EXIF Bot[edit]

For your efforts at Creating and Operating the new EXIF bot....

EXIF question[edit]

The EXIF bot is fabulous! But what does "check EWNS!" mean? China Crisis 11:42, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that's just to caution the user to double check the east/west north/south specifiers when using the decimal suggestion. --Dschwen 12:08, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok! China Crisis 12:55, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow[edit]

:)--Beentree 14:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Beentree, these notices should have appeared on your talk page. But the extra : in front of the User:Beentree confused the bot and it thus posted it on Sfu's talk page. --Dschwen 15:03, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hidden Cat for EXIF BOT[edit]

Daniel, I suggest creating a hidden cat for images tagged with EXIF bot. It seems that about 2000 images was tagged. --Nevit Dilmen 21:13, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that is a good idea. It would allow me to exclude those images more easily from further bot runs. I actually had several categories in mind. tagged / suggestion_added / broken_exif_data . --Dschwen 21:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Liberty[edit]

I will change that before the bot gets it. -- carol (tomes) 19:57, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I considered demanding an id on the camera that guy is using on the observation deck before I would support it. Did you stitch that or do you have a staff of people working on your images? Also, does your camera assist to align for vertical pano? -- carol (tomes) 20:03, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, if that doesn't appear life-sized to you, you just need a bigger monitor ;-). My old camera (Powershot G3) had a pano assist function. My current (EOS 5D) one doesn't, seems to be too cheap. I leave plenty of overlap and end up cropping away a bit from the edges. It's not that hard. It gets a little tedious when shooting a 40+ images pano. Then I tend to have a hard time remembering which parts I already shot and how far up and down I wanted to pan etc. --Dschwen 20:32, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had about 10 minutes in which I played with a canon, I don't remember the name but it was a generation or two back from the camera I put on my wishlist. The auto things took some really awesome photographs of the hummingbirds here. I downloaded the images and the owner of the camera decided that he wanted that camera back right then. The little blocker thing to help line panos up in the point and shoot seems like an easy hack yet useful if used along with a tripod. Interesting thing about that. Writing a gimp script that does that gets people published in magazines and their work protected by the community but writing a python script which passes layers in between scripts got me both humiliated online by the community I was (I thought I was) working with and the one that I am being forced to live in. I am not certain that should work as a model for a functioning system -- I stick with it because it should fail. That should fail, shouldn't it?
Monitor size should fit the room it is in, I think. I am not sure if everyone understands that there are two measurements -- the actual monitor size and the resolution of the display -- both are more useful in the middle range of regular human dimensions.
I became very jealous of you when I looked at the satellite image today.[1] -- carol (tomes) 06:21, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jealous? Hmm, ok. Right now it is pouring down cats and dogs, together with the occasional thunder this hust woke me up. We had to leave our windows open, otherwise it is getting to hot in our apartment. Two days ago I had my first tornado warning, sirens going off, and we were listening to national weather radio. The announced a tornado had touched ground close to a village 15mi west of us and was moving east. --Dschwen 12:51, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In Michigan, they would sound the alarm for a tornado when there was a warning anywhere in the county. Counties are really big and tornados are comparatively small. I lived at a borderline between counties and the sounding of the alarm was comical at best. At least once it went off with perfectly (for Michigan perfect) blue clear skies. I have never seen one but I have looked for them when my ears could feel their approach -- and my eyes. It was a feeling also as the phenomena is created by extreme pressure differences or results in. Often there is hail right before, but I have seen hail and not seen a tornado so this is something that I read or heard that has not proven itself very well. If the sinus in your face are reliable as barometers like mine seem to be, I suggest more crisis sensitivity to that than to the public warning systems -- I have no idea how credible the system is where you are though. I highly suggest watching if you are able to. They are beautiful, the storms that might become tornatic. Beautiful green clouds, I suspect green from the amount of water being contained. 40+ years of weather like that and I went from being a child who was deeply afraid of the thunder (my dad suggested counting the seconds between the lightning and the thunder and thinking about how far away the storm was -- 6 seconds was to equal a mile) to having a tree blow down in my backyard and being simply glad that the electricity and the internet were not affected. If you have only been there for a few years, I am going to recommend my dads cure for fear of the storms. The thunder is really very scarry and never ceased to be, and the method of counting the seconds between lightening and thunder kind of fails when there is no seconds between, but at the same while, it is kind of cool. Weather there made me understand that no one is really in charge or dominating the situation of anything anywhere. I like that understanding. The midwest storms made me feel both small and large; probably the pressure problems have something to do with that and the euphoria.... -- carol (talk) 20:41, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am actually uncertain to how many seconds equals how many miles now, but the idea is the same. -- carol (talk) 20:43, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's approximately 3s per km, and the en.wp article says In air at sea level, the speed of sound is approximately 767.3 mph = 13mi/min => 60s/13mi = 5s/mi. Ah well, close enough :-). My dad told me the same thing! --Dschwen (talk) 23:34, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since I wrote about that, I was remembering. I have to leave the literal world to describe the really close lightening strikes. They are as if god or some powerful force from above has spilled a drop of pure white light into the area. I have always experienced this in a structure (like a house), but right after it seems like it is completely dark -- but that might have been my eyes adjusting to the too much light and then the comparitively no light. The lightening that hit the tree, I could hear that crackle, but those big drops of light -- no sound and then the 'darkness' and the sense of time is seriously interrupted. My great-uncle was afraid of the plumbing during electrical storms. I think that this fear is justified due to his history of having some of the first versions installed. We argued about the safety of plumbing, he was a golfer also and my point was that more golfers are killed each year from lightning than people in homes from lightning and plumbing. I miss weather and that old man very much. There is another rumor about tornados and that is that you can see them if they are near on channel 3. I have no idea about that one, channel 3 was a never used station back in the broadcast years in Michigan. -- carol (talk) 23:59, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Giving cameras to writers of software[edit]

