Taking a break for some MELLOW time[edit]

I'm taking a break from recent drama for some COM:MELLOW time.

I'll defer to the judgment of other admins with regards to admin actions.

Please feel free to change what you wish on prior admin actions — no worries, either way. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 05:31, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question at deletion request[edit]

Hey, just in case you missed it, I responded to your comment at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Hylda and Meow bikini censored.png and would appreciate a reply. --Conti| 21:51, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. :) ✓ Done. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 03:53, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Hankey images[edit]

Cirt, I am surprised to discover that you have uploaded more images of Mr. Hankey following the previous discussion about this. Would you be good enough to ask for them to be deleted? I can certainly do it if you wish, but I think it would be much less troublesome if you did it yourself. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:47, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm, this must've been awhile ago. Which ones are you referring to specifically? -- Cirt (talk) 22:54, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I believe everything in Category:Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo needs to go. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 23:17, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. Why do you think so, Delicious carbuncle? -- Cirt (talk) 23:18, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we could be more specific? Let's talk about them individually, and that way it'd be easier for me to understand your concerns? -- Cirt (talk) 23:28, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think we've already covered this in the previous discussion. The issues are the same. I don't see any need to belabour this - I thought I would give you the chance to delete these yourself, but if you don't wish to, I will take it up somewhere else. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 23:38, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I thought these that are currently in the category were less similar to the character in question, and more original work by their creators, you see? -- Cirt (talk) 00:51, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you![edit]

Hi Cirt. Glad to see you back around. Hope you had a good relaxing break.

Cirt, I am confused by your closure of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Vladimir Putin caricature - Putin Rearmament Plan - by FreedomHouse.jpg. You closed it with the statement "uploader requested deletion of an unused file". You were the uploader of the image, but there is no policy that allows uploaders to have unused images deleted. Also, I thought that DRs were typically left open for a week? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 14:51, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Recently uploaded files may be deleted in this way - though that does not apply here of course. --Herby talk thyme 14:54, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Understood, Herby, thank you for this clarification. I will keep that in mind in the future. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 14:56, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cirt, would you mind reclosing the DR to show that you deleted the file because it was a copyright violation facilitated by Flickrwashing? And perhaps you could add the account(s) for that Flickr user to the blacklist? Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 15:06, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 15:14, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On a couple of occasions you've written on my talk page letting me know of some deletion requests or discussions of interest. FUCK!!!!![edit]

Hi again, apologies in advance for the title =) Category:Fuck (film), is this type of categorizing kosher here on Commons? I know on WP it is not per WP:OCAT etc. Browsing the first two pages of Category:Films of the United States I could only find a single film category containing actors/staff. jonkerz ♠talk 04:08, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's fine, it's done for other things like Television show production staff, quite a bit, actually. -- Cirt (talk) 06:06, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See for example, Category:Star Trek: The Next Generation. -- Cirt (talk) 06:08, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, well then. It clutters both staff and film categories. I may challenge it at CFD if it hasn't been already, but it will have to wait.. maybe forever, like so many other things in life, heh. jonkerz ♠talk 20:39, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Transferring images from another project[edit]

What's up with this transfer? File:Plympton BW.jpg. Among other things, you tagged it with the wrong license. Normally I would template a user with Template:How to transfer, but you are an admin with 57,000 edits? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:14, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. Thank you for the helpful changes you've made to the image page. Thank you, also, for the polite way in which you've imparted this advice to me. I appreciate it, -- Cirt (talk) 02:32, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

re Categories[edit]

It makes it harder to find relevant photos (actors' photos can be found easily by other means). But if readers find it useful, why not? Commons is not WP after all, and non-English speakers may find it helpful since they cannot find photos as easily by browsing ENWP. So.. no CFD =) What I initially objected to was the link from the Fuck article, because linking Commons should mean that there is content about the film to be found here, now readers will only find photos of staff/interviewees not directly related to the article, and these can all be found by browsing ENWP anyway. A Commons page with captioned portraits of the staff/interviewees would be very nice though, and as a bonus, editors like me couldn't complain about over categorization =) jonkerz ♠talk 05:48, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done, very good suggestion, thank you! I've gone ahead and created such a page, at Fuck (film). -- Cirt (talk) 20:12, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

very very long time no speak[edit]

