LOC-image

I notice you're adding the LOC-image template to a number of images. But I'm afraid that the id parameters you're using are no good. Please check the results after your edits - if you click on the link in the LOC image box, you'll see it just goes to an error page ("Handle Not Found"), which isn't very useful. Be aware that every Library image has its own unique ID, which you can find on its bibliography page. --Davepape 20:38, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I've gone back and fixed the ones that you didin't. --Evrik 20:11, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Great. Always good to see someone else making use of the LOC & cleaning up the stuff we have. One thing I ought to add - {{LOC-image}} only provides source information, it's not a copyright tag (unlike the misleading & often misused PD-loc that it kinda-sorta replaces). So you should include an appropriate PD license as well. For the FSA/OWI images you've uploaded, {{PD-USGov}} would be the thing to use; others might be {{PD-US}} or {{PD-old}}. --Davepape 20:45, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
    • We can't have a template that says "this image is PD because it comes from the Library of Congress" because that's not a valid statement, unfortunately. There are many photos that the Library has on its website which are in fact still copyrighted (and the Library presumably displays under fair use); there are many more for which the copyright status is unknown. Basically, we need to look at each photo and determine if there is a sound reason to believe it's PD. Luckily there are some collections for which the Library makes blanket statements of PD-ness, such as the Farm Services Administration. (I keep meaning to write up a page summarizing the various details about using the LOC PNP site; sooner or later I'll get around to it.) --Davepape 20:57, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Huhu

Well, seing your edits on this wiki, I don't see why you should not try running for an admin. Your contributions seem to be good, except for the mishap cited above ;-). Go ahead! notafish }<';> 00:20, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: An assessment

Why do you want to become an admin? A convincing and honest answer to this question is what will win you support. What would it allow you to do that you can't currently do? How do plan to position yourself within the community? How do you see the role of the admin in interacting with the rest of the community?

As for your edits, I would like to see more involvement with Commons namespace/especially deletion requests, and I recall some fairly immature edit-warring with Juiced lemon. Would you use your admin powers, for example, to block users such as Juiced lemon?

Your administrator nomination

Unfortunately, it failed this time. However, I think will be good idea to listen to critique and I hope next nomination will be successful. --EugeneZelenko 15:21, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Then a clear instruction for sorting the saints shoud be given. I noticed that several early saints, who are also Orthodox Saints, were catalogued as "Roman catholic" saints alone. Ditto for other christian denominations, and ditto for the reverse (Orthodox saints who are saints also for the Catholic church not being catalogued as catholic saints). If you want to keep the separation, please work out some instruction to help people to understand how to sort out saints. And in this case, the Christian saints should be deleted, since all saints should be sorted by denomination. --G.dallorto 15:41, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

I suggest we may discuss about it in the discussion page of the entry, if you agree. My doubt is whether it should be useful multiplying categories to match all denonimations who consider a person a saint. But if such were the decision, I shall adapt. BTW I am not interested in saints, but in art history. So I often have to categorise works of art by subject, and saints are a very frequent subject. Therefore I need to know the rules. --G.dallorto 15:48, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Order of Santiago

Please do not use templates such as {{duplicate}} for purposes for which they are not intended. Thank you for your future cooperation in this matter. AnonMoos 23:13, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Dude, if you don't know what you're doing with the templates, then please just stop using them!!! "{{duplicate}}" is intended for precisely what it says, for EXACT image copies, which is quite obviously not the case here. "{{SupersededSVG}}" is for cases in which the shape and other relevant characteristics of the SVG image approximate reasonably closely the shape and other relevant characteristics of the raster image -- which is also rather clearly not the case here. This is a case of "{{vector version available}}" at most (and some might say that even that is debatable). I'm sorry if I'm being blunt, but I'm getting really REALLY tired of people rushing around and seeming to feel some obscure need to frantically try to delete all PNG's which have a remotely analogous SVG -- even if the SVG has quite a different shape than the PNG, or is of low quality. And I'm far from the only one, as you can see from the current discussions on Village Pump. AnonMoos 01:54, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Each of these three things is not like the other two...

SVG conversion

OK, now I've made an SVG version of the PNG file for the sole and exclusive purpose of keeping you from running amuck with the templates. Hope you're quite happy with taking up my time in this way... AnonMoos 14:12, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm sure you're acting in "good faith" at some level, but you inserted yourself into the middle of a long-running controversial issue, you grossly mis-used templates on two separate occasions, and you seem quite reluctant to ever admit that you can make any kind of mistake. The combination of these three factors means that I find your behavior rather annoying, and that I also see little reason to conceal my annoyance. AnonMoos 16:34, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
In both cases, you used them in a situation in which they were not intended to be used, and were not appropriate. AnonMoos 17:11, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Geocoding