As inspired somewhat by the update of the image count.

Things I never see anymore are people who are trained to write software and able to write software who say "I have a camera now and am bored with writing software". The astronomy teacher whose labs I conducted loved computers more than the astronomy he was qualified for, which is the same thing. The problem with the second situation was that I was paid $4/hour to unqualified inspire people to look at the skies and work through the mathematics and the one on one that is needed for human brains to make that leap in being patient with the material. And he got paid to be a not so good at it teacher. Computers made his eyes sparkle though which is also unfortunate because the labs that were so cool to work through became computerized and maybe they are still cool but it would be different.

Lately, I read things that the hacker who ported GIMP to windows writes. He either got or was able to afford a nice camera. He maintains his 'status' by writing rudish things on his blog -- I don't know how much he commits any more, all it has done for me is make me sorry that I was enthusiastic about the tasks I had when I should have perhaps been paid for the enthusiasm. I took that photograph of the guy who picks up the garbage here. He was clearly showing off his ability to use the machine and manage the task. I also made a copy of the photographs and gave them to the little boy across the street because I see him watching the trucks as well. Then I started to see people who were very fake happy to be working.

How come I never read from a person who is qualified to write software that they don't want to write software now? Is bullying people to do something the same as writing a computer script? Interesting because I never approached writing scripts that way -- to me it was always little instructions to make some tasks easier.

Did you get your camera before you started to write scripts or after? I had one before I started; transfering the output from that to the computer was really difficult. I got a scanner after I got the point and shoot and I did not get much money for developing film.

I am just wondering if it is such a good idea to give the cameras to the script writers until they have finished their software or have clearly stated that they do not want to write it any longer. Perhaps there is a lot that I don't understand, but I have the ability to.

