Hello, Constant314!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, stumbled across a already-made vector version of your drawing, and made the colours and colour gradients match closer to your original. It seems you didn't want the version user:F=... made, because he didn't use colour gradients and the colours were a lot darker. I will not force my recoloured version into the Wikipedia article, but an improved SVG version is still available in case others want it. Nice diagram anyway! Good day Maschen. My original was a jpeg. I didn't realize at that time that jpg was depreciated. Someone (was it you?) replaced it with an svg but did not reproduce the gradients. The gradients, in my opinion, made it look more three dimensional, and so I replaced the svg with a png. My understanding is that there is no preference between png and svg. Not so? Upon further consideration, I like your version better than mine. Please go ahead and replace my png with your svg. Constant314 (talk) 01:49, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The original SVG version without gradients was by User:F=q(E+v^B), I did the recent alteration to lighten the colours and include the gradients. Thanks for replying quickly. Maschen (talk) 22:33, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Using own work elsewhere[edit]

If I upload my own work under my user name can use that same work elsewhere under my own name without attribution to wikimedia? Constant314 (talk) 14:49, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

 • Absolutely. But if you upload it somewhere else first and don't indicate a Commons-appropriate license there, then when you upload to Commons you will need to follow COM:OTRS so we know you are not a different person plagiarizing that other site. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple accounts[edit]

I want to have a second account under my own real name so that I can use my own work elsewhere without attribution (mostly on Quora). To maintain anonymity of my primary account, I do not want to publicly link the two accounts. I realize that clever people may be able to figure it out.

Is this allowed?
Is there a formal procedure?
Is it a bad idea?

Constant314 (talk) 16:46, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Having multiple accounts is allowed as long as they are not abused to evade bans or blocks, to deceive or mislead (for example by participating in a discussion using both accounts to create an illusion of greater support for one's position) or for other nefarious purposes. We generally follow the same principles as English Wikipedia. It is recommended (but not required) to link the accounts using User Alternate Acc. Thanks. Is there a way to link accounts that is not public? Constant314 (talk) 22:14, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing systematic, but I imagine you could send an email to the OTRS people so that a record of the linking that could be verified. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is WikiMedia Commons adequate isolation for original research?[edit]

Please review this discussion and add your opinions, if any. Thanks.Vinyasi (talk) 01:48, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
