Buses in the United Kingdom

Thanks for telling me that I can keep on doing what I would have done anyway through sheer bloodymindedness, lol. I am interested in Buses but I don't always know which chassis or body a bus may be. Also I use the same template when uploading images just changing a few details (you might have noticed this) to make the work slightly less time consuming. I have learned from working with London underground stations that you can't always expect everyone to understand or notice all the categories. Anyway to recap I'll just keep on doing what I've already been doing, lol Oxyman (talk) 22:23, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for replying to me about this!! I know that not all people know exactly what chassis/body a bus is etc! In fact, I'm pretty useless with old buses myself! Of course, if you do know what type a bus is, then feel free to add to to the appropriate category, (which are type, use, year photographed, registration, region, operator). The more you know and add, the less work I have to do lol!! The main thing though is if you can't fully completing adding the categories, then make sure you add it to the main cat. Otherwise it may just get left only half filed and never get found!! Arriva436talk 17:18, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Buses by registration year

Hi Arriva436

As you've been doing some work on the subcategories of Buses in the UK, I thought I'd just mention that I've made some suggestions at Category talk:Buses in the United Kingdom by year of registration to seek your opinion too. Basically, I plan to add sort keys to its subcategories to get them into chronological order (do you agree?) and secondly, hoping to initiate some discussion on what convention we should adopt with Northern Irish and cherished numbers, as there doesn't seem to be a consistent one yet.

Photo of hertiage Fleet RM6 engine on Wiki

Hi

My name is John Christopher and I am writing a new book on London Buses which will be published in 2009. I am contacting you to ask if we could please include your photo: "Arriva Heritage Fleet RM6 engine" which appears on Wikimedia.

All sources will be properly acknowledged and we will make sure you receive a copy of the book when it is printed.

My personal email is jc@airshipinitiatives.com. If you are able to help we would need a reasonably large file, and your address where we should send a book.

Best regards, John C.

Photograph dates

Yes the camera had the wrong date settings! All of the photographs were taken on the dates I have stated in the description section. Unisouth(AC) 21:50, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

OK thanks for confirming - that's excellent help!! Arriva436talk/contribs 22:07, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Old Southern Vectis photos

Hi Arriva436

I noticed you sent a message to User:Iow-Islander about uploading more images of older Southern Vectis buses (e.g. the old bus station, Island Explorer/Route Rouge liveries etc). Anyway I thought I would draw your attention to this photo set on flickr, where most of the images seem to be under a creative commons license which would be suitable to upload to the Commons, such as this one showing the temporary bus lane. Anyway I hope this helps. Editor5807 (talk) 21:22, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for the late reply. They are very interesting pictures. Unfortunately, despite being licensed under a Creative Commons license, they are for non-commercial use, so they can't be uploaded here.
What we really need is to find some decent pictures of the old liveries, rather than me just taking photos of 319 constantly (I wish it would go away!!) The problem is, there aren't any available!
On the theme of historical things, I was wondering whether it would be an idea to capture SV things that will soon be no more. Today I went on a trip to Hefford Road in East Cowes which is soon to have the number 4 taken away from it. Unfortunately, my usual camera is elsewhere in the family so I've had to use a mixture of a not-that-great digital camera and a normal one. How well I've done relies on what happens when they get developed and my scanner!
I was hoping to get to Binstead Estatse but didn't make it. This way, we won't end up not having anything when stuff gets withdrawn, luckily I'd photographed the 27 and 28, but messed up my chance for the 29!
Still, I've got to upload my photos of the Goldline launch first... Arriva436talk/contribs 23:09, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
That sounds good, I was also thinking about photographing route 16 in Oakfield, as this is soon to be diverted away as route 14 is increased to half-hourly, and possibly Island Breezer bus stops at Fort Victoria. Unfortunately I dont have any of the Needles Tour connector routes which have now been withdrawn...Editor5807 (talk) 16:00, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
They are all very good ideas. It's a shame they don't announce changes earlier so we can get photos with more notice!! The Needles Tour connectors are a bit of a bummer, although at IWBuses someone said they're not necessarily gone forever. At least someone uploaded this one for the SBT.
When the Haylands and Binstead replacement service is running I'll try to get some pics. It will be run by Moss Motors coaches. I feel it will be quite important to get this done quickly as it's obvious that SV can get away with diverting the 4 if they introduce it. They don't actually want to do it, they are introducing it on a "trial basis". So soon they will turn around and say not enough people are using it, "Wightbus should consider whether to provide a replacement". Arriva436talk/contribs 21:29, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