How come script writers don't ever say that they do not want to do that any longer? -- carol (tomes) 07:12, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, maybe because writing scripts is fun? (it really is bullying poor little computers to do the dirty work for you :-) ) I got my new camera in January'07, At that time I was already writing Wikipedia scripts (like the WikiMiniAtlas). It actually was the camera before that which got me involved with Wikipedia in the first place (one of my first actions was uploading an image from a Newzealand trip; I think I uploaded to en.wp back then (shame on me)). --Dschwen 13:01, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actual computers though, isn't it more like using a syntax and logic order that they can understand? Since I started to review (I almost typed 'While' here, heh) my computability theory stuff from 22 years ago (by any 'count' that is a long time) and I have a renewed respect for those machine language writers and the people who made the factory machines actually accomplish things. My question had more to do with the reasons that people with access are only willing to write the equivalent of paintball shooters (splatting templates on category and similar). Having respect for people who were somewhere before me keeps failing. I am not certain that a world that works that way is a good one to be in. I haven't been enjoying it much. Today, I learned that it might not be a good idea to reread some of your own personal writing before attempting to write something new, especially while dry. Mathematics in college was kind of cool, perhaps more 'cooling' to the instructors though. Ambiguity ceases and the answer is either correct or incorrect. I even appreciated that solutions could be 'correct until this point'. Although, the ambiguity was kind of there in high school, when I got As on the tests but didn't turn in the homework so I failed the class. It was very interesting to me in college how much I enjoyed doing the homework that I needed to do so that I could understand the course content. Making it through the qualifications might not guarentee what it is supposed to. It is the jumping through hoops problem.
Everything failing starts to be not my problem due to disqualifications that were wrongly applied though. Meanwhile, I certainly wish that I had not reread old writings today and were writing the things I wanted to write instead of whining here. Which I am doing -- whining. Sorry and thanks. -- carol (tomes) 10:56, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VICbot - first steps[edit]

Hi Dscwhen, We have started doing the first VI promotions. It is really more time-consuming to do the manual steps of promotion than I had anticipated (sigh)... and I was wondering if you could do an effort in automating some of the most straightforward, but tedious steps. I was thinking you you could start out by focusing on Commons:Valued image closure#Closing valued image closure steps 4-8. It is not so time-consuming to execute decision in step 1-3. That would measn that you bot should keep an eye on new VICs landing in Category:Promoted valued image candidates and Category:Declined valued image candidates. This can be done by, e.g., filtering User:Rocket000/VI CategoryWatch. The newly declined ones should simply be removed from the candidates list (step 8), whereas the promoted ones should be processed trough steps 4-8. Special note about some steps:

  • Step 5. If it is to hard to alfabetize in situ, they could just be adde to the page and sorted by hand afterwards
  • Step 6. Is probably hard to automate unless the scope exactly matches a gallery name. A lis of images needing to be checked for {{VI-tiny}} inclusion would be a good first help
  • Step 7. Notifying the nominator only could be the first and easiest step.

Cheers,

-- Slaunger 09:29, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ping. Is my proposal way out of line? We're drowning in noms to be closed. I woke up last night and worked for two hours closing but that only fixed a minor fraction... -- Slaunger 09:57, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, if I am annoying, but just the slightest hint of your view regarding this would be highly appreciated from a drowning VI closer. -- Slaunger 21:21, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops. Sorry. I was busy improving the QICbot :-). I'll take look at the task. --Dschwen 22:23, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great! -- Slaunger 05:49, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'm making some progress here. The bot is as far as detecting the VICs which are to be archived and tagged. Plus it extracts all important parameters to actually do the tagging and archiving. One question though: I'm analyzing the categories from the candidate pages (quick DB query), and it has states like supported, opposed, promoted, and declined. I presume the bot should act on the promoted/declined status, as supported/opposed etc. means that the debate is still ongoing? Could you start closing some candidates by just changing the status to promoted/declined, leaving them on the page? That would help me test the further steps. --Dschwen (talk) 16:20, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your assumption is correct. You should just look at the promoted and declined ones on the candidates page. I am just on my way out of the door, but I could close one or two now. -- Slaunger (talk) 16:27, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've promoted three and declined one, but kept them on the candidates page. There is a third state to consider btw, and that is "undecided" If there are undecided ones they should just be removed from the candidates list. I am so much looking forward to your bot. I hope we have managed to setup a system which is easy to automate. Concerning the Commons:Valued images by scope step, you should probably see the latest thread in Commons talk:Valued image candidates and perhaps voice your opinion there from a bots-point-of-view. -- Slaunger (talk) 16:37, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good. I'm going to watch the EURO2008 game now. User notification, image tagging, and candidate remove from list logic are working! --Dschwen (talk) 16:49, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. I only watch the fun games like when Denmark won over Germany in the EM1992 final... -- Slaunger (talk) 18:08, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just saw the end result. Well, Germany can still make it. At least now you do not have to concentrate on partying... -- Slaunger (talk) 18:39, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Its getting serious[edit]

