File:Bp-polish-codebreakers-plaque.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Photo cropping[edit]

If you dislike a picture, upload a newer version which is cropped or has any changes you like, but don’t force on others, especially the original uploader. You’re behavior on different platforms is worrying. I wish to avoid having to report you, but if you continue with that, I’ll do it. --Lecen (talk) 14:37, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lecen: Presumably you're talking about these two versions of File:Pedro II of Brazil 1848.jpg:

Left: your version. Right: my version.

This has nothing to do with "disliking" anything, and everything to do with serving the reader as best we can. Why you insist on miniaturizing the worthy Pedro II of Brazil to a tiny postage stamp awash in a sea of yellow, instead of cropping so that his head and shoulders fill the frame, is beyond me. As it says at en:WP:Manual_of_Style/Images#Editing_images:

An image's utility or quality may be improved by cropping (to focus on the relevant portion), cleaning up scanning artifacts, correcting color balance, removing red-eye effect, or other adjustments.

Or at en:WP::Image_use_policy#Cropping we have:

Within reason, crop an image to remove irrelevant areas.

The empty area around Pedro is clearly irrelevant and ought to be cropped out; otherwise you're forcing the reader to squint to see His Imperial Majesty and wasting precious space on the article page -- not to mention suggesting to the reader that the article's authors lack common sense.

This should be completely uncontroversial but -- surprise! -- you object. From our past interactions you appear to have a variety of rigid ideas impervious to reason, and have difficulty learning from more experienced editors -- see [1] just in case you missed it.

Since you insist on seeing everything as a battle, instead of just a good-faith difference of opinion, by all means "report" me somewhere -- I think here is the place to do it -- but send me a link so I can share the laugh with everyone else. Since you seem to want the various articles on imperial Brazil to remain monuments to your stubbornness I won't worry about this particular detail further. EEng (talk) 04:06, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering why the two versions looked the same. See File talk:Pedro II of Brazil 1848 cropped.jpg#Overwriting this file with the original version. Brianjd (talk) 12:29, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate overwriting images to crop rather than creating separate version[edit]

See: Commons:Overwriting_existing_files. Seriously, this is policy. Please follow it, thanks. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 06:37, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(For those playing along at home, this concerns the various versions of the image at File:Sacred_Fart_Activity_Center.jpg). Seriously, it's a guideline and should be applied with common sense, but as is well known common sense is in short supply at Commons. EEng (talk) 14:19, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken the liberty to mention you here. Thank you, Nemo 11:42, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Cast-iron plumbing pipe.jpg: I'm not going to fight over this, but may I strongly suggest that in the future if you do not like the decision by a still-active participant in Commons as to what orientation that person prefers for a photo that they took and uploaded, you can upload a derivative version rotated to your desires under a different filename instead of overwriting? Or at least, if you really think it merits an overwrite, you can contact the photographer and see whether they agree with you? COM:OVERWRITE makes it pretty clear that overwriting images in these circumstances is not generally welcome. - Jmabel ! talk 00:17, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh for heaven's sake. Did you not see my second edit summary [2]? How do I know the orientation was a "decision" and not just happenstance? At WP we have a principle -- perhaps you've heard of it: Be bold! Maybe at Commons the golden rule is Pussyfoot around and leave fussy messages on every minor thing. Érico (talk) 05:31, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pointing out that you don't understand something basic that all admins need to know, i.e. what constitutes vandalism, is not a personal attack. I suggest you spend your time educating yourself. EEng (talk) 05:34, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Érico: I had a look through a few of @EEng’s edits, and while they do seem to have an issue with cropping in-use images, they appear to be acting in good faith. EEng said that good faith edits are never vandalism, which matches my understanding of the word “vandalism”. Yet that is the word you used when you protected File:Congresswoman Pelosi meets San Francisco's District Attorney, Kamala Harris; March 30, 2004.jpg. I think it is natural for EEng to be offended by this. Am I missing something here? Brianjd (talk) 12:20, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EEng: Érico never said “don’t crop” (or, at least, they never meant to say that). They said “don’t overwrite”. CropTool lets you save the cropped image under a new name, which is what you should be doing here. Brianjd (talk) 12:20, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, well, they need to start getting some admins over here who are capable of actually saying what they mean to say. In fact, because User:Érico is in the habit of simply deleting talk page posts which cast him in a bad light, it's hard to reconstruct everything he said, but one thing he certainly did say was that I was destroying the quality of an image, which -- yeah -- was offensive. The guidelines over here are just awful in their inadequacy, so that Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Substantial_crop_or_un-crop, for all its talk of "minor cropping" and "essential composition", don't explain what those things mean.
Beyond that I'll just point out that there's nothing at Commons:CropTool even hinting that it lets you save under a new name. In fact, I still can't tell what, exactly, it does or why I would want to go through the trouble of setting it up. Here's what would be really handy: a tool which takes all the licensing and stuff for an existing image, and sets all that up for a new derivative image which you're ready to upload. I don't need something to do the cropping for me -- I can do that myself -- but it would really help to not have to set up all the markup and licensing templates and stuff. If this CropTool thing does that it should say so. EEng (talk) 16:19, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Strictly speaking, there is a hint that you can save under a new name: the option is shown in step 5’s screenshot. But I agree that this should be more clearly explained, and I have written a message on Commons talk:CropTool about this. Brianjd (talk) 14:36, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
should be more clearly explained – That's an understatement, since it's the sine qua non of the tool. EEng (talk) 16:06, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons is not Wikipedia[edit]