Hi. Could you please use {{Location}} or {{Location dec}} instead of the other templates when giving coordinates to images, as per Commons:Geocoding? The choice of which map service to use should be left to the user. --Para 18:12, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I see you're still using other templates. Is there something wrong with GeoHack? Could it be improved somehow? Perhaps you could use a MediaWiki or a client side script to add the local map links? --Para 09:10, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Right, I expected the reason to be something like that. The GeoHack page isn't as usable as it maybe could be, so that's understandable. The thing is, it shouldn't be for you to choose which services are proposed to users, as the IMHOs can be different for everyone. I for one prefer the Google Earth interface over any other, but it's not linked in the geolinks template, and really no template that lists external services is going to satisfy everyone unless of course it lists everything like GeoHack does. I'm not really sure how GeoHack could be improved, but if you have any ideas, please let me or anyone else working with it know. Meanwhile, would you be happy using the standard templates recommended on Commons:Geocoding if there was a script to add your favourite links wherever either of the location templates is used? It shouldn't be too hard to write one, and I can volunteer to do it if it helps consolidate the standard templates used on Commons. --Para 19:29, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
There we go, I wrote a little script for the job. See for example an image with the location template and another image with the location_dec template. Is that sufficient? If you like it, you can install the script in your monobook.js to work with all Commons images like so. --Para 23:14, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm having trouble with the monoboook. back to the original point. I like the output format of the {{Geolinks-US-hoodscale}} template. It links to geohack and gives four easy to use mapping services in one place. I'll use any template that makes it easy for people to access the data. Evrik 17:48, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Please do not use your own templates, but instead have the browser format the standard ones to your liking. I don't see you having edited your monobook.js to install the script. It's a javascript file where users can add functions that will be executed only for them. All you have to do is add the line includePage('MediaWiki:Geolinks-US-hoodscale.js'); to User:Evrik/monobook.js, and hard-refresh your browser so that the scripts will be reloaded. After that any image page with a {{Location}} or {{Location dec}} template will show as if it was {{Geolinks-US-hoodscale}}. You can even recommend it to people who like the same map services as you do. This keeps the geocoding consistent and lets you see your favourite map services. If someone prefers seeing other services, they can just copy the while script over and edit the links. Commons geocoding must be done using the standard template, as otherwise the data is not accessible for all reuse. --Para 18:10, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Right. There's a project on enwp to make the template there disappear, but that's a bigger job than here where we have only a few people using it and can otherwise try to make the geocoding consistent. The script doesn't make {{Location dec}} look exactly like {{Geolinks-US-hoodscale}}, but almost: they both have all the same links. In my browser the description page of Image:Memorial Hall Phila.jpg looks like this. Is yours different? --Para 18:53, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

There was a problem with the script that made it not work with some browsers. Yours may have been one of the unsupported ones, which would explain why you weren't seeing anything different. The script has now been fixed and should work with all major browsers. Could you try the above mentioned image links again please? If they work, you can then edit your monobook.js to have the script run with all image pages with location templates. --Para 19:32, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Image help

Hey, Evrik. I had a couple questions; hope you don't mind. First, there's an image someone uploaded some time ago that clearly is a fake of an 1830s cover page but is being presented as the original. How does one get this deleted from Commons? Also, there's an image on Wikisource that should be moved to Commons. How do I do that and preserve file history, etc.? Thanks! --Midnightdreary 14:22, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

This is the file: Image:Poe_TheNarrativeOfArthurGordonPymOfNantucket_title.jpg Arthur Gordon Pym. It's definitely a fake (well, more like a recreation). --Midnightdreary 23:06, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: LoC

Yeah, the HABS/HAER archives are confusing in how they're listed differently from other images. I've changed Image:Memorial Hall Phila.jpg to use what seems like the most appropriate ID. --Davepape 04:07, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

RE: Havoc wreaked

I'm writing to both you and OsamaK because sometimes what happens around here is a succession of errors. First Image:Calendário Asteca.jpg got tagged because it had no source, and then it got deleted because the omission had not been fixed. Fortunately, Image:Calendario Axteca.png already existed.

Do you realize that the image Image:Calendário Asteca.jpg was used on hundreds of pages on more than 20 wikis? Do you realize that Aztec sun stone has a variety of similar images all based on the calendar?