Hold your breath. The first testrun of VICbot ist starting now! --Dschwen (talk) 20:35, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Please review! By the way, the List by scope now gets resorted every time the bot visits it. So if you want to edit the scopes (Removing articles a/the) it'll be resorted the next time the bot visits. --Dschwen (talk) 20:39, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I screwed up VICpromoted... --Dschwen (talk) 20:42, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That was not so bad for a first run! Minor detail: The edit message when editing Commons:Valued images by scope is a little misleading I think. Will it remove the undecided ones as well (I can try and close some of them)? Regarding the sorting on Commons:Valued images by scope I guess what you are referring to are the scopes as they are written in the subpages in Category:Promoted valued image candidates? How to you handle scopes with embedded links. I have had to remove the links in the scopes before inserting them on Commons:Valued images by scope - else the link breaks. Should we disallow links in the scopes for that reason? How about the {{VI-tiny}} tagging. I guess this is not done? Will you maintain a list of candidates to check for inclusion of {{VI-tiny}} in gallery pages in the existing cat/gallery structure? -- Slaunger (talk) 21:49, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Encouraged by these first trials i will go close some more. -- Slaunger (talk) 21:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. The VICpromoted should have worked. This is really odd... --Dschwen (talk) 22:18, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why have you placed a {{VI}} template here? Is the Pyhton(?) code available anywhere? (I am semi-proficient in Python). -- Slaunger (talk) 22:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was testing the subst:VI-add, using the output of my... ...Oh... right, i'm a moron. I confused two templates! --Dschwen (talk) 22:33, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Code is here. No guarantees for being up to date though. --Dschwen (talk) 22:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have you noticed that {{VICpromoted}} also can handle a review parameter? -- Slaunger (talk) 00:21, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, just like the one I added to QICpromote. But in this case it is a little more difficult to correctly extract the review and guarantee a correct template. --Dschwen (talk) 02:01, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Strike that, its done. Will test it tomorrow. --Dschwen (talk) 02:52, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is a special case which needs handling. That is the case when image!=subpage. In that case {{VI-add}} and {{VICpromoted}} should be parsed an extra subpage parameter and the subpage parameter shall be used to construct the link in Commons:Valued images by scope. -- Slaunger (talk) 00:30, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm already testing for image!=subpage. --Dschwen (talk) 02:01, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(indents reset) I have closed a bunch of candidates more. How do we handle step 6 in the closing procedure - the part about adding {{VI-tiny}} on the existing gallery best matching the scope (if such a one exists). I guess this requires human interaction. How about a list of images to check, where entries are added by VICbot and removed by users as they go check for galleries to include   on?

