velvet underground covers[edit]

hi cnyborg, you' ve set all my images of VU covers on speed deletion request/index...WHY? i think i'm able to photograph my own covers as much as i like. no 2D! i'm not very amused about it. —Hendrike 21:42, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cover art is 2D, even though the album cover itself obviously exists in threedimensional space. Actually, even 3D-objects are protected, see Commons:Licensing#Derivative_Works. You can of course photograph them as much as you like, but you have no right to publish those photos under the GFDL licence. Cnyborg 22:58, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ref. e-post produsent no:Diskusjon:PH_Kongle. Nsaa 11:38, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Considering the similarity in the name of the photographer and your username, it looks as if the license of this photo is fine, but could you please add a line to explain why you have the right to publish Captain Ray's photo under the PD-license? That could save you from the hassle of a deletion request later if someone doesn't make the connection. Cnyborg 00:21, 19 August 2006 (U

My father is now deceased, (Lt. Colonel Claxton Ray, US Army Corps of Engineers) I own all the negatives via inheritance and some of his War photography is excellent. What license should I use, I thought just having my photographic archive and collection information would let people know it is part of the collection which is copyrighted as well. I have more to scan and put up, what should I use? WayneRay 14:44, 19 August 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
The PD-license is great, of course, and you clearly have the right to upload it under that license. If you want to make sure he is credited, you could license it under CC-BY-SA, or preferably under a dual GFDL/CC-BY-SA license. Cnyborg 18:03, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What does that mean? 70.53.109.125 18:40, 19 August 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
Take a look at Commons:Licensing for more information, but basically, by licensing something as PD, you give up all rights to the work. Anyone can do anything with it, without even having to crediting the author. If you, however, would like to ensure that your father is credited as the photographer, you can use the license CC-BY-SA and specify how they should be credited. As for the notice I asked for in the first place, I've added it to the image page since you've confirmed that the photographer was indeed your father. The photo is really good, and I hope to see more uloads from the collection. Cnyborg 20:25, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did that and it also shows up on the CC page, is that necessary, isnt that a duplicate thing? There are countless tons of images there , how would one use that section. Thakns for your help i have uploaded more and re written the article [ages with more relevent information WayneRay 23:14, 20 August 2006 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Taken care of. My rule of thumb as far as images like these go...It's been 100% true in the past:

Cartoon screenshot = copyright violation. You may want to go ahead and just risk putting the {{Copyvio}} tag on them. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 21:36, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you think so. I've taken a bit of flak over that earlier, but I haven't actually been wrong so far, so... Thanks. Cnyborg 22:43, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand. When you upload files, this screenshot copyright is not mentionned in the ones u can choose. And this came from english wikipedia. What the problem ? Can't YOU change the copyright and make it good once uploaded. That's my first one, I don't know how to do. I need a help. Tx for helping.User talk:Bleu
Fair use-images are not permitted on Commons. Please read Commons:Licensing, which should give you an overview of license matters. Cnyborg 16:01, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
you mean Fair use-images is permitted for english wikipedia and only for them ? Where do they store their image ? isn't it on wikimedia commons ? User talk:Bleu
Man, what a pity is all this, for a miserable picture already used in english wikipedia. User talk:Bleu
Fair use is dependent on other content; it's acceptable when illustrating an article. Commons has no articles, so fair use is simply not possible here. Some other Wikimedia projects accept fair use, but not all. Cnyborg 18:29, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
