Hello, DavidMCEddy!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Rootstrikers logo lg.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Thanks for uploading File:Hadley-wickham2016-02-04.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

On 2016-12-30 I forwarded an email from Stephanie Kelton and she replied confirming that she owns the four Kelton photos I just uploaded and she was granting permission to release them under cc-by-sa. Subj: "Fwd: Re: 1 PM?". I apologize for the cryptic subject, but that should not be grounds for deletion.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

@Eff G.: What's the problem with these?
If you want to delete them over an alleged copyright violation, it would seem that you should also delete many if not all of the photos in Category:Coins of the Philippines and many of the other photos of coins in Wikimedia Commons.
I found those coins among my wife's effects and took those photos in Overland Park, Kansas, USA, 13 January 2016. I do not understand how these can be a copyright violation.
My wife had found those coins in the personal effects of her mother, Bess Felsenberg Wolf, who died in 1977. My wife's brother, Harry Ben Wolf, Jr., had served in the US Marine Corps in the Philippines during World War II. My wife and I believed that my brother-in-law had brought those coins back from WWII and given them to their parents.
Before I took those photographs, I found a relevant Wikipedia article with a blank space for those photos. So I took those photos, posted them to Wikimedia Commons, and linked to them from that article. Since then someone else has uploaded other, similar photos, and replaced mine. Images of other coins of the same vintage but in better condition are now available in Wikimedia Commons. Therefore, these photos are no longer used, except for a study of wear on coins.
If you want to delete these images for lack of use, I have no objection.
However, if you want to delete them over an alleged copyright violation, I want to understand why. Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 13:12, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ani Raven Haines[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you are sure that Ani Raven Haines, whose image you uploaded 10/4/19, identifies as genderqueer or nonbinary? Do you have a source for that? I looked at their Facebook, where they clicked the "female" box (though that might not be accurate!), so I just want to be sure they are not being miscategorized unintentionally. Thanks! Aroundthewayboy (talk) 22:00, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

She uses the words "queer" and "she" to describe "herself". I met her at the 2018 Grassroots Radio Conference (GRC) and again at the 2019 GRC. At the latter, I showed her the Wikipedia article on "Non-binary gender" and asked if she'd like her picture added to that article. She said, "Yes". So I took her picture, uploaded it to Commons and added it to that article while she watched.
This is a person who identifies as a "queer woman" and proudly wears a goatee.
Should we move this discussion to "Talk:Non-binary gender"?
Does Wikipedia have an article for people who identify as "queer" but not necessarily non-binary?
If you do a search for her at kboo.org, you will find a lot of information on her. At GRC 2018 I heard she had served KBOO for many years in some official capacity like volunteer coordinator. At GRC 2019 I heard she no longer serves in that capacity.
DavidMCEddy (talk) 22:34, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for the explanation! That totally satisfies me that she approves of her photo being used that way. I would support moving this discussion to the nonbinary talk page (could you initiate that?), just so that there's a record there that she is happy to have her photo used that way. If not, at least there's a record here. Have a great day. Aroundthewayboy (talk) 19:40, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than copy some of this discussion to the Wikipedia article on w:Non-binary gender, I summarized it in a modification to the description of that photo on Commons. I think someone might more likely look for that kind of information there than in "Talk:Non-binary gender". Thanks for the response. DavidMCEddy (talk) 20:35, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
