Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 15:03, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi - thanks for your resonse. You seem to have categoriezed most of your images, but have missed some (which are the ones i saw), for instance Image:Chainsaw ms280c 1.jpg and Image:Chainsaw helmet.jpg (maybe Category:Protective clothing?).

As to the category things: you always have the option to put your images into a category, or on a "gallery" page, i.e. an article. Some people prefer galleries, because they can be structured and more information can be supplied about the images. Others prefer categories, because it's much easier to put categories links into the upload form that to edit article pages. I usually use what already exists.

I personally would like to unify the concept of categories and galleries, because for a media repository, this devision does not make sense - see Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote for details. But it's not trivial to implement that.

Redundant categorization is a real problem on the commons, people just seem to like to do it. Generally, an image should not be in a "parent" categorie if it is also in a subcategory or gallery. Only images that do not fit any sub-category or gallery, they should be listed in the parent-category.

I agree that there is still a lot of chaos on the commons - but it's an advantage, too: it's much easier to change things around here, experiment with new policies and such - that's what I like about the commons. There is a lot of work to be done... So, thanks again for contributing, and I hope you will continue to help us in the future :) -- Duesentrieb 15:21, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi again - to find "unused" (and uncategorized) images, go to Special:Unusedimages - you will have to look for your user name there. Images are sorted by upload date, so yours would be somewhere on the last page of the list. Unfortunately, ther's no better way I know of, it's probably easier to look at all your images.

About searching: the index of the search engine is updated only every few days, so it takes a while before your contributions are found. Also, images are unfortunately not in the default scope of the search, but you can change that in your user settings. To try it out, type some garbage into the search box and klick "search" (not "go") - below the (empty) list of search results, you can choose wich namespaces to search in - check the image namespace there.

I hope we will get image search as a default, soon... -- Duesentrieb 18:38, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
