Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Image scanned from textbook
You cannot release images into the Public domain only because you scanned them. The images are still copyrighted by the original copyright owner. For example Image:Miroslav Krleža.jpg might not be in the Public Domain, because it is unlikely that the author of the image died more that 70 years ago (see en:Miroslav Krleža, he lived until 1981). So I marked some of your pictures with "missing source or license information". To see which images are affected you can see here. If you have any questions, please contact me on my talk page. --Matt314 09:42, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:348px-HimmlerOberfhr.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Image Tagging Image:Gustav_Krupp_von_Bohlen_und_Halbach.JPG
Thanks for uploading Image:Gustav_Krupp_von_Bohlen_und_Halbach.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Image:Hitler calendar.jpg
Hi! It's me again... I just saw you uploaded this picture of Hitler. Why is it a work of an employee of a federal government agency? On the source page it says it comes from ushmm.org, this is a museum, not a federal office (even if it was build with funding of the US government). Furthermore it says: Credit: USHMM, courtesy of Geoffrey Giles, Copyright: USHMM in the image description. Could you please explain why you tagged it as PD-USgov? --Matt314 13:33, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- You said USSHM is a government page. I doubt this, it does not say anywhere that it is related to the federal government (although some are government officials mentioned on the page) especially when you see that it is also (co)funded by private donors. [1]. Actually I think the image cannot be kept at Commons at all, so I will nominate it for deletion. Only pictures that are clearly in the Public Domain can be at Commons. --Matt314 15:24, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- "all government pictures are PD" - wrong! Until today pictures by government employees in Germany are copyrighted (there is no "official picture" of Mrs. Merkel, German chancelor, on Commons!). The US in one of the very few countries in the world that has "PD because made by government". If you mean "PD-GermanGov": This template is not for photos, mainly for texts of laws and court decisions. --Matt314 15:45, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Paintings by Salvador Dalí
Hi! Given that Dalí died in 1989, isn't there a problem with copyright? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 11:21, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- But this is a derivative work from a copyrighted content. The original painting being copyrighted, you have no right to release your own reproductions freely. Or have you? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 11:26, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Quoting Commons:Derivative works:
- “If I take a picture of an object with my own camera, I hold the copyright to the picture. Can't I license it anyway I choose? Why do I have to take care of other copyright holders?
- By taking a picture, you create a new, copyrighted work (i.e. the photograph). At the same time, the rights of the original still exists and don't go away. By publishing the picture, you do something only the original copyright holder is allowed to do. That's why you won't be able to use your own photography of a copyrighted work (except as fair use) unless the creator of the original gave you permission to do so.”
- According to this, you cannot upload paintings by Dalí on Commons... Jastrow (Λέγετε) 11:30, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Quoting Commons:Derivative works:
- An ancient pot is in the public domain, whereas Dalí's paintings are not. And this museum isn't a public space: it's privately owned, you have to pay to get in. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:25, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- The picture is yours, but not the rights pertaining to the depicted object. Therefore, you can use your picture for a private use, but not publish it: “the rights of the original still exists and don't go away. By publishing the picture, you do something only the original copyright holder is allowed to do. That's why you won't be able to use your own photography of a copyrighted work”. If you wish we can discuss it on Commons:Deletion requests. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:38, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- That is the whole point of Commons:Derivative works: you cannot modify nor reproduce a work of art which is not yours in the first place. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:47, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
The discussion should now stand at Commons:Deletion_requests/Image:Soft_Construction_with_Boiled_Beans_(Premonition_of_Civil_War).jpg. Thanks, Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:55, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- The Delete tag means that a page is listed for deletion, it doesn't ask for immediate deletion. Thus you are not to remove it while the discussion is going on. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 15:14, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

The gift of New York World-Telegram & Sun photos to the public domain only applies to ones taken by staff photographers, which the Library of Congress identifies as such. The NYWTS used a number of photos from outside sources like AP, and these they could not donate to the public domain, since they didn't own the copyright to them. --Davepape 07:36, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion warning | Image:Béla Bartók.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. |

About copyrights
Hello Edgar Allan Poe.
Thank you for contributing to Commons.
I want to advice you to PLEASE read Commons:Licensing! Many of your uploads are not public domain. Please ask for advice before you want to upload images from websites, if you are not sure if they are really OK. As you can see on your userpage, many of your uploads have been deleted. So PLEASE, save us all the work of checking your images, by asking first, on Commons:Help desk or Commons_talk:Licensing.
Thank you.

Sockpuppet
Checkuser evidence has confirmed that Poirot is a sockpuppet of yours. Since you have only created this account to upload copyright violations, I have indefinitely blocked that account.
Hereby your very last warning: In case you misuse this or any other account to upload images that are not allowed here, this account will also be blocked for a long period. In case you need advise on whether an image is allowed here, ask on Commons:Help desk before uploading! -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:54, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

The Adolf Eichmann trial in 1961 is not 50 years ago. The image you uploaded was instantly deleted. Thuresson 14:27, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
German Nazi images
Stop uploading German Nazi images. They're copyrighted in germany and in many other countries. These images from the USHMM or the NARA have special status in the U.S., but they're generally not in the public domain in other countries. The cCommons does not accept such images. Lupo 20:12, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Re:Deletion requests
Sure, I'll take a look when I get back later today. If they haven't been open long they probably won't get closed, but any older ones or ones with consensus or clear results I will take care of. Take care! -- Editor at Large • talk 13:08, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Ethiopia 1987-1991.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:Ethiopia 1987-1991.gif.
If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain.
Thank you. __ ABF __ 13:55, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

It is a photo made anyway by unknown photographer in 1933. Anyway it is suited to Anonymous-EU ( 70 y from publishing) Best regards:

Andros64 03:10, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
- Copying an image from the web without suitable information on the author doesn’t make a photo an „anonymous work“. You have to prove that the author never claimed authorship. For pictures by German Photographers: The image is in the public domain, 70 years after the author’s death. --Polarlys 11:00, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

SFRY images
Just because the SFRY doesn't exist anymore, that doesn't mean the copyrights had vanished. In fact, the successor states (including Croatia) all started out with the SFRY copyright law, and then wrote their own laws. As far as I know, all successor states also deposited formal declarations of succession with the UNESCO (for the UCC) or the WIPO (for the Berne Convention). Lupo 21:33, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello Edgar Allan Poe,
You have uploaded several images that are copyright violations and you have done so despite our requests not to do so, and despite our instructions. Shortly after your last block expired, you startet to upload many copyvios again. What do you think, are these flickr users copyright owners of these historical photographs from Honecker, Goebbels, Petain, Gorbachev? …? No, they are obviously not. Uploding a copyvio on flickr under a free license doesn’t make it a free work (Just as an addition: a lot of these copyvios weren’t even licensed under Commons compatible licenses, but CC-ND, CC-NC and so on.) Regarding Yugoslavia:

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 11:59, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

This map contains really many fatal errors. 1. In 1939 Karelia, Petsamo and another chunk of land were Finnish. Here you presented Finnish-Soviet boundary as it is today. 2. Bessarabia was Romanian in 1939 (here it is Russian) 3. Dobruja was Romanian in 1939, here it is Bulgarian 4. The boundary between Hungary and Slovakia was quite different in 1939. Here it is the present one 5. Poland's boundaries were TOTALLY different in 1939: you cut off the entire eastern part of Poland (Poland bordered both Latvia and Romania in 1939) and you cut off Poland of the Baltic coast there where it really touched it - west of what is marked.
Please, consult a detailed map of Europe in 1939 and correct the above errors.

Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion.
