Pay attention to copyright
File:Lee Weiner LinkedIn Profile August 18 2018.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Jess Wade[edit]

Hello, File:Jess Wade - 2017.jpg was previously nominated for deletion and was kept, along with the cropped version. Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Jess_Wade_-_2017.jpg. Thank you. // sikander { talk } 🦖 15:29, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know - I had not noticed the previous discussion before my nomination, although it looks like a procedural keep based on the nominator. But if permission can be sent from the creator, that should clear this up? Thanks again, Beccaynr (talk) 17:58, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You should definitely nominate this image for deletion again, so the matter can be settled on the facts rather than being closed procedurally. Certainly in her early editing career, Jess Wade had a spectacularly poor understanding of copyright law and Wikipedia's requirements for free licensing. This is no sleight on her, many novices struggle with the concepts. Given the circumstances, I would say it is highly likely that Wade mistakenly believed that because she is the subject of the photo, she had the right to release it to the WMF. At the very least, for this photograph to be legally hosted here, there needs to be a clear and explicit statement from Wade that she was legally entitled to release it to Commons, having properly obtained the required releases. I am pretty sure she either won't say anything or won't understand the question, in which case, to uphold the precautionary principle, the image must be deleted. It probably won't be, but that probably won't be because anyone here has been satisfied it is a legal upload. But if you don't try you won't know. FYI, I have left Jess a note asking if she has the required permissions that would make this image legal to host on Commons. Click To Go (talk) 09:35, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Click To Go, I think an informal approach is a nice way to proceed for now. And I have certainly had and continue to have my own learning curve with copyright and Wikipedia's requirements. Previously, Explicit provided helpful administrative guidance to me on another issue, so I am pinging them so they can be aware of this and the corresponding discussion at the Commons Administrators' Noticeboard. Personally, I feel that I need to be realistic about my capacity to create an effective Deletion Request discussion, particularly from an expertise standpoint, but also because I'm not sure how available I will be to participate over the next few weeks. Also, sikander, I am not particularly tech-savvy, but I am wondering how you extracted the higher-resolution image that was uploaded to Commons from the lower-res image published at the wikimedia blog. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 14:39, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The photo on the blog has image source URL as https://diff.wikimedia.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/17_350-icl-jwade-024.jpg?w=580&resize=580%2C395 and without the width and resize URL parameters you can access the HQ version of the photo at https://diff.wikimedia.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/17_350-icl-jwade-024.jpg // sikander { talk } 🦖 14:57, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the explanation! Beccaynr (talk) 15:23, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