On the subject of old photos, I couldn't believe my luck today when I came across this photo on Geograph showing a view (of sorts) of the old Island Explorer livery and also shows the old bus depot at Freshwater! And with the photo of the old bus station it gives a good idea of what the livery looks like overall. Anyway, thought you might like to know. :) Editor5807speak 21:26, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Good news! Thanks for that. Although I'm pretty sure I have seen that photo before somewhere... but I can't think where! Maybe Geograph, but I can't find the one on Commons that in theory Ultra7 should have uploaded?! Arriva436talk/contribs 20:06, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

My Images Violations

Hello Sir/Madam.

I have uploaded several times an Image with violations. Thank you for warning me, because I share my account with my brother (Aimal), my name is Jan.

I am not interested in Buses and Transport, Aimal is very interested in that. But I am interested in Cities and Countries (and Games). I don't normally upload files, but Aimal does upload files alot (most are violations). I only uploaded one Violation (Wembley City logo.png) or something like that.

I now know that my brother uploaded alot of Violations, as I just warned him not to upload more and more. He was just on the PC uploading more buses files.

So please, do call our names for Violations (me, Jan. And my brother, Aimal), so we know who violated things.

Jan

Hi. I suggest you create one account each, so one brother does not get warnings for the other's actions. For the sake of liability, accounts should not be shared. You cannot expect the whole Commons/Wikipedia/whatever community to be aware of who does what, between your brother and you, if you share the same account. Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 12:18, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Hi! Thanks for that. It's very interesting to know that you are both different people. I'll try and call you by your names from now on! As Eusebius has suggested, getting two accounts is a very good idea and will stop any confusions. Arriva436talk/contribs 18:48, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Image renaming

I saw that you tagged a image for rename but your not on the checkpage for the bot (Commons:MediaMoveBot/CheckPage) Please go to the the talk page and put your name up for approval so that the bot can automatically rename your request instead of waiting for someone else on that list to confirm for you. Thanks

Hi Arriva436,

Just to say thanks for all of your expert work on the bus photos I've uploaded.

As you know, I do take the occasional snap of a bus here and there, but apart from that I'm pretty clueless about them, apart from taking the bus to work every day!

Cheers, Benkid77 (talk) 07:10, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

No problem! As you have probably seen, the Buses in the United Kingdom category is for sorting, but unfortunately the editor that set it up has put thousands of images in there, which I've not got time to sort out.
If you could tell me when you upload bus pictures that would be great because then I can sort them! Arriva436talk/contribs 13:38, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Sure, as it happens I snapped six bus photos today:-

I've just sorted these ones out! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:58, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for doing that, I just read your informative text on one of the descriptions, regards Benkid77 (talk) 22:22, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Co-incidentally, I also photographed more London buses yesterday. I just uploaded them today. Not as interesting as the above though, as these ones are just on usual routes in central London. e.g. File:Bus in central London - DSC04241.JPG. There's seven of them in total. I put them all in Category:Buses in the United Kingdom. Also, over the last few weeks, I forgot to mention, I uploaded some pics here Category:Rock Ferry bus depot and also some here:- Category:Blackburn bus station. There's also a few from North Wales I snapped. Anyway there's probably more to look at than anyone would reasonably have time to sort out! Benkid77 (talk) 14:48, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