See w:User talk:EEng#Commons is not Wikipedia. Brianjd (talk) 12:36, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your taking the time, but I knew that. If you're talking about the above, I'd appreciate hearing to what specifically you refer. EEng (talk) 16:19, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For a start, in the most recent section (besides this one), you referenced the (English) Wikipedia guideline of “be bold”. (By the way, as I was writing this message, I found out that your overwrite was wrong even by Wikipedia standards – see w:Wikipedia:Be bold#File namespace.) Brianjd (talk) 14:36, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • you referenced the (English) Wikipedia guideline of “be bold” – Yes I did. And at the top of this page it says Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, EEng! ... Be bold contributing here.
  • your overwrite was wrong even by Wikipedia standards – No, what the guideline you linked says is that new images should be uploaded with new names rather than overwriting old ones. Doing otherwise risks having the old image confused with the new one. Therefore you must always be careful. The key question is what constitutes a "new image"; you seem to think this means you can never overwrite a file with a modified version of itself (such as a crop) which is obviously incorrect. More on point is en:WP:Image_use_policy#Cropping, which provides

Within reason, crop an image to remove irrelevant areas. But do not "throw away information"; for example, if a photograph shows George Washington and Abraham Lincoln together at a birthday party, and the article you're working on requires only Lincoln, consider uploading both the original image and the crop of Lincoln.

Now as it happens, I'm in a particularly good position to interpret that guideline, since I wrote it, and in the image under discussion () it is, at worst, a question of judgment whether cropping out the vase and expanse of wall would be "throwing away information". So no, it's not true that my overwrite was wrong even by Wikipedia standards.
Is there any other aspect of Commons or Wikipedia guidelines, or the interaction between them, on which you wish to enlighten me? EEng (talk) 16:02, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I replied in the deletion discussion, but wanted to apologize more personally than I did there. I appreciate the time you've taken to look into the rationale, and am sorry that my first reply was so aggressive. Hopefully my most recent response has a better tone, and we can get to the bottom of this together. Best, Wugapodes (talk) 04:56, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wugapodes, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for you ever since you did yeoman work several years ago propping up the teetering DYK machinery. You and I share the desire to spread knowledge, but at the same time I know you recognize the importance of making sure we're respecting authors' rights. Together we'll figure it out.
