Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Why no "File Links"?

Question:

Why is there no file links to my images on wikicommons that I have already added into the gallery of related articles in wikipedia? Bthomeldh (talk) 21:11, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Answer (Summarised from many inputs from helpful folks from both Wikicommons and Wikipedia):

Image from Commons added into Wikipedia end up having 2 separate pages in Commons and in Wikipedia and are not related to one another. The Commons File Links only shows links on Commons itself. For example, compare these two:

• File:United States Wind Resources and Transmission Lines map.jpg on Commons
• File:United States Wind Resources and Transmission Lines map.jpg on the English Wikipedia

To show uses across all projects, try the "check usage" tab instead.

This button locates all articles and other pages using this image on every Wikimedia Foundation project (wikipedias, wikibooks etc).

When you look at an image page, there should be a tab saying "check usage" at the top of the page, on the same row as the "edit", "history", "watch" and other such tabs. If you're using the new "Vector" skin (which you can enable by clicking "Try Beta" at the top of the page), the check usage link will be hidden in the drop-down menu next to the search box. If you really don't see any such tab, one or more of the following might be the problem:

• You have JavaScript disabled (or your browser does not support it).
• You've enabled the "Remove Image Tools" gadget in your preferences (under "Gadgets" → "Maintenance tools"). Just uncheck it.
• You're using a skin other than MonoBook, Modern or Vector. The extra tabs do not currently work in other skins.

If you'd rather not to change your Commons skin or disable JavaScript just to see the extra tabs, you can go to the CheckUsage page directly and just enter the file name there. I'd suggest bookmarking it for later use. Bthomeldh (talk) 21:40, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
