Digitoxin.svg[edit]

There appears to be an error in the stereochemistry of Image:Digitoxin.svg. Please see Image:Digitoxin.png. Thanks. Edgar181 13:46, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Where exactly do you think there is an error? --Ayacop 15:22, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The stereocenter where the butenolide is attached is inverted. Edgar181
Ah ok. --Ayacop 08:49, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Strukturen[edit]

Du fragtest, ob Corina was taugt.

--Ayacop 14:34, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank inkscape's 'trace bitmap' option! I couldn't do this free-hand... --Ayacop (talk) 15:18, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have used inkscapes 'trace bitmap' option and most of those look like I painted with my elbows or even worse, wrestled my brother to submission and used those elbows (a fantasy since he was bigger and stronger than me from three years old onward). The compliment still stands. No option to not get one. -- carol (talk) 15:27, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

question, opportunity to address problems[edit]

I love the Blanco images and I love that they are here and my appreciation for the original uploading of them and the thoughtful naming of them is unending so far. I see them often as I am working as far away from the ToL people as I can get and still "touch their stuff".

Three or four years later, the thoughtful naming of the original upload of the Blanco images withstands time and works well with the other 3 million images that reside here which I think no one could imagine three or four years later.

There was a day when I wanted to move those images from where they are in a subcategory from your user page and into a real category for the artist. Can there be a truce or a non-discussion of categories vs galleries between me and you and I get to ask questions from what is kind of an upload hero of mine -- you, if you are the same person as then? -- carol (talk) 08:22, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All the files from Category:Ayacop/Blanco can of course be moved into Category:Flora de Filipinas or Francisco Manuel Blanco, Flora de Filipinas if that's the meaning of your request. I never had the time for it so please go ahead. --Ayacop (talk) 13:51, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Siebot moves things now, so it is really very easy. I used that functionality to clean up some interesting starts to categorization here that had been abandoned before people got thru the B and into the C's of the subject matter. I kind of laugh even now because it had the appearance of something that I might have attempted. They really had been abandoned, I think. But this bunch of images really made me stop because it is in your personal space and thank you very much for the ease of getting the go ahead to move them. I should type a smiley here, but would rather just mention it.... -- carol (talk) 13:57, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

german wikipedia[edit]

I am having a problem with some of the information that is on German wikipedia and you were the last person to edit the page, so here I am to explain the problem.

It is in the article for Die Korbblütler (Asteraceae oder Compositae). In the list of "Unterfamilien" there is Gymnarrhenoideae and also Gochnatioideae which, unless I can find a different list include the same genera, the difference being that one has a tribe and the other doesn't.

I also found a different problem: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Linkliste/Acanthocalyx <-- in two families. I am unable to read german enough to know if that is how it should be.

And then something funny, the Plant people at English wikipedia consider Die Korbblütler (Asteraceae oder Compositae) to be an easy family when compared to the others. -- carol (talk) 10:33, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have copied your request to this place. --Ayacop (talk) 10:42, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, eh, thanks? -- carol (talk) 10:47, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We'll see if they find a solution. I wouldn't know about both subjects. --Ayacop (talk) 11:01, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK. As far as I understand, you're right. Both the Asteraceae article and the categories here have superfluous taxa, esp. those not according to APG II. This also applies to Acanthocalyx. --Ayacop (talk) 18:31, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
German wikipedia seems to use something that is half like APG and half like Cronquist and I have been using them for Strasburger. Also, I am becoming convinced that most taxa is superfluous by nature....
Not exactly. The German language WP is committed to APG II, and usually, they do a decent job with this. However, there are always people both not knowing about the commitment and working from older literature, as en-WP would have too I guess, so it's a continuing problem.
As to taxa, heh, I have an opinion on that too, after perusing a few of the molecular taxonomist articles. I have written a bit on Lactuca in de-WP and it's merely gene pools centered around the most (commercially) interesting species. The problem is the multidimensionality of data, and until tools like http://www.splitstree.org/ are commonly used we won't see any improvements in the interpretation of it.
Thanks for the help looking into this. -- carol (talk) 20:04, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for bringing it to attention! --Ayacop (talk) 08:02, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Eek! Java! That screenshot seems to be a combination of many things I dislike or am not so good with. The pretty tree picture is nice, but I really like the "what links here". Have you ever seen that image of what they think the galaxy Milky Way looks like that has a little arrow pointing to one place in it that says "You Are Here".... I have been using http://www.uniprot.org/taxonomy/ and then looking to see where others have put the same stuff at. To me, if the Category trees exist here through the genus at least, then images will be put there via the upload softwares that suggest categories if they exist. I get more enthusiastic with the task when I encounter differing circumscriptions in the three trees I am looking at. Then when the template works to put them all in the places that those few sources tell me they should go -- it is one kind of a nice feeling. There is more of a challenge here also than any other site due to the shared names.
Long ago, I was able to convince my Sun volunteer to work with python and he still managed to write python that was impossible for me to read, although I haven't tried lately.
For today, thank you for this little break :) -- carol (talk) 11:29, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Toxiferine.svg[edit]

