Hello, Dorkinglad!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

{{flickrreview}}[edit]

Hi Derek I apologise if I have done something wrong. I downloaded these two pictures from a website where the pictures' publisher had made them available for use on wikipedia. I'm still learning about the process Thanks Greg

No problem, we all start one day. --Dereckson (talk) 13:04, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{flickrreview}}[edit]

Hi,

The {{flickrreview}} template is for pictures from Flickr.

Don't use it for others sources, as we've some the automatic Flickr validation workflow, who tag your pictures with no valid source and push them to deletion (with hopefully in theory 2 human reviews before). --Dereckson (talk) 15:30, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(User talk:dorkinglad) 20:00, 14 July 2011 (UTC) Dear Magog - I do hope you found the article to be of interest to you. The photograph was taken around 1860 and was first published around 1900 in a biography of P B Shelley. The original is in the family archive at the Horsham Museum. Thanks for pointing out the need for a source. may I ask how I explain family photographs such as the Medwin one to which you are objecting kind regards Greg[reply]

Proposed deletion of Pilford Medwin[edit]

Hello, Greetings from Sussex, UK. I have removed one of the copyright tags which was placed there in error about nine years ago. Do I need to add another tag to the one still present for the image?

I do still own the book from where I sourced the photo. The photo is of a relative of mine who died around 1880 so I've no personal memory . There are other photos of him held elsewhere in the family so I can provide another. However he wasn't particularly notable, a solid country lawyer . A very kind man I understand who looked after his wayward brother (another distant relative)in later years.

The book from where I sourced the photograph is obscure and published in 1926. Obviouly the photograph of Pilford Medwin is from around 1875(?). William Albery was a local historian who died at a great age in 1947. Here is some information on him. http://www.horshamposters.com/Friends-Horsham-Museum/who_was_william_albery-5086.aspx

I do not believe this photograph is still subject to copyright for the reasons stated. It was my error to select the wrong licence information. Please could you help me select the correct licence banner? i Finally where else do I put this information? Dorkinglad (talk) 20:51, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Bishop Cuthbert Bardsley.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Hi Sir, This image came from Flickr. I'm responding to a request to find an image of Bishop Bardsley and this one appears to be in the public domain. I have now provided an original source for the photo. It was published in a now defunct regional programme that commemorated the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral. ://www.flickr.com/photos/herry/albums/72157625777516069 Dorkinglad (talk) 22:20, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:EricTreacyPhotographer.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Hello Sir, I have attached a legitimate licence to the image. The current image is of a book of railway photographs published in the UK in 1946. The title page is not attributed and does not appear inside the book. These books were sold at newsagents in the 1940s with generic covers. The one included in this image was published seventy four years ago.Dorkinglad (talk) 20:48, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Eugene Zelenko, The upload for Roffey Road Halt is taken from a postcard dated around 1910. As I understand it is therefore in the public domain. Indeed it has been on a number of websites for some years with no comment. I will review as to which license to choose. Dorkinglad (talk) 21:10, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, EugeneZelenko, I have now reviewed https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roffey_Road_Halt_on_the_LB%26SCR_from_Three_Bridges_to_Horsham.jpg and selected appropriate licences based on several other examples that are on wikipedia. Thank you. Sorry for the confusion. Dorkinglad (talk) 21:38, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi EugeneZelenko, I have reviewed File:Hoe Farm Halt, a private platform on the Selsey Tramway , photographed in 1936.jpg as you have requested. I'm actually not sure what it's status is. The photographer Mr Kilner is deceased but was alive in 1982. The photograph was taken in 1935 and latterly published in a pamphlet/booklet which I have credited. The photograph is available elsewhere. I leave it to your judgement as to whether I have selected the correct licences or whether it should be deleted. It's not terribly interesting except to a railway enthusiast of a particular vintage. Dorkinglad (talk) 22:42, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pay attention to copyright
File:June Tabor Rosa Mundi (2001 album).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

I've withdrawn the article. I had problems in finding a correct licence so feel free to delete. Similarly the photograph used for Angelo Motto. That was uploaded so many years ago that I can't recall where it came from. Dorkinglad (talk) 21:16, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yours sincerely EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:55, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EugeneZelenko, I don't think HilaryStratton.jpg is an infringement of copyrite as have I used the original photograph which was taken in c 1963 by a relative whose photographs were bequeathed to my possession by a relative. I have released this picture to other sources without comment but I will, of course, review the licence as requested. best Greg Dorkinglad (talk) 21:14, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Alphonse Chigot, postcard to celebrate Journée du Timbre". Stamp Day 1978.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Alphonse Chigot, postcard to celebrate Journée du Timbre". Stamp Day 1978.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hi Yann,
Since this is a postcard from 45 years ago published by the French Posatale Service to commerate a Stamp Day (journee du timbres) and features a long dead local artist I think I would be wasting my time to now seek permission for the image. It's not clear who I would need to contact the Carte Postale or the Parisian publisher Blondel La Rougery. The image of Alphonse Chigpt was first made in the 1890s so presumably could be used. The image is not important and can be deleted. Thanks
