First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate category and optionally place the images on topic pages (galleries), or do both (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Siebrand 09:56, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done and thanks for the pretty templates :)--Cronholm144 12:08, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What is it, actually? An Iranian scouting logo? All I can read is "Allahu Akbar" and "Amadh Bash"(?), and I don't know what the second phrase means... AnonMoos 08:09, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

yep I'm making it for the scouting wikiproject--Cronholm144 18:41, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you should actually describe it, in the field provided for the purpose on the upload form. AnonMoos 01:02, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will, I am kinda lazy bout all of the categories--Cronholm144 03:09, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The old and new images represent the same thing in two different way; there's no a better image but two images. Please re-upload your image at a new name (Image:Cylindrical coordinates 2.svg for example, or another) and then I, or you, can restore the Maurogiachero's image. This for don't lose any useful diagram, I hope this is not a problem for you. Thank you. Sorry for my not perfect english. --β16 - (talk) 08:56, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Image (mathematics).svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Astana insignia[edit]

Hi Cronholm144

Thanks for creating your nice images of the insignia of Astana. Great work as always. I've taken the liberty of replacing your license template with the Kazakh PD template. Since these images are created in order to resemble official Kazakh insignia, I feel most comfortable if we adhere to Kazakh law here. Thanks again for creating some very nice images. Tree Of Life Image[edit]

Hi Cronholm, I notice you have made an svg image of the tree of life image I originally created. Good job. Unfortunately you have selected the wrong license when uploading. The original image was published under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.5 license but you have published your variant under the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2. Also I notice you have added conditions e.g. no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. Please change the license to the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.5 license. Thanks. Morgan Leigh 02:18, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is fixed now, if you still have a problem or have one in the future you can just fix it yourself. I don't mind. Sorry for the mistake.--Cronholm144 03:36, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that. I didn't realise that I could change it. I thought it had to be done by the person who uploaded it. Thanks for doing it. Morgan Leigh 10:26, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Last summer, you SVGified all the Baybayin letters. All but Image:Baybayin Wa.PNG because at the time it was a duplicate of Image:Baybayin Ta.PNG due to a mistake from the uploader. If you'd like to finish the SVGification, just feel free :) — Xavier, 11:27, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Baybayin Wa.svg Done, happy someone noticed. You might want to tag it appropriately. Cheers --Cronholm144 00:46, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just have two quick questions about this SVG image you uploaded: first of all, why did you add a border between the former East and West Germany? Is this meant to highlight differences in the economies of the two German regions, or is this just an error? Please explain.

Secondly, just a quick point of clarification: did you use the UN Gini index or the CIA Gini index, or did you just copy the scale from the PNG image?

Thanks in advance for your response! -- Keith Lehwald 15:40, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I used the image below
as the base (I think, memory fuzzy), so a border between east and west is purely by accident or due to a flaw in the original map. I think I just used the PNG. If you need me to fix it I will (or you can if you want).--Cronholm144 00:19, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cronholm144! I am a french journalist working in South Africa and I made an article about the world inequalities and the so bad placement of SA (2nd worst country in the world!). I would like to use this file in my article, what should I do for that? It is a free licence? Shall I put you name? And then, if you wanna, I could then you the link of the article that you could put in the page of "Gini coefficient".

Girih Tiles -- New Images[edit]

Hi Cronholm! I've been going over some of the geometry/tiling articles and I have made more precise versions of the Girih tiles images (retaining the layout and approximate colours). Would you mind if I uploaded them over the existing ones? I don't see the need to have the same pattern twice. You can see a preview here.

Hello, Cronholm144!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:00_Commandant_of_the_Armed_Forces.svg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:00_Commandant_of_the_Armed_Forces.svg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thank you for your work on the image "Central African Federation Coat of Arms". If you have time, I wonder if you could make the image of the British Central Africa Protectorate Coat of Arms. It can be seen on this [1] stamp.

Thanks for uploading File:Holysee-arms.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Holysee-arms.svg) and the above demanded information in your request.