A couple more buses

Hi again Arriva436,

Today I uploaded photos of a couple more buses at Birkenhead bus station. They are in this new cat I created:-

Thanks for that. I'm busy at the moment, but will hopefully get round to doing them! Arriva436talk/contribs 16:28, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi again, Arriva436 please take your time, I'm sure there's 1001 other things to do - even on commons alone! Here's my next bus pic:-

RF28

Hi, I am just an intrested ex-driver (London Country (1973-1974) at Dunton Green. I have seen your picture of RF 28, which I drove many times. Do you know it present location as it would be nice to see it again. best regards

Ken Austin ken.austin@eds-kent.co.uk

I'm afraid I don't, no. However, my photo shows it at Cobham bus museum, and the bus appears to be active at various rallies and events in the South, so you could perhaps see if it is attending a bus rally near you. Someone at Cobham bus museum may know its present location so it could be worth contacting them. www.lbpt.org/. I hope that helps, Arriva436talk/contribs 18:13, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

More bus photos

Hi again Arriva436,

I attended the "Wirral Bus & Tram Show" on Sunday and did a commonist batch upload of around 70 bus pics. They are currently in this category here Category:Wirral Bus & Tram Show. Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions, a few of the images were slightly marred by rain droplets on the camera lens, although most of them are OK. Anyway you may be interested to take a look.

Best regards, Benkid77 (talk) 09:24, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

OK, thanks for that. It's a lot of photos to sort out...! Unfortualtey I'm still very busy at the moment, but I will get round to it soon... Arriva436talk/contribs 18:12, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Sylvan Drive - route 11

Hi Arriva436

As you know, route 11 is soon to be withdrawn by Southern Vectis. There are some areas which I am assuming this will mean go unserved, such as Sylvan Drive as the route goes out towards Carisbrooke Road. As a result, I got a small opportunity today to take some photos of bus stops and route 11 buses serving this area. However, before I upload them I was a little unsure about whether this area should be classed as Newport or Carisbrooke when naming the images and felt it was important to get this right to follow the theme of image bus stop names. For example, this image which shows Cowes as being the town, Co-Op being the bus stop. I know along Wellington Road, one side of the road is considered Newport, the other Carisbrooke!! So I was wondering how you would name the images if they were your photos of the bus stops along this section of the route? I hope this all makes sense! Thanks Editor5807 (talk) 19:52, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Excellent news. I too assume the routing will be dropped. I don't think it carries many people. The road layout is stupid anyway - when I was on the 11 several cars struggled to get past.
That's a tough one! I would say that the old half would be in Newport, and everything West of that (in the new part), would be Carrisbrooke. Obviously the old part when it was a dead end was only connected to Newport so was therefore less linked to Carrisbrooke. It depends who you ask I would guess, but to get around the problem I would name the images "(Newport OR Carrisbrooke) Sylvan Drive bus stop name.JPG" depending on which section of the estate it is in. Arriva436talk/contribs 22:30, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
As an aside, the SV Newport town map shows the area as "Priory Park", but I've never heard anyone refer to it as such (I've only heard "Sylvan Drive"), and the County Press doesn't throw up any results. Google Earth doesn't seem to know where it is either. Arriva436talk/contribs 22:37, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for that! I should get round to uploading them soon. Editor5807 (talk) 23:33, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

"Buses of" isn't "buses in ... by manufacturer". Some buses made by in the United Kingdom was/is sold outside the United Kingdom. But this buses was built in the United Kingdom. Category "Buses in the United Kingdom by manufacturer" is subcategory for category "Buses of the United Kingdom"!!! Exists more category, see for example: Category:Buses of Germany, Category:Buses of Hungary, Category:Buses of Poland, Category:Buses of Spain. Marek Banach (talk) 10:56, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

