Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. Thank you. Siebrand 04:47, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging...Permissions[edit]

The site that I acquired the image from, www.cyark.org, is a nonprofit that has a great number of Creative Commons-licensed images that are freely usable with site attribution and share-alike license. As I am a big fan of the site, and it has a large amount of good material for suitable for wikipedia, I use its contents frequently when helping to flesh out archaeological and heritage site entries - it provides unusually good quality images for Creative Commons-oriented stuff. Note open access statement at http://archive.cyark.org/about.php?subject_name=Grants and specific reference to Creative Commons licensing of images at http://archive.cyark.org/news_events.php?news_ID=12 . Thanks for looking out for copyrighted materials. DuendeThumb 01:47, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Cyark_qalatalbahrain_3.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Cyark_qalatalbahrain_3.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Most media files on that source are licensed, according to http://archive.cyark.org/copyright, under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commerical No Derivatives 3.0 license. That license not allows for commercial reuse, to modifiy their content or build upon. Commons is a file repository for freely licensed media files, files that everyone can use everywhere, forever and for every purpose including modification and commercial reuse. Per Commons:Project scope#required licensing terms this retrictions are not accepted on Commons. This applies to all CyArk images you uploaded. --Martin H. (talk) 06:44, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to correspondence I had with CyArk representative Liz Lee, they are releasing certain images into the full CC 3.0 domain sans the Noncommercial/No derivatives license and under Attribution/Share-Alike. However, as for Qal'at al-Bahrain, the images are under full copyright protection and I will thus remove all of them (see my wikipedia profile talk page). I will make sure that any CyArk (and other) images I post to wikimedia are released into the public domain, and the same applies to any user of wikimedia commons who uses images CyArk - Elizabeth Lee informed me that we should just email them about individual instances for permission and they will release individual images into the attribution/share-alike class of CC, and indicate so on those individual media on the CyArk website. elizabeth.lee(at)cyark.org is the email to use, they seem to be pretty generous folks over there. An example is found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Balakanche1_cyark.jpg, which links to http://archive.cyark.org/scan-shot-of-limestone-column-cave-of-balankanche-media, where the license was changed for an individual media item. --DuendeThumb (talk) 02:04, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I mark the images validly licensed under cc-by-sa at the source as "LicenseReviewed". I mark the images not licensed at source as lacking permission. Im unsure about
Do the CyArk have the written permission from the Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalschutz, a agency of the state of Bavaria? CyArk can not licene on their own if they not created the content, only the copyright holder can do that. --Martin H. (talk) 09:34, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Im done with checking. See your gallery or see the intersection of images in Category:CyArk not having a license reviewed tag. This are 15 images +4 images of St. Sebald mentioned above. --Martin H. (talk) 09:50, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for checking all that and making the inventory, I will forward this conversation over to Elizabeth Lee (you can as well, if you wish) and see what she has to say. I think it is worth the effort to get them to change the licenses on these individual items, as they are highly illustrative and many of these sites do not have comparable image media available under CC. --DuendeThumb (talk) 19:59, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update on CyArk images and licensing concerns[edit]

I believe the folks at CyArk updated all the licenses noted in the intersection above except for the Saint Sebald church images; it seems they are still waiting for permission on those. I figure if they don't change it in a week we should earmark them for speedy deletion. In the future, I will be sending an email to them to ask for a CC status change on individual images before posting them to Wikimedia Commons; anyone else seeking to use their images should feel free to do the same - elizabeth.lee(at)cyark.org --DuendeThumb (talk) 05:45, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Cyark laramie fort john.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

We had this above, to remember: File:Tikal temple 4 cyark.jpg is ok on Commons because at the source it says on the right side under Credits: "Copyright: Image copyright CyArk, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0". All files from Cyark without that Credit are not ok because of http://archive.cyark.org/copyright which says that the page is unless otherwise noted published under some unfree (non-commercial) Creative Commons license. In this case (http://archive.cyark.org/fort-laramie-earth-2) there is no free license indicated AND a clear copyright notice for other copyright holders - Google for the digital landscape model - is indicated. I delete it. --Martin H. (talk) 22:05, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

With due respect, please visit http://archive.cyark.org/perspective-of-a-digital-reconstruction-of-fort-john-during-the-fur-trade-period-it-was-originally-built-of-logs-in-1834-then-rebuilt-in-adobe-in-1841-media and click on the "credits" tab under the map at right - you will see the same permissions. CyArk has informed me they generally release select media under a CC-by-SA 3.0 license, I keep up on what those are and occasionally email the organization to request specific images be released into CC. Please undelete and perhaps look a bit more carefully on the next go-round, or place a note for correction, on images before deleting them - I am pretty careful about this stuff now. Thanks. BTW, the historic photograph I just uploaded from the same site is over 150 years old and authored by the US government, so it falls under fair use guidelines. ----DuendeThumb (talk) 22:24, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

wowow, carefull, I only answered on someone else nomination and gave you the instructions based on what i researched myself - you not gave any source or permission information with your upload. I dont think that the license can apply to those content contributed by google and that it not annuls the google terms of service which are linked inside the image. Please clarify this with CyArk if they have permission to worldwide release google content for commercial purposes. --Martin H. (talk) 22:28, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, so what I will do in the future is make sure that I link to the specific page that contains the permissions and is the source media profile page. Google did not contribute this content nor are they attributed as such on any of the media, from what I can tell from looking at the site all Google owns is the GoogleEarth map interface and NOT the actual media items. According to the CyArk website, which produced the media, this file can be used under CC, and to my knowledge it and all my prior contributions to commons (other than the ones you and I discussed a couple years back above) are licensed the same way. The page I linked in the paragraph above is very clear on this point and is the specific media page for the item in question. As the GoogleEarth plugin is problematic with my browser (Firefox), I do not use that to interface with the CyArk site; but again, nothing on the item's media page indicates in any way that this is Google content. However, let me know if you see anything that indicates otherwise on the media page. I will doublecheck with CyArk for certainty, but I think that in the meantime it'd be safe to undelete the image as the CC permissions are clearly delineated on the CyArk page for the specific media item as detailed above. I will also insert a direct link to this page in the information section of the upload. Thanks for your vigilance. ----DuendeThumb (talk) 22:46, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I stand corrected, blind to the Google logo right in front of me. I'll ask CyArk about it. --DuendeThumb (talk) 22:52, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I fully agree that the items (the buildings) is cyark. The landscape is all from google. So if just the landscape is cuttet away there should be no problem with cc-by-sa. --Martin H. (talk) 22:57, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
