Hallo Dewet,

Dewet 08:54, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Please link images[edit]

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 23:21, 10 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

License Info[edit]

Hi - thanks for contributing to the commons. Sorry that Image:MartinusVanSchalkwyk.jpg was deleted without notifying you. However, you uploaded it as "public domain / fair use", wich is a contradiction in itself, and fair use images are not allowed on the commons. The image was marked for deletion by someone else for more than two weeks before I deleted it (according to [1], for good reason), you should have been asked for the license when it was marked - I didn't check that, sorry. Also, I was unable to check which projects used the image, because the mediawiki software does not offer a feature to do that (luckyly we have an external too for that now).

The Copyright stuff is tricky sometimes, here are some more things to keep in mind: I also had a look at other images you uploaded - most of them are missing information that is vital to the license, especially source and author. Without that, the license status can not be checked and the tag is no good. About Template:SouthAfricaCopyright: please add a link there to a law or policy page that defines work of the S.A. government as public domain, so people can have a look at the legal stuff if need be. As too reproductions like Image:RandCurrencyR5coinsOldNew.jpg: you can't really license reproductions as your own work, because you do not have any rights to them. Either the 'original is PD, then the image is PD too. Or the original is copyrighted, then the image is non-free too (unless the original is under a free license). For more information about all that, see Commons:Licensing - if you have definite information about the copyright laws in south africa, it would be excelent if you could add them to the section about country specific laws.

Something else: to license you own work, please use CC-by-sa-2.0 or so - this way, it is possible to identify it as self-published work more easily.

Sorry to be picky about this, but the copyright stuff is really important to keep the commons running. -- Duesentrieb 12:44, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I have replied to you on my page. -- Duesentrieb 15:42, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Pictures Capetown[edit]

Hello Dewet. I am from Holland and very interested in pictures about the statue of Maria de la Quellerie and Jan van Riebeeck in Capetown, on Adderley Street. As I saw some beautiful pictures from your hand about Cape Town, maybe it is possible for you to make these pictures and put them on the wikipedia site (or mail torrentmdeq@hotmail.com). Thanks in advance! Qqq1

Photo of Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek[edit]

Dear Dewet, My name is Robert Stock and I am working for a Museum in Berlin. We're searching for a photograph of the huguenot monument in Franschhoek in order to include it in a publication. Do you have the photo from wikicommons in a better solution? (The Huguenot Memorial Museum in Franschoek, South Africa, commemorating the cultural contribution of French Huguenots.) If you do, I would like to know about the possibility for publication. Please enter in contact with me: saltomusik@yahoo.de Best wishes, Robert Stock

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello, Dewet!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