OK - I understand now, the new category is for buses built in and made in the United Kingdom. I still think that the name is confusing, so I would propose that Category:Buses of the United Kingdom is moved → to Category:Buses built in the United Kingdom.
This would avoid the confusion between Buses of the United Kingdom and Buses in the United Kingdom. Arriva436talk/contribs 16:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Finglands category

I note there is a duplicate category: Category:Finglands (bus company) and Category:Finglands of Manchester - which would you suggest we keep? Divy (talk) 14:15, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

The latter, Finglands of Manchester. The name is fairly self explanatory, and it has most of the images in it! Arriva436talk/contribs 14:34, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad you agree :) Divy (talk) 15:13, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Empty category

Hi! I reverted this edit [1]. You asked why bots created empty categories. Well if you have questions about a bot just ask the operator :-)

I created a lot of categories (see Commons:Batch_uploading/Geograph/cat-matrix) in a preparation for a huge upload from geograph that contains 1,5 million images (see Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph). If we do not create the categories before images is uploaded, then the images will end up in a few huge categories.

Once images is uploaded most of the categories should contain some images. If some remains empty they could ofcourse be deleted. So at the moment only categories that is not valid should be deleted. Example if there is no mountains in Northern Ireland.

I tried to categorize the new categories during creation. If you find any mistakes you are most welcome to fix them or to leave me a note. --MGA73 (talk) 12:39, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. Fair enough about the Geograph batch upload, but it does get annoying when things just "happen" and others are left to sort it out. I had to go through 50 files, and individually change category, which when all bar two were in England seemed rather pointless at the time. An idea I would suggest for next time is for the edit summary to be more informative, because to me "Automated import of articles" means absolutely nothing. Perhaps the summary could be linked to a page about what is actually happening?
I am interested about this "Geograph batch upload". Presumably it will be the whole collection? This is good, although it's a shame that Geograph images are low resolution. Just some things about the batch upload. Is there a page on Commons where I can read about it and how it's going to happen?
Also, how will the bots (presumably) doing it know whether there is a copy on Commons already. If it's by hyperlink from Commons, then there's a problem, as the back half of Category:Geograph images of buses don't have proper source links, but through a secondary page, which is here. An up-to-date list of the remaining files who haven't been rectified is in my userspace on Wikipedia, here, which I don't mind if anyone updates. I have been working through them to sort it out, and have done the first 200, but others remain incomplete. Could this create lots of duplicates here?
How will the files be named on Commons? If it's just the default Geograph name, then it will be bad for buses as "Bus in Town X.jpg" is nowhere near as much info as what could be given.
Also, will bots do cat sorting, because if hundreds of images get dumped in Category:Buses in the United Kingdom where there's a huge backlog it will be a nightmare.
Images will be left in Category:Buses in England, too, won't they? This will also be a nightmare as sorting is done from the central Buses in the United Kingdom cat and I imagine a hell of a lot of these images being uploaded from Geograph will get lost, half categorised but not in the main cat.
Also, when uploading files from Geograph, will it just take the default "title" on Geograph, or pick up the detailed description? I really hope it's the latter.
Hopefully the batch upload goes well though, apart from that. Thanks for any replies! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:34, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Sorry about the missing edit summary (yes it should have been a link) but things did not go as planed... The original plan was to create categories and get a bot to put excisting images in the right categories just after. Then shortly after we could upload the new ones - in the right categories. But then new server did not come as planed and getting a bot to recategorize images also did also not go just as planed. So thats why you got a chance to do the work ;-)
You can see examples here Category:Images from Geograph needing category review as of 3 December 2009. It looks like the name from Geograph. But additional text is also copied to the file page so we can see it. Feel free to ask questions or make suggestions at Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph.
If it turns out that too many images end up in a wrong category we can use a bot to move them to an other place if that would be a help. But normally it is a help to get images "down". And we still hope to get the bot to assist sorting allready uploaded images from "UK" to "England", "Wales" etc. --MGA73 (talk) 22:58, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