Hmm, natural language processing in python.. ..slightly beyong my capabilities. I see two options:
  1. force the scope to always match a gallery page name
  2. tag all occurences of the image in galleries
--Dschwen (talk) 17:43, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest the following rule should be obeyed by the bot
  1. Add {{VI-tiny}}Scope to the cation of the image if it is in a gallley name with name Scope. This will solve a lot of Species name scopes.
  2. If the image is not in a page in the main name space, ignore the step
  3. In other cases let the bot add the image to a VI-tiny checklist page, which shall be checked by a human user from time to time. It would be helpful if the list included ordinary and edit links to pages in the main namespace where the image is used. The maintaining user then clears entires which have been checked and where the logo may have been added. -- Slaunger (talk) 19:35, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Check Commons:Valued_image_candidates/tag_galleries. Yeah, I know I have to write a link clean procedure. Check Special:Contributions/VICbot. --Dschwen (talk) 20:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, scope lines should now be automatically scrubbed of wikilinks and {{w|links}}. The bot tries two methods to find a gallery page for each scope. Fitst it looks for a wikilink inside the scope, if there is none it looks for a gallery page with the same name as the scope. This worked for roughly 50% of the candidates in the last run. The rest is up to the nominators. --Dschwen (talk) 15:20, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good. Next step is assistance for closure of most valued reviews. I have closed an MVR now, which you can play with. I have completed step 1-4 in Commons:Valued image closure#Closing most valued reviews and I was hoping VICbot could do step 5 which is exactly the same as for VICS except the VICs are in the MVR section on COM:VIC with a scope heading. Do not worry about demoting yet, as we have not yet seen one (and I also think {{VI-former}} needs some tweaking first). If that works i was hoping you could automate step 4 as well? -- Slaunger (talk) 22:36, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I have processed Commons:Valued_image_candidates/tag_galleries and I think it was OK. I did not understand though, why these were on the list:
They are not used in pages in the main name space. Thus, I had guessed VICbot would have filtered them away?
-- Slaunger (talk) 22:56, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The bot puts all images for which no gallery could be found on that page. It does not check for use inthe mainspace first. I'd still have to code that. --Dschwen (talk) 13:10, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK. How 'bout the MVR stuff I wrote about before that? -- Slaunger (talk) 14:30, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I fail to see what the issue is with the image. It's a great image. On the right where the crane is, is that the Freedom Tower under construction?. Also I think you should add this Image:Staten Island Ferry terminal.jpg photo! I love it! Bidgee 19:41, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I don't quite understand the issues benh has either. The ferry is listed on QIC. The WTC site should be a little more to the left (behind the white stair-like building). Not sure what the building under construction is. --Dschwen 19:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Space Invaders style sheet hacking?[edit]

Lately, I have been kind of thinking ('kind of' is accurate here) that QIC is almost the worlds slowest version of space invaders. All it would need to really make the affect effective is if with every new entry, the left margin could increment a single pixel in whatever direction the slowest game was going at the time of upload. What did the original space invaders move, perhaps 10 pixels in one direction and then back again? -- carol (tomes) 15:16, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--Dschwen 19:47, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

without a tripod[edit]

You were using a monopod, weren't you? -- carol (talk) 18:15, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was using a di-pod.. ..my legs. And I might have held on to the fence. But seriously, with that much light taking that shot is not hard. My lens does have a stabilizer, but I don't think it was necessary at all. --Dschwen (talk) 18:38, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was also thinking about ways to hack the 'no tripod at the white house' problem -- a monopod would be risky, but not as much if it was retractable and looking like a walking stick (I hesitate to use the word cane -- I have lived on Normal street and also on Abel Street....). The wake in the water is not that much, but the boat was still moving. If I might ask a personal question, how much coffee that day? -- carol (talk) 19:02, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, well below my average intake. That's for sure. Might have been one cup at that time. By the way I didn't even know there was a no tripod rule for the White House... --Dschwen (talk) 19:05, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure there is, but guess what happens if they mistake your tripod for a rocket launcher. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 19:22, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was a comment that was in the reviews -- I stopped to think about what rules they may or may not have. There is a rumor that one of my classmates was a Secret Service person and I also worked with a Wildlife Inspector who had been a Secret Service guy. The classmate who I knew as a young adult -- to me, anyone could probably sneak a boat behind him if you were to just engage in enough conversation with him. People grow up though. The WIGuy said that it was one of the most boringest jobs he had had. -- carol (talk) 19:26, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of NSD's based on Global viewdeleted[edit]

