First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Categories[edit]

As a general rule, files should not be in both a cat: and a supercat: - e.g. if an image is in Category:Blessing and Category:Water in religion then it shouldn't need to be in Category:Religion (otherwise the supercats: get unusably full). Similarly, Category:Mykonos is already subcatted under Category:Greece. Hope this helps! Man vyi 10:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ευχαριστώ! Περνάω και τις δικές σου λέξεις (σιγά σιγά) στο ελληνικό Βικιλεξικό. Ποιο πρόγραμμα χρησιμοποιείς; (γιατί μου κάνει ένα περίεργο κολπάκι και μου κλείνει με μήνυμα λάθους τον Media Player αφού ακουστεί η λέξη) --Flyax 13:43, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Δεν έχω πρόβλημα να ακούσω τις δικές μου ηχογραφήσεις σε .ogg στο Media Player. Όταν όμως ενσωμάτωσα τις δικές σου στο Βικιλεξικό, ο ΜΡ έκλεινε με μήνυμα λάθους (βέβαια προλαβαίνω να ακούσω τη λέξη). Γι' αυτό σε ρώτησα με ποιο πρόγραμμα κάνεις την ηχογράφηση.

Αν θέλεις, δοκίμασε αυτό: http://shtooka.net/project/en/ Εκεί θα βρείς το Shtooka Recorder. Δηλώνεις, ας πούμε 10 ή 100 λέξεις, τις ηχογραφείς όλες με τη μία και το πρόγραμμα σου δημιουργεί ισάριθμα αρχεία ogg ή flanc, ανάλογα τι έχεις στις προτιμήσεις. Το κακό είναι ότι πρέπει μετά να κάνεις μετονομασία με λατινικούς χαρακτήρες. --Flyax 13:16, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, β was pronounced [b] and in modern greek you pronounce it as [v], η as [è] and now [i]. Studying ancient greek, one teached me 'alfa, beta, gamma, delta, ...my, ny,... tay, ... ' and listening to you I hear 'alfa, veta, γama, θelta, ... mi, ni, ... tav, ...'. You could recite it as it was teached to me, but you recite it in a other way. The letters are written identically, but pronounciation certainly evolved since centuries. You didn't labeled the file as ancient but also not as modern : that's because I asked to be sure. Greek sound-files[edit]

Hey, I see you made a sound file used in the list of numbers on English Wikipedia. The w:en:Modern Greek phonology article has lots of examples, but no sound files. Would you be willing to (over time) record some sound files for the examples in the article? Examples that could be recorded include the North Wind and Sun example at the bottom of the article, and the tables of consonants and vowels, and the examples of sandhi and the letter ν that are given in the paragraphs. Let me know if you want or have time to do this! As a language enthusiast, I would certainly like to hear the sounds said as well as written, and it is worth recording them, because some of the Greek sounds are different in certain ways from the similar English ones (like Greek π and μπ versus English p and b, as well as Greek σ versus English s, for instance).
