First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

Like I wrote it was made from scratch by me using MS-PAINT only. Purpose was to show how the S-trains, Metro, Re-train (and to som extends the local trains) interacts in the Copenhagen Metropolitan Area Awayanoder (talk) 17:00, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is just a photo of a common kind of seagull - "Larus Argentatus" in latin. It has yellow legs, but not it's chicken. I do not belive that Larus Argentatus Ossimus (yellow legged L.A's) is a spiecie of it's own - just a colour variant. (And we studied theese two birds for more then an hour waiting for the car ferry Rostock,Germany to Trelleborg, Sweden. Early November 2007.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Concerning Berlin. Showing one U-Bahn station above ground and an S-bahn station in tunnel, prooves that earlier writer of Berlin local trains have done wrong trying to explain U-bahn as "Tunnelbana" (=Underground) and S-bahn beeing "the pendulum-trains" of Berlin. This is taking Stockholm as the main point of the world , aand comparing other cities from how things work i Stockholm, I call it "stockholmazing". Wikipedia shall thow take an global point of view. And there are very few diffrencies between U-Bahn and S-Bahn in Berlin - both uses tunnels - and both do not, the trains and averidge station distances are very much the same. (During the GDR-era the S-bahn was runned by GDR and U-bahn was runned by the west. But that does not show anymore). This has really became a problem in swedish wikipedia - also the train system of Copenhagen were "Stockholmized" - but no longer. But I don't know how many cities that is written in "point of comparing with Stockholm - view" in swedish wikipedia.

This was only used in a swedish discussion page concerning Copenhager. Someone (swedish)claimed that the municipality of Ballerup contains a border line of outer borders of Copenhagen. I asked on Ballerup's official site however that's true. The city's chief och cityplanning answered me NO-it's not true.

I used this on diskussion page only - my "opponant" used no source what so ever, by the way. Awayanoder (talk) 10:16, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
