File:Indoor_Pool_in_Hearst_Castle.JPG[edit]

Good day. I saw you removed Category:Roman Pool (Hearst Castle) from File:Indoor_Pool_in_Hearst_Castle.JPG without explanation nor substituting any other category. As this left the image uncategorized, and the former category from what I could see seemed correct, I reverted the removal, since I saw no reason for it. Mistake, or was there something I missed? Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:05, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. In revamping the Category:Hearst Castle section, I've noticed areas with 60 or more images of the same exact thing for the Category:Roman Pool (Hearst Castle), Category:Neptune Pool (Hearst Castle), Category:Front entry of Casa Grande (Hearst Castle)‎, and Category:Front facade of Casa Grande (Hearst Castle)‎ because they are the main attractions. In this case, there were 60 images of the Southern wall of the Roman Pool, and rather than sorting them first, I removed the low-quality images being under 1MB by removing their categories, not remembering that they'd default to the Uncategorized section. Do you know a better way to manage something like that, such as creating a subcategory called 'Low-Quality Images'? I got an answer this morning from an editor who said we can upload new images to replace them, but it seems we can only do that with new images. If I can get a list of those images, I'd be happy to categorize them. Davidlwinkler (talk) 15:56, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Hm. Well, removing relevant categories from images is not the answer nor appropriate. Some thoughts off the top of my head - Perhaps create pages featuring the best images? "Low quality" seems something of an overstatement - the image is not blurred nor particularly flawed - it is from 2005, and 500k+ was decent resolution and perfectly usable in Wikipedia at the time. Tech improvements have simply allowed us to have even better resolution since. 60 images does seem an overabundance, but long standing practice on Wikimedia Commons is generally that for illustrations of in-topic subjects, too much is better than not enough. Such additional images are seldom deleted unless they have more obvious flaws (eg out of focus, too dark, or so tiny resolution as to be unusable in an article). I'd suggest pages &/or categorization that helps feature the best images, rather than trying to completely "hide" the not-best. Perhaps you can bring this up elsewhere such as the Village Pump for other suggestions. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 04:52, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting speedy deletion[edit]

Hi, when requesting speedy deletion through the Speedy template (e.g. Category:Casa del Sol Fountain (Hearst Castle)), please make sure there are no nowiki tags surrounding it. Otherwise the speedy deletion template will not work. --HyperGaruda (talk) 15:50, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank you. Sorry if you've had to do them manually. Davidlwinkler (talk) 16:12, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, HyperGaruda. I tried without the nowiki tags, and immediately received errors that it might not delete, and that I need to notify the creator of the cat. An editor had suggested I do it with the nowiki tags, and my other cats are being removed efficiently. I'm not sure why your bot isn't working with them, but I think I'm doing it the proper way. Hello, Davidlwinkler!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello, Elisfkc. Thank you for the tip, and the appreciation. I'm not sure how I missed that one, but probably simultaneous editing when the Flickrbot confirmed the copyright. I tried to copy the coding from your User page's User boxes which didn't work as well as I'd hoped, but after clicking yours, typing in my username, and hitting enter; - voila: It showed my total counts. Do you by chance know how to fix the mishap on my User page? Will you please? Happy editing, and thank you for your contributions as well. Davidlwinkler (talk) 03:48, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I had to look up to remember how I did it, but its on User:UploadStatsBot. It may take 24 hours for it to take. --Elisfkc (talk) 14:41, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm stylin now. Elifkc, you're my hero. File:Matthew_Broderick.jpg This probably won't work right the second time either, but thank you! Davidlwinkler (talk) 22:11, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