Hi Ayacop, I have marked Image:Toxiferin.svg with {{Disputed chem}} because there is a hydroxyl group missing from one side-chain and the structure does not show the stereochemistry at two positions in the 8-membered ring. Compare with Image:Toxiferine I.png. If you would like to fix the image, please just removed the tag. Thank you. Edgar181 (talk) 11:43, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I won't. My bkchem doesn't produce wedged hatches, anymore, and formulas without them have been disputed by people. --Ayacop (talk) 16:01, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, it's done, and thanks for your part of the work. --Ayacop (talk) 07:22, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, it looks like the talk page patrollers got to it first. I will be sorry and no longer involved (I think) if there comes a day that I have no ideas of my own and am reduced to patrolling talk pages in place of personal accomplishment.
I should like to end this with how beautiful and useful those images are; that was a great upload which also unfortunately has the appearance of being a magnet for much abuse. The unfortunate should be for others, and this is what I think. -- carol (talk) 17:35, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just been admiring the Flora de Filipinas images - a task that called for massive dedication from the artists and from you!! I've included Blanco's work in the WP "List of florilegia and botanical codices". Do you know which artist/s created the paintings? I can't find a mention of them anywhere. ciao Rotational (talk) 11:13, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect it would be like finding the Olan Mills photographer who took a particular family portrait in the recent history of United States photography. I "heard" (I did not read the actual contract) that if a person became a photographer for that corporation or others similar which provided the same services they lost their name as a photographer and right to produce photographs with their name during the employment and for ten years after the employment was terminated. Skill seems to require actual confidence while business seems to require that confidence not be present or be against the skill. Evolution of the species either halted at this point of low or no confidence or if I am wrong about the Blanco artists, devolved since then. -- carol (talk) 14:23, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I have finished my little rant about the constant display that corporate policy has little confidence in itself, there is often a text in the left corner of some of the images I work on. The text that is on the current image is "R. Garcia B." -- carol (talk) 14:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That would be Regino Garcia y Basa. There were also Lorenzo Guerrero, Fabian Domingo, C.Arguelles, J.Garcia, Rosendo Garcia, Felix Martinez (see). Wish there was more information.....ciao Rotational (talk) 06:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC) Could you give me the names of a few of the plates done by Regino Garcia y Basa? - I've downloaded about twenty, but no luck!! Incidentally Image:Archidendron scutiferum Blanco2.447.jpg should be Mimosa scutifera. ciao Rotational (talk) 07:32, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No sorry. Legumes have the best taxonomic coverage at ildis.org. You can see there that the name was changed 1981 by Nielsen to Archidendron scutiferum (Blanco) I.C. Nielsen. The reference is Nielsen, I. & al. (1984) Opera Botanica 76: 1-120. The genus Archidendron (Leg.-Mimos.). You may assume I have used online taxonomic databases with other plant families too. But please feel free to point out errors that you find. --Ayacop (talk) 17:13, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this was not just another awesome upload. I have been impressed, relieved and grateful for the research that went into finding the names of the images. Not often impressed, relieved and grateful -- more like always while working with them. -- carol (talk) 18:03, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good heavens!! this is the same as this? ciao Rotational (talk) 10:23, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm at a loss. Neither ildis nor tropicos knows about Pithecolobium lobatum nor about P. montanum. There goes the superiority of the online reference! We would need professional help now. --Ayacop (talk) 15:26, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had a problem when trying to work through Pavetta membranacea and what that image should be called. Upon upload it had been named Pavetta membranacea but it was located to a gallery called Pavetta angustifolia and MBG made no mention of either name. I had to fall back to The Philippine Journal of Science from 1907 and something else that said that Pavetta angustifolia was native to Brazil.
Another problem that I have is in knowing myself and assuming that I am not the only person with these problems/qualities. I really attempt to be accurate and honest and thorough and all of those things that are supposed to make reliable information. However, sometimes I work too long and beyond when I am too tired to be reliable -- even when there is not a deadline which is imposed on me. Sometimes I just say "Screw it" and adopt a solution to a problem so that I can move on to something more interesting or whatever reason. I tend to see these problems I have in all of the online collections of the same information. I see honest mistakes and errors of frustration and perhaps a few which are motivated by deadlines in schedules. -- carol (talk) 18:16, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