First off, in case you didn't know - this is something we'd _like_ to have. We don't yet, it isn't even to the point of being possible. In fact at the current juncture it is technically impossible to do this. That being said, we're not going to suddenly stop doing all the work we normally do because we might get a feature in 6 months or a year. Lastly - the images are still NSD. So... I've reverted your removal of the NSD's. Thanks for your understanding ^_^ --ShakataGaNai Talk 22:05, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

QI Recently Promoted[edit]

I just did this. It can be easily undone or just wiped away. My question is should I continue? -- carol (talk) 01:46, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow, work is really piling up there. Let me see what I can to. Now that User:VICbot is running I can continue work on the QICbot an maybe finally implement support for that thing you started. --Dschwen (talk) 02:06, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So I should keep working on it then? You like writing this stuff? If I remember correctly, this was your suggestion and I think I started it somewhere in my user/area but at this point -- I have no idea where this is going...
So I should keep working on it then? I was kind of inspired by Simonizer picking up the FP stuff again, honestly. I don't want to work with the gallery that were left there -- the watching of some people and the not watching others is kind of its own problem, isn't it? -- carol (talk) 02:34, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I like it and I'll write something. Give me a one or two days. --Dschwen (talk) 02:38, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A few days should not be a problem.... -- carol (talk) 02:51, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Panorama[edit]

At QI you noted I should try panorama shots. I don't know how to do them, simply. If you know any good online guide that I could use to learn such tricks, let me know.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 17:00, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Fist of all check http://hugin.sf.net and download the software. Then experiment a bit. Shoot a scene with several pictures ( there should be 30/50% overlab between adjacent pictures). Load those images into hugin (the assistant will do most of the work). Then learn by doing ;-). It is important to rotate around the entrance pupil of the camera ( most of the time thats somewhere in the center of your lens). For further reading I suggest http://wiki.panotools.org/ . Good luck, it's fun! --Dschwen (talk) 18:11, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brain dump[edit]

I have two things that I need to get off my mind. One is about your cow. Right after I mentioned that I was 'pulling for your cow for POTY' I saw something extremely similar on American Dad. I think it was this one: en:Widowmaker (American Dad!), Stan gets drunk and goes to Roger for advice and Roger is thinking that Stan was there for other reasons and the pose Roger took on the bed was as much like that cow as a simple line drawing of an alien can look.

The other thing, also television but this one is from 1990s Nichelodean and I have been thinking and thinking about it since I looked at the statue of liberty verti-pano. From en:The Adventures of Pete & Pete, and this is perhaps one of my all time favorite television series. Grounded for Life from Season Two. Young Pete digs out of the basement with a model of the statue of liberty. Simple yet cool with all of the analogy.

Do you use bitorrent? -- carol (talk) 21:20, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Carol! I used to watch Adventures of Pete and Pete on the german Nickelodeon channel. Dubbed, but is was still great. One of my favourite shows back then. I have something for you to test. Check out this link, and tell me if it works for you. --Dschwen (talk) 21:24, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One of my first german internet friends had watched a dubbed version of Dr. Strangelove and the dubbing had missed the phrase "Gentleman, there will be no fighting in the War Room." I mention this now because of your last few years in the midwest and that seeing the show in its native language, it might be a thousand times better to see -- or more.
This is an interesting link. If I 'save' it, it looks as if I have done a whole bunch of work here. Heh. You should use the link and save it -- it is cool and it seems extremely easy to work with. Nice work if it works! -- carol (talk) 22:10, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you should use the show changes button to see if it works! I just went over a whole bunch of images. The corresponding function in the bot is still missing though. But when it's done the bot will move the images off the page onto their appropriate gallery pages. --Dschwen (talk) 22:16, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was an interesting moment though, with the save button and stuff. I don't like getting credit for what others have done -- it doesn't feel right and it kind of interfers with my patience in waiting for credit for good things I have accomplished. A truly remarkable wikimoment though. I happen to know that it was a lot of work to do that much for the hypothetical bot. -- carol (talk) 23:04, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
btw, do you have any experience with wikified gang rapes at english wikipedia? I was just wondering how long they last and stuff. Being attacked by several small pricks is moderately amusing (perhaps ticklishlike) but kind of a sad look at the state of things there.... -- carol (talk) 23:06, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rumors of the new QICBot requested[edit]