Okay, Jic was notified that the image had no source, but really. That was a problem that could have been more easily fixed - and in much less time than it took me today to go and fix the problem across all the wikis. Next time, please stop and think about the effect that deleting an image may have - especially one like this one? Cheers.Evrik 17:56, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

First I have to thank you that you have replaced all the images around all wikipedian projects.
But next time do this: Write on my userpage a short note that Image:Foo is still used, but should be replaced by Image:Bar. Or you set the same text on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. This user is a bot which does the same as you did, but whitout that you have to do such a alot of work.
Because I have a look at my page at least once a day it is easy to fix such problems.
Note the following: I told CommonsDelinker to replace Calendário Asteca.jpg with Calendario Axteca.png so it shouldn't be used anywhere (even "check use" tells you so. It needs some time to update it)
To useage:
It was used in a template which was used very often so "was used on hundreds of pages" isn't really exactly (depending on how you interpret it).
In general:
Please not that it's impossible to keep files without a source or/and free licence! You can't keep fair use files because they are used somewhere.
Please also note that Calendário Asteca.jpg was uploaded on 2005-04-08 and hand no source infromation since it got uploaded. On {{No source since}} you can read that the media file, which was tagged with {{No source since}}, "is missing essential source information" and "the file can be speedily deleted seven days after this template was added' and the uploader was notified". As you can see on Jic's talk page he was notified. The template was added on 2007-10-14 by OsamaK. I deleted it on 2007-10-31. So it got deleted 17 days after {{No source since}} was added which is twice as much of the time as it should be kept. Not mentioned that there was no source for two and a half year!
I don't know why Jic didn't add a source, which could be just a webside or something like that. Even on en.wikipedia you need a source for fair use pictures. I think that it is not so difficult to add a simple webside or whatever to a page which can be edited by everyone, anytime within two and a half years.
I checked out en.wikipedia for more source information, but it got uploaded to en.wikipedia a half year after it got uploaded to commons. May you find out where it is from.
I hope that you understand why I have to add a deletion request to Calendario Axteca.png
If you don't know:
Source=PNG created from Image:Calendário_Asteca.jpg
Calendário_Asteca.jpg was without source information -> "PNG created from Image:Calendário_Asteca.jpg" is no valid source

Why don't you "AGF" (concept which does not exist here, BTW). At the time of my Flickrreview, the image was a copyvio. I had every right, nay, the responsibility to tag it as a copyvio. Next try, try getting permission before uploading the images. Regards, Boricuæddie 00:25, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
BTW, you said, "Hardly, you could have used {{FlickreviewR/reviewed-fail-recent}}. [ sic ] " FYI, User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-error is a template that says that the image should be reviewed by a trusted user or administrator to determine the validity of the license. I am a trusted user, and Commons:Flickr images/reviewers (our coordination page) tells us to tag images that failed flickrreview as copyvios. Please try to actually read before leaving such harsh messages. Thanks, Boricuæddie 21:21, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
"It doesn't say anything about having to tag the image as a copyvio." Dude, it's called common sense. Guess you don't have it... --Boricuæddie 10:56, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

No, I just corrected it a little while translating the related article into french. I made it a little brighter and corrected the perspective so that the walls could be vertical. I thought it was more convenient for a masonic building to be bright and vertical. ;-) The problem is that I missed to explain all that in the appropriated field while uploading it. Apologies. --Christophe Dioux 17:06, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure how to notify the original image uploader (Bea on French Wikipedia, although that user appears to have been inactive for at least a couple of years). Would you be able to help me with that?

Also, if this image does end up getting deleted, it should be replaced with Image:CondomUse2 alternative.jpg. I see D-Kuru had some advice on how to replace images across the MediaWiki projects - I'll probably try to follow his advice if the Posecondom image ends up deleted. Don Bosco

Evrik, you said:

"The name is fine as it is as it complies with current langauage policy.".

The name is not fine because the character, Don Bosco, is an international figure known like that in 127 nations and many languages. Even the name of the character is not "John", but "Giovanni". I will follow procedure in this matter, since it belongs to my expertise. Thank you for your comment and Happy Chinese New Year. --El Viajero Paisa 02:34, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

There are enough evidence provided to move the name of the category already. On February 13 I opened a votation about the matter. So far there are four votes in support and any formal objection. Please present your objection again in that votes' section. --AlbeiroR24 15:30, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Along the discussion there is enough material to state that the correct "English" name is "Don Bosco" and it does not go against the current policies of Commons. I would like to continue with the organization of the material about Don Bosco, since I have enough files to download related to the subject with all its legal conditions. As you were the user who stopped that process, I would like to ask you please give green light to do the move of the name. Thank you very much. --AlbeiroR24 16:25, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

You still alone in your position. Until now there are many evidences to make the change and your observations and reasons still your positions. I will move further and I will call the attention of other administrators. --AlbeiroR24 14:54, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi there After having a go at me for not discussing something, I see you've been active on Commons without any attempt to discuss something I specifically asked for your comment on! Re: Image:OFCCP-Seal.png

Hm... most of the time I've just been finding vector logos/seal in government publications, and extracting them -- no creativity on my part required :-) I searched around for OFCCP publications, but couldn't even find the version you uploaded -- where did you find it? You might also try posting it at w:Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Images_to_improve. Possibly using the eagle from Image:United States Department of Defense Seal.svg would be a good starting point. This one is simple enough that I may have a shot of making an SVG not look too bad, but I don't have much time right now, and may not have the talent either ;-) Knowing where you found this version though may help though.
