Foreign railway wagons in the UK

Hi, I note a lot of recent edits like this. This is categorizing the wagons as German on the basis of their UIC number. Do you know if these wagons (many of them china clay tankers) are working through the Channel Tunnel into Europe? If they're heading to Dollands Moor, that's my assumption.

Some of your similar edits were on steel coil carriers coming out of South Wales. Many of these (I've not checked the images here) are working between South Wales steelworks and the Midlands, for UK car production. Now with GB's chaotically privatised railway operations, I'm sure that these are (as their UIC numbers indicate) German or Dutch owned. But are they still best as Category:Railway wagons of the Netherlands by UIC wagon number? Or should we be looking for something more descriptive, under Category:Foreign railway wagons in the United Kingdom? Andy Dingley (talk) 17:17, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi,

I agree with your viewpoint, and have therefore mostly categorized the images in the Category:Foreign railway wagons in the United Kingdom. This is a sub-category of the Category:Railway wagons of the United Kingdom (it already was, I did not change this).

So the pictures are eventually connected to the Railway wagons of the United Kingdom, albeit via an additional sub-category (instead of directly in the main category gallery).

Another option (which I also use) is additionally classifying them by owner or leasing company. But since many of the companies operate both in the UK and mainland Europe (Nacco, Touax, VTG) this creates a huge category where it may become unclear which wagons can operate in the UK and which are purely continental wagons.