I was looking at the tool and the images that still needed the template applied and I found Image:Reine i Lofoten LC0148.jpg which has been given a technical template for placement and my question is can or will QICBot be able to manage two templates? If I were manually sorting these images, it would get the HQICBot template for Subject/Places as well. Gah, and then the further placement (later) into Subject/Places/Mixture. The H here for the word Human, not hope and not help and not hellfire and not.... -- carol (talk) 20:26, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was a great match, although Alves may not agree ;-) Did you see my humble request to also extend VICbot to process the closed candidates in the most valued reviews section? The closed ones there can safely be removed as I have copied the closed MVRs to a monthly log. The next step in this is if the bot could also copy each MVR to a monthly log as explained in "our usual" thread above... -- Slaunger (talk) 14:42, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, but I'll have to finish some work on the QICbot first. --Dschwen (talk) 15:01, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here is what you need to do to just the same thing for MVRs too
Change
page = wikipedia.Page(site, pageName + "/candidate_list" )
candidates = unescape( page.get() )

# abort if the qicbot marker is missing from the page
if string.find(candidates, "<!-- VICBOT_ON -->") < 0:
        print "the string <!-- VICBOT_ON --> was not found on page " + pageName + "/candidate list"
        sys.exit(0)

#
# get potential candidates from db
#

for row in range(len(data)):
        name = data[row][0]
        ...
into
subpages = ["candidate_list","Most valued review candidate list"]
for subpage in subpages :
        page = wikipedia.Page(site, pageName + "/" + subpage)
        candidates = unescape( page.get() )

        # abort if the qicbot marker is missing from the page
        if string.find(candidates, "<!-- VICBOT_ON -->") < 0:
                print "the string <!-- VICBOT_ON --> was not found on page " + pageName + "/candidate list"
                sys.exit(0)

        #
        # get potential candidates from db
        #

        for row in range(len(data)):
                name = data[row][0]
                ...
That would be a great help. -- Slaunger (talk) 07:51, 21 June 2008 (UTC) I have added the VIC-bot-on marker comment on the new subpage. I suppose its intended use is if VIC bot goes haywire or if the closer is in the closing process and do not want bot interference while doing it? I guess it makes sense to have such a marker for each main section the robot processes? The valued image sets comes next. -- Slaunger (talk) 07:58, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spot Bot[edit]

Sometime when the skies are clear there, you should get a photograph of that. I also had the idea that you should take a few upside down photographs because I would not be able to see the dust spots in buildings and such.

