First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

Hello, Brimz!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks[edit]

I actually appreciate your words and the tone in which they are said :)

I do realise there are issues with the template (& I am aware of the parameter). In this case (as most of the others) what I am deleting is the only contribution - mostly folk realise very quickly without further intervention in practice. It is very rare indeed to delete anything out of scope from an established user (I certainly would not template that). However on a multi lingual project I have no idea usually of the language to use. Time is also an issue - the built in gadget does not allow for the parameter with that template - maybe it should and I'll see if I can find someone who might help with that I guess. I hope that helps your understanding too. Regards --Herby talk thyme 09:06, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For your info - here, hopefully it will get done. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:26, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Logo Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 English | Nederlands | +/−
Dear Brimz,

We've already thanked you for your contribution to the Wiki Loves monuments photo contest. But with a contest, there are prizes to win!

The award ceremony will be held in Utrecht on Saturday the 5th of November, at the end of the Dutch Wikimedia Conference at Media Plaza, held the same day. Media Plaza is located next to the Central Station in Utrecht, in the middle of the shopping mall.
Admittance is free from 3pm onwards, just in time to catch the last few presentations at the WCN. Off course you can join us for the full day conference as well and enjoy a day full of information on wiki's and cultural heritage. After the ceremony, our location sponsor generously offers a free drink to everyone!

Remember: in order to make a chance to win, you need a confirmed e-mail address added to your Commons settings.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team and the Dutch Wikimedia Conference team

Wiki Loves Monuments NL[edit]

Beste Brimz,

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Trijnsteltalk 22:26, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A cookie for you![edit]

File:Burgas flag.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Renaming of files[edit]

Marking as possible copyvio ???[edit]

Brimz, ik stel voor dat je er EERST J. Lunau over aanspreekt. Lotje (talk) 08:39, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nee. Copyright is copyright, daar gaan we niet moeilijk over doen en mensen over aanspreken. Dat dient direct verwijderd te worden. Dank. Brimz (talk) 08:40, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Please let us discuss in English, I don't speak Dutch. I removed your speed deletion request, because I assume, there is no copyright violation (https://www.google.com/intl/en/help/terms_maps.html). If you, Brimz, think, there is, please use Template:Delete and explain! --J. Lunau (talk) 11:30, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Any picture of Google Maps is protected by Copyright and is marked as such at the bottom of each Google Maps page. To my opinion, that is so clear, one cannot discuss that. I put back the speedy deletion template. If you feel that might not be appropriate, please use the Template:Delete. Thanks. Brimz (talk) 12:51, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
