First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Bermicourt!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Use of existing Wikimedia playing card images e.g. File:Rosamond's Bower Patience.png[edit]

I am creating images using graphics software to illustrate how patience or solitaire games are played e.g. File:Rosamond's Bower Patience.png. However the actual playing card images are taken from Category:SVG playing cards 4 on Wikimedia Commons. Under "Source" I have described them as "Own work" because I produced the actual graphic, but added the words "The card images are from "Category:SVG playing cards 4" here on Wikimedia Commons." Is that acceptable or is there another, preferred, way of indicating the source of the actual playing card images? Bermicourt (talk) 14:43, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other ways to show such origins are the templates Own based, Own using, and maybe in this case probably Attrib/Attribs. Less suited is Derived from because it is not a derivation.
IMHO your solution is good and acceptable, the link to the category summarizes the use of 14 cards where an Attribs table of all these cards seems not helpful.
Have you ever thought of creating an SVG image when you used SVG card images? It is kind of downgrading when you convert the SVG images to a PNG image. -- sarang사랑 08:25, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please use a tool[edit]

Dear Bermicourt, could you use the Commonshelper tool in the future to transfer images from local Wikipedias to Commons? You do never ever add a link to the original image or the original uploader's userpage. The tool does this. Please get a TUSC-account and use the tool. Thank you. Thanks for uploading File:Streckennetz_Sachsen_1902.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading file:Dachmarke Rhoen.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:file:Dachmarke Rhoen.png) and the above demanded information in your request.

99561 near Oschatz Sudbf (Germany) 06Jul06.jpg which you uploaded has been tagged with OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the Volunteer Response Team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the Volunteer Response Team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org now. Please quote the file name ("99561 near Oschatz Sudbf (Germany) 06Jul06.jpg") in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the VRT noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up or contact a VRT member directly.

Kategorien[edit]

Hallo Bermicourt, kategorisiere doch bitte etwas sinnvoller. Beispielsweise sind bei File:Lauenburg (kleine) 01.jpg Category:Buildings in Germany by city und Category:Europa einfach nur Unsinn, der anderen Usern nun unnötige Arbeit beim Aufräumen machen wird. Danke. -- Ies (talk) 18:54, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Portal_Tirol.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Altenburg pattern[edit]

The Altenburg pattern is copyrighted by ASS Altenburger. The only other company that produces this pattern is KZWP-Trefl of Krakow which does so by license though I think they have stopped recently. I advise you to delete images of them with the exception of the packaging which I think is allowed.--Countakeshi (talk) 09:02, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'll delete them all. Bermicourt (talk) 19:41, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete deletion nomination[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you emptied Category:Playing cards by card game and then tagged it for deletion without completing the process. Could you please complete the full deletion request process, and also explain why that category was emptied. As an example of my concern, Category:Magic: The Gathering cards was removed from that category but no replacement was added. Mindmatrix 23:34, 15 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bermicourt. I noticed that you've made more malformed deletion requests. Here, Delete is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the Delete template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:56, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G.: thanks for helping me out. I'm trying to clean up the categories in the area of card games and playing cards which have become a bit of a mess. I'm quite used to deleting pages on English Wikipedia but, if I'm honest, I don't find the process here on Commons easy to decipher, even having read the policy pages. Even finding the process isn't easy and then the policy seems to be written more from an administrator's perspective rather than that of an editor with little or no experience of the process. Anyway I've created the subpages and the error messages on the category pages has gone. Is there anything else I need to do? Bermicourt (talk) 11:22, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
