First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Photos[edit]

Hi Dirk! Welcome to the Commons, lovely photos!! When I first saw this one I thought it must be a reflection, the clouds look like ripples in the water... And the insects are awesome too, as well as the blue striped frog :)

Anyway make sure you give all your images categories (see Commons:Categories), or add them to articles/galleries here, otherwise other people won't be able to find them!

cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, and I also need to identify a lot of species (how else can I categorise them?). Any tips on how to do that? I'm still uploading. My idea was, when I'm done with that, to put the unidentified ones on one subpage, sorted by class or order, and then aks people somewhere to see what they recognise. But I'm not sure where that 'somewhere' might be. DirkvdM 05:34, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look at Category:Unknown species - go into the subcategories and use the most specific subcategory you can find. If you can find the right family-level classification, for example, another idea is to post the image on the talk page for that family in your Wikipedia of choice and ask people if they can identify it. There's quite a few good identifying-people around, but it's best to try and figure out as much you can yourself before approaching them. :)
Many of your photos can also be categorised by location and subject (a good few of them are not plants or animals). There is also a tool called CommonSense (linked in the welcome message above) which can suggest categories based on the image description and keywords you input. Be warned, it is frequently stupid (displays no common sense whatsoever :)) and its suggestions should only be a starting point. Definitely don't just copy and paste its suggestions. HTH. pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:13, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a look through and managed to identify some (check 'related changes' to your full gallery, or see my contribs, to see which) - MPF 21:40, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! For convenience, I've put the ones you identified here. DirkvdM 18:30, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Dirk - thanks for the note! On the Strelitzia, yes, the leaves belong to it (they are related to bananas, and have similar foliage, though the flowers are different). Strelitzia is native to southern Africa, so it has to be cultivated (or at least an escape from cultivation) in Costa Rica - MPF 23:41, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

categories[edit]

hi dirk,

i removed the redundant categories "Araneae" and "Diptera" from your fine pictures of unknown spider and fly species. as they are already categorized as eg. "Unknown spiders", and Unknown spiders is linked under Araneae, using Araneae as a category clutters this category up. if you have any questions, contact me. thanks for the pictures, waiting for more to come ;) --Sarefo 18:45, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Buildings by country[edit]

Hi! As I saw you placed a lot of picture in Category:Buildings and structures. This is a top-category. Please don't place any pictures there, instead use the adequate subcategories. It would be nice if you could remove your pics from there. If you need help to find the right one I would be glad to help you. Thx and Greets, TomAlt 12:38, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:040428 0767 ch.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:DirkvdM&action=edit&section=4

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Apparently something went wrong there during the upload, because I didn't name it properly either. But I also uploaded the same image as Image:DirkvdM ant with leaf-crop.jpg, so this one can go. Don't know what happened there. Thanks for pointing this out. DirkvdM 14:42, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category Unknown birds no longer exists[edit]

Hi Dirk, I have changed cat for your Image:DirkvdM orosi valley bird.jpg from Category:Unknown birds to Category:Unidentified birds as your image was the last one in that cat. I hope that's ok with you. --Túrelio 07:35, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dirk, this plant is definitely of genus Cornus. I only don't know the exact species. The four large yellow leaves are no petals but bracts that surround a cluster of tiny and greatly reduced true flowers. The whole thing is called a “false flower” (pseudanthium). Described where? Nothing has been addded after my upload, neither on the page itself, nor on the talk page. Is this a bot response or something? In case I'm talking to a human and it's about the licence, I already explained that. The KNMI has told me that usage is free, provided the source is mentioned, as it is. Which is not surprising, since it's a UN image. But I don't know what licence that corresponds to. If you're human, could you tell me? DirkvdM 17:26, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see all the illustrations to the artcle I wrote have been removed without any further explanation. As a result the article is now half-cocked. Nice. Someone noted it now needs rewriting, but no-one has done it and neither will I. I'm fed up with this. I've received an email from KNMI, the Dutch meteorological institute, whose site I downloaded it from, saying it is ok to use the images, provided the source is mentioned. What else do you want? This image license shit is really starting to annoy me. I really put effort into getting it right this time and still the images get removed, effectively destroying a large part of hours of work. I won't put this kind of effort into Wikipedia again. DirkvdM 19:07, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geocoding Request[edit]

Hello DirkvdM, at the Geocoding project we have noticed that you uploaded a number of pictures from one of the less covered regions on earth. Maybe you could consider adding coordinates to some of your images. They will show up on the WikiMiniAtlas and the Google Earth Commons-layer. You can find instructions on how to add coordinates to your images at Commons:Geocoding. Thank you in advance! The Geocoding team

temporary note to myself[edit]

I often found it difficult to determine the location of the camera, mainly because it's hard to determine the distance, especially for photographs that cover a large area, and when it is unclear how much zoom was used. It's usually easy to determine the location of the main object and the line of view ('heading'), but where along that line the camera is was often a wild guess. Since I didn't understand how to use the 'heading' tag, I added a note about that between brackets, as well as precision.

So wouldn't it make more sense to also add a coding of the loication of the main object and the line of view? So one can make a choice between the two. Quite often, estimating the location of the camera felt a bit like

Related to this is what the purpose(s) might be.

I'd say that is equally important as the location of the camera and getting that precise is even more important than getting the location precise.

When I started adding the heading to already 'located' photos, I noticed that quite a lot had the subject as location, not the camera. So any of those photos should be checked (and maybe marked 'ok' by a 'conoisseur', somehow). I assume that those who added the heading got that point, so they should be ok.

Image deletion warning Image:DirkvdM_Artis-Aqarium_zuid_2.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

As part of the GFDL 1.3 license migration project, I've edited Template:Dvdm to mark any files tagged with it as eligible for relicensing under CC-BY-SA-3.0. I hope you have no objection to this, but if you do, feel free to revert my edit and please see the links above for instructions on how to tag the files individually. Thank you for your contributions, and have a nice day. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 01:43, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, DirkvdM!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

FYI: Used your media file[edit]

This is a courtesy note. One of your media files is featured in a new commercial eBook in Apple’s iBooks store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/dr.-kemps-kids-love-bugs/id497852225?mt=11

I’ve contributed images to Wikipedia for over seven years now (including several POTD and Featured Images) and I designed the WikiSpecies logo. I respect your work here and the CC-BY-SA license we all labor under.

I know commercializing Wikipedia work is tricky and so I’ve taken great pains to follow your CC-BY-SA license requirements. I also plan to donate 10% of my proceeds to the Wikimedia Foundation directly. This is the very first self-published e-book created with Apple’s new tools and sold in the store.

I’ve given your file a credit line in the “Image and Video Credits” section starting at page 24 as required here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License

This compilation features many of the finest Wikipedia media files in their exact form and not as derivative works. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verbatim_copying_under_the_GFDL#Making_verbatim_copies_of_images

If I did alter your work -- such as cutting out an insect part or adding a video sound track -- I shared a Share Alike version of the new media in a DRM-free format and listed the web address in the credits section.

Thank you very much for uploading your work to Wikipedia and releasing it for the world to use in enriching educational formats.