User:Base64 said that camera was sent back for cleaning. There is also a Canon building in that pano, so I wonder if that person just walked it there or what.... -- carol (talk) 05:55, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Daniel! Ich verstehe nicht warum diese Kandidat immer noch auf den VIC Kandidatliste ist? Ich habe es seit lange geschlossen. (Yeah I know this was probably an insult to your languange, I just need to practise once in a while or my mediocre Germans skills will vanish entirely) Grüsse, -- Slaunger (talk) 21:00, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, pretty good! :-). Anyway, the coil thingie is gone. The nomination was lacking the subpage parameter. I made it optional in the bot now (if it is missing it is just taken to be the image name, that's how it should be). --Dschwen (talk) 22:08, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, the structure of MVR is exactly the same as the other VIC candidate list? Hm. --Dschwen (talk) 22:11, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the only thing is that each MVR subsection should also be copied to a monthly log, but we can start out having this done by hand. (This is the case for the closed MVR right now). Just having VICbot to do the usual thing for the MVRs would be great. -- Slaunger (talk) 06:47, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When do you predict it will be possible for you to continue the VICbot implementation to include MVRs? -- Slaunger (talk) 23:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
ooops. yeah, I've been really busy lately, plus I spent a lot of time on the qicbot lately. I'll get to it this week. The changes are a little more complicated... --Dschwen (talk) 02:02, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Danke. -- Slaunger (talk) 09:14, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh, it is even more complicated. --Dschwen (talk) 02:44, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Now I only need a postprcessing step that removes empty sections... ...nah, tomorrow maybe, gotta go sleep. --Dschwen (talk) 03:15, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. What you did now was the most important. the removal of empty section is on the "nice-to-have" scale. Next thing will be Valued image sets. Here we really need bot logic. Stay tuned for more work;-) -- Slaunger (talk) 14:43, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh boy, I'm already dreading this task ;-). Anyway, I just implemented empty section removal. This should be useful for QICbot as well. --Dschwen (talk) 16:09, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fireflies[edit]

Beanfield?

Also, was that evening improved or not affected by or not improved by the winter which proceeded it? -- carol (talk) 02:46, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I honestly have no idea how the severity of the winter affects the firefly population. But it's a good question. I shouldn't say this, but on those small farm roads i turned my headlights of sporadically to drive in almost complete darkness. That is quite a sight live. --Dschwen (talk) 12:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The question was more about the mindset of the observer. Do you think that a psychological chilling and warming via a bunch of nameless faceless user instances at an internet location can ever really provide the same up and down that the weather where you are has provided to you? That image made me regret the dullness of where I am as much as your gray images did from a few months ago. -- carol (talk) 20:02, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Was this you in the dark? -- carol (talk) 20:16, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, didn't see that one. Yeah, Dilaudid is my secret alias ;-). And to answer the previous question, yes, the harsh anticlimatic winter makes you appreciate the summer all the more. --Dschwen (talk) 20:55, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Broken wikiminiatlas.[edit]

I get an error atm on en.wikipedia: "SyntaxError: Parse error wikiminiatlas2_extern.js (line 90)". It is about the line for language ko. It doesn't contain ' ' or the , Also, if you could set class="noprint" on the icon of wikiminiatlas, that would solve issues for people that use the CommonPrint.css for their printing. TheDJ (talk) 15:48, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uahhhrgh. Noooo. Sorry about that oversight. It is fixed now. This really shouldn't happen. Thanks for the noprint suggestion. That's a great idea. I'll get right on it. --Dschwen (talk) 16:39, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

late to the party[edit]

I just did the ladies in waiting today with javascript enabled. All of my previous comments about ease still exist, btw, but the javascript radio menus are very nice in that situation!

Here is a difference between the new gallery system which is on its way compared to the old one. Your empire state building photograph is an example. It has been templated for one of the technical galleries but in the old system, it could be in multiple galleries and also reside in the manmade structures and point of view or whatever.

Did I say that the radio menus for this were nice? They really are. I am not a lover of gui, except when it is not clumbsy and a time stealer. This is an example of gui I could begin to love. -- carol (talk) 20:00, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OICBot is no longer fixing broken signatures, eh? -- carol (talk) 01:02, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean? It never fixed them, it just complained about them. --Dschwen (talk) 12:31, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, QICBot doesn't shat his disappointment at poorly formated or missing signatures any longer. -- carol (talk) 12:40, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I didn tell him to stop doing that! He's being a naughty bot. Do you have an example? (btw. I just invested a half an hour in cleaning two images with spots) --Dschwen (talk) 12:42, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