I am a bit intrigued as to where a retrograde spelling change for Adisucipto airport comes from? Do you speak Indonesian? Have you been there recently? I must say I am quite open to some quaint explanation, but really, I havent seen that spelling for that location since I first visited in 1985... sats (talk) 08:54, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies, I see the change actuyally involves User:Humboldt - I have left a message... sats (talk) 09:11, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indonesian sign makers and name custodians are particularly frustrating - Humboldt has simply redirected because the local airport signs carry old spelling, but all international flight information is in new spelling. Dumb and inconsistent. Indonesian. bah. sats (talk) 09:26, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I think the redirect should be in the other direction - as the most likely search will be from an outsider and if you google it the sucipto spelling is the logical one, but as humboldt so bravely asserts from his pointing to the old spelling and usage, it is in my mind an inconsistency which should default to the modern spelling and outsiders usage, not local. Maybe to sort that out for all indonesian images/files on commons in that frame of mind, I would need another lifetime of editing... sats (talk) 04:38, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Bradley Manning has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hiya!![edit]

Hiya Cirt: I saw your comment about "astute analysis" on the Commons:Deletion_requests/2013/10/09. Is it ok to just agree with nominator?? It was suggested to me that I work on these deletion requests by an admin who said there are too few people doing this and they needed help. I decided until I understand all the fine points to limit myself to the easy ones: family and personal snaps, ugly penii, and so on. Should I be more verbose, or is it ok to just agree with the nominator and not add more comment? Thank you for your help! I hope to do better always in Wiki. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:25, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I will be more verbose in the future, sorry but when Jim (woodward talk to him) asked me to start doing it, the samples he gave were most brief. I spent some time yesterday (see my user page) making up some standard messages to send to people whose images I propose for deletion, I guess I shall make some standard ones for the deletion pages too. I did add the tag for sexually related deletion request, but of course that doesn't show on the main deletions request page! Thanks for your suggestions to make longer statements. I wish there was some page of suggestions, truly... many rules & 'be bold' and it still seems like I can't do anything right! Thanks for the info! Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Streisand Estate.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

File:Wikileaks logo.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Leipzig Award 2003.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

cover[edit]

I suspect that cover [6] also is copyrightable. it usually takes something like the cover of the Beatles white album to be inelibible. however, i am not an expert, and one of my files was just deleted for being a copyvio (a company logo that was apparently too complex)Mercurywoodrose (talk) 23:51, 12 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This one: [7] is the original file i was proposing deletion of. however, i didnt delete it, just proposed it. if i was in error, you (or i) can request a review.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:53, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Jmabel, what do you think of this one? Can it be uploaded to Commons? -- Cirt (talk) 03:37, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would think so, but it's beginning to push into slightly more questionable territory because it is not just a typographical font. I'd take that question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright if you really want someone with more expertise to weigh in. - Jmabel ! talk 04:43, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, nevermind about that particular one, thanks though. -- Cirt (talk) 11:51, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Video contest[edit]

Hi Cirt! I'm one of the organizers of the video contest Videos für Wikipedia-Artikel in the German Wikipedia which aims at including more videos into Wikipedia articles. The topic of our contest is "Digital Society". I discovered that your video „Message to Scientology“ is included in the German article called Anonymous (Kollektiv). Therefor I want to invite you to participate with this video in the contest. The procedure is very easy: You would just have to add the template {{Video für Wikipedia-Artikel 2014}}. Obviously, if you have other video material consistent with the topic "Digital Society", you are wellcome to participate with it as well. --NSm (VWA) (talk)

Okay I'll think about maybe a different video. Thank you, -- Cirt (talk) 13:45, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've added {{Video für Wikipedia-Artikel 2014}} to File:The Impact of Wikipedia Adrianne Wadewitz.webm. -- Cirt (talk) 16:05, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You Cirt! It's a good one, I think -- NSm (VWA) (talk)
Most welcome, -- Cirt (talk) 23:56, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Use of profanity on Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Could a user get block for typing out profane words? 174.91.69.244 20:49, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is rarely done, even in bad cases. See Commons:Blocking policy. --Leyo 21:27, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category moves[edit]

Please don't copy-paste category wikitext to move a page, as you did when you moved Category:Michael Davis to Category:Michael E. Davis. If you're going to move categories/pages, then please request filemover rights so that you can move the category/file/page using the right tool rather than copy-paste. Thanks. ✓ Done, I've fixed it, thanks. -- Cirt (talk) 22:00, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The wording style choice above kinda feels like w:Wikipedia:Don't template the regulars. -- Cirt (talk) 22:03, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
