
I'm not allowed to upload another one. --Giggette (talk) 12:23, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I see it was protected by another admin. In that case, I can't just unprotect, upload your image, and protect again,I'd advise you to contact the admin who protected the page[8], then I'll chime in. FunkMonk (talk) 13:27, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
I know but at least it wasn't revert it to the previous one to the edit war by admin. --Giggette (talk) 13:52, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Please can you explain me What's going on?. What have I not explained well enough?. Any help?. Did I omitted something? Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#User:Kintetsubuffalo. --Giggette (talk) 19:38, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your attention. --Giggette (talk) 05:53, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Drawings or paintings

Re: Category:Svenska fåglar (von Wright). Hi. Is this authors work in this book drawings or paintings. I changed the description, because they looked like paintings, but then I thought that I could not tell the difference. I am not very good on languages, so I can not read any of the Finnish book. The issue came up on the Wiki article on the Woodlark. Snowmanradio (talk) 21:38, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

The Swedish title says they are drawn. They appear to be coloured lithographs[9], so that would make sense. FunkMonk (talk) 22:44, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
I have changed it and called them coloured lithographs in the description heading for the category on Commons. Would the colours be painted on by hand over the lithograph? Snowmanradio (talk) 14:56, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Sometimes yes, but even colourisation seems to have been duplicated automatically at some point, hard to say what was used in this case, the book itself may indicate it somewhere.FunkMonk (talk) 15:58, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you.

Stanton F. Fink

How do you know that Stanton F. Fink=Apokryltaros? (i.e. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Hallucigenia fortis.JPG and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Hallucigenia sparsa.JPG)--GrapedApe (talk) 04:06, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Because I know him from English Wikipedia, Deviantart, and Facebook. You can just ask him. FunkMonk (talk) 05:34, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
File:CThoatzin.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi, I took the file out of the cat because I thought files weren't meant to be included in cleanup cats manually. Sorry, I didn't know an admin put it in. I'm new to Commons, but have been on Wikipedia for a few months. Have I missed something What have I missed? Best wishes, RainCity471 20:40, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Not manually? How else? FunkMonk (talk) 21:26, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Makes sense. The other ones are iffy, because those posters were made to introduce them to the US market, so it is unlikely such photos were produced and published there first. FunkMonk (talk) 20:29, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

The 1965 files were originally uploaded to en:wp and were moved here. We hope (talk) 20:43, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

If they are moved back, a "don't move to Commons" template should be added there. FunkMonk (talk) 20:49, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

If you can let me know when they are moved, I can add the templates. At the time these were moved, I had over 100 files there which were being moved. Most were photos and were moved without the original uncut front and back, so I had to rush to get those before they were deleted there and move them here. It was hard to keep up with. Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
File:Fadwa Suleiman.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid. Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

Allosaurus europaeus

Dear Funkmonk,

I discovered you refused to delete the file on Allosaurus europaeus that I uploaded a couple of months ago (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Allosaurus_europaeus_def.jpg). An original photo of the specimen hasn't been published in the literature, therefore my supervisor Octavio Mateus, who named and published the taxon, asked me to use the artwork version visible in the article. I asked to his brother Simao Mateus, author of this artwork in Mateus et al. (2006), his permission to use this figure. In the meantime, since I'm the author of the current illustration of Allosaurus europaeus and I therefore have the right to remove it from Wikimedia commons, I will ask you to have the kindness of deleting it or removing it from Wikipedia, pending on the artwork of A. europaeus to be uploaded if Simao Mateus agrees.

Regards,

Christophe Hendrickx

Alright, but then it is another process, you should make a formal deletion nomination, and say that it is because you as the author want to delete it (rewoke the license). Since it is not technically a copyright violation. FunkMonk (talk) 20:27, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Gallery linking from WP

I had the same concern, that many galleries linked to from WP are horrible, whereas the category tree may be well organized (though some are not, of course). I finally figured out, as you may have, how to solve this:

{{Commons}} links to the gallery of the same name

{{Commons|actual gallery name}} links to the gallery name indicated, which may be different from the article name

{{Commons Category}} links to the CATEGORY of the exact same name as the article

{{Commons Category|actual category name}} links to the category which most closely corresponds to the article, but which has a different name.

hope that helps. I would say that unless the gallery is really comprehensive, change the coding on the WP page to target the category instead.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:39, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Yup, I only figured this out very recently! FunkMonk (talk) 17:54, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Drawing of dorsal and ventral view of Triarthrus

Hi, You uploaded File:Triarthrus becki.jpg. I have recently extended en:Triarthrus, including the identification of the species. According to recent literature the species depicted, even though it is called Triarthrus becki by Beecher himself in the caption, is in fact Triarthrus eatoni. Perhaps you could consider whether this needs to be mentioned somehow? Kind regards, --Dwergenpaartje (talk) 20:39, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Well, I guess it could be explained in the file description? FunkMonk (talk) 21:32, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Question

Hello. Can you please explain to me why is this file nominated for deletion? It says no source although its a derevative of several other files as it says in the description. I asked the admin who nominated it but haven't recived an answer yet. Can you please replay in my discussion page? Thank you--باسم (talk) 09:05, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

my question

Hi FunkMonk,

I have uploaded this picture: File:Akodon azarae 1.png. I would like to know if everything is ok with this. Have I do everything correct? I have 29 other pictures like this. I won't upload them if this one is not done correct. Please answer as soon as you can. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 09:23, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Looks alright, though there might be higher resolution scans of that volume on Archive.org? FunkMonk (talk) 23:05, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi,

OK, thank you for your opinion! I have only this pictures. Cheers! DenesFeri (talk) 09:21, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
