First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Finn Rindahl 19:41, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some nice images[edit]

Good to see some northern UK stuff - cheers --Herby talk thyme 15:54, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ditto . I'll see what happens to those two but your pavement one is qi I think too. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:08, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Would have been my next message to you :) QIs sit there for 48 hours but I doubt anyone will object to those two and the one above I wouldn't hesitate to put in if you want to (I'll happily do it otherwise).
QI - quality is really an "absolute" issue. Sharp, correctly exposed, well composed, of some use, not tilted (bad for me!) etc etc. I now try and set myself that as a standard for my uploads as it makes me more disciplined.
FP - pretty much the same as en wp but not! It amazes me the stuff that succeeds here and dies on en & vice versa. However I will happily nom it if you don't want too. I think the standards are/should be similar but the outcomes sure vary. Equally there is no requirement to be on a wiki page anywhere tho the images should be of "EV". You know where I am if you want me. BTW check out "annotation" - it is useful - example. It will accept wiki links too. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:09, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Might be worth considering the opposes on en wp - some of the folk are active here too. Still think it is worth a shot. In passing have you got a remote release cable for you sony? I got one very cheap the other day - not for everyday use but good for casual use. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:23, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK - I'll leave FP/QI to you to deal with.
Cable release - useful if you are taking shots at low light on a tripod say - no movement of the camera then. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 16:44, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
