First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Virgil-Mosaic-Tunesia.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. You are crippling image files![edit]

Hi,

please do not try to add saturation to images, as you have done in Image:2003-10-11 tanner moor 10.JPG. And do not scale images up, as you have done in Image:Platygonus-skeleton.jpg. Thanks. --Head 10:49, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your note on my talk page User talk:Bejnar. Yes, it is undoubtedly true that I understand less about images than you. What can I read that will allow me to understand better what kinds of modifications I may make to images that will not "cripple" them? I was trying to make the Tanner Moor images better looking. They looked a wee tad washed out. What did I actually do? I did like the resulting image as displayed in the wikipedia article, more than the one in the German article. Can I get the same result with commands in the image display protocol? In other cases I have removed, using Paint Pro, extraneous lines, people, etc. I have used the remove fade function on old map and old engraving scans. Any help would be appreciated. --70.57.246.220 00:53, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion (and I guess most Wikipedians share it), images such as the one of the Tanner Moor should document a real thing. I think the original image was giving a better idea of how it looks like there than your version. I showed your manipulated image to people in the German chat room, and most shared my opinion, some noted that yours looks like an LSD trip. ;)
There are some situations where digital editing can enhance the representation of something real, for example removing the red-eye effect or creating panoramic photography. I'm not an expert either, so I can't tell you exactly how to do such stuff, but I guess it's quite easy to find tutorials for that. Images that have extreme problems (e.g. much too dark, lots of noise, people standing in the way etc.) can be enhanced by people with talent in this. But the one that you modified was not that bad. And what's most important: when you modify an image, SAY that you did so on the image description page, e.g. 'removed red eyes', 'cropped version', or 'modified colors'. --Head 11:40, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Smenkhkare-wood.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Delete While in the United States any such museum claim is invalid under Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.. It appears that the issue is unsettled in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. --Bejnar 19:44, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bejnar!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

A file uploaded by you is under deletion request[edit]

A file (or files) you uploaded from the Remote Sensing Tutorial from NASA Goddard Space Center has been tagged for deletion since that tutorial acknowledges that not all of the used images are actually NASA. (See here the overview of the tutorial). The group deletion request is here. Comments would be welcomed.--Garrondo (talk) 11:48, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
