I rolled back your addition of Speedydelete on this image. This image is being used on a number of different projects and must be replaced or removed before it can be deleted. Therefore, it is not a candidate for speedy deletion. Thank you. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 22:16, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of whether we keep it, it still must be removed from the relevant projects BEFORE it is listed for speedy deletion. Do not list images for Speedy Deletion unless this criteria is met. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 23:08, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your RfA[edit]

You may notice that the 7 day rule is frequently interpreted quite liberally. It ain't over til it's over! You may also notice the note at the top of my talk page that says, "it is not necessary to thank me for voting in your Request for adminship. (So please don't.)". ;)

Whatever the result, I wouldn't be too worried by it. If you keep on working away you will definitely get it next time, no controversy! Just maybe start to take an interest in a few policy-type pages, like the Village pump. Even if you don't have anything to add, you will probably learn plenty. (I know I do.)

Hi! My reading of the permission to use this image is that the author is excluding commercial use. Can you confirm that the author is happy for this image to be used outside of wikipedia. Thanks, JeremyA 14:45, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That was the page that I was reading. However, Howie Berlin says "..used under this license for WIkipedia (only)!" -- I am noting the use of the word only. My question is whether he is aware that, once licenced under this licence, the photo can be used anywhere (even in commercial publications)? Thanks, JeremyA 15:36, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree with Jeremy -- at the moment they sound very much non-free. If you could get a statement confirming that the author understands that they can be used by anyone (ie, outside Wikipedia as well), that would be great. See the Village pump. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:24, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You really need to put a copy of his statement somewhere so it can be verified if needed. Commons can't run on "he said so", I'm afraid. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:26, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He still says "to show my pics on Wikipedia". It's not clear at all to me that he understands that they can be used outside Wikipedia. *shrugs* pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:58, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But we don't accept "Wikipedia only", either! pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Arniep,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:53, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin news[edit]

Hello,

If you consent for statistics to be published about your actions as an administrator, please sign here: Commons:Administrator permission for statistics. (I expect that most people will not have a problem with it unless you are especially concerned with privacy.)

Also, please be aware that we now have a Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Please put it on your watchlist, if you haven't already!

Hi, this photo seem not to be licensed under CC-BY-SA-2.0. It seems that it is licensed under CC-BY-2.0, just like all of Alan Light's photos. I have changed the tag. Regards, Thuresson 13:29, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've dispatched an email to the G8 Russia media department to see if that is the case. I will let you know what they say. --tomf688 (talk - email) 14:55, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That would be premature. There is no evidence to indicate this image is non-free, and, until there is, I see no reason to get rid of it. --tomf688 (talk - email) 19:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know. However, not all Russian government websites have draconian usage restrictons, such as kremlin.ru, which only requires attribution. Furthermore, there is no evidence that this image is violating their terms. There is no harm in waiting for a reply. --tomf688 (talk - email) 01:45, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive me as I'm not exactly sure how or where one can request unprotection for an image on Commons, but I was wondering if you could unprotect Image:Europe location ARM.png - I don't think we'll see a dispute over it any time soon. Kindest regards, Clevelander 15:13, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editors on both sides (on Wikipedia) have agreed to show the maps of these countries as they are now but without the gray so that the view can't tell if they are actually in Europe or Asia. The South Caucasus has always been something of a crossroads. -- Clevelander 02:34, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Ernest Borgnine pics[edit]

Please check the URL that I provided. The photographer sent an email asking that they be deleted. CraneDrawnWell 09:18, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, didn't see that; I've fixed the subject. Although I'd rather you'd set an email address and we discuss this privately, I'll explain here anyway: OTRS received an email from the guy who took the photos explaining that no, he wasn't acting as a US Navy photographer at the time, so it wasn't a work for hire, so they weren't PD and that he still had full copyright, and that the US Navy had made a mistake when they put them up on their website. They'd since removed them and he was asking us to do the same. The person who answered the email wasn't particularly clear when they tried to point this out (which someone will talk to them about), but I don't expect that we'll see too many more mistakes on the part of US Govt. departments and agencies. Thanks, Alphax (talk) 00:23, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Sting2x.jpg[edit]

Hi Arniep, today I uploaded a cropped version of your image:Sting2.jpg under the name image:Sting2x.jpg. Only after uploading I saw that your photo is licenced CC-BY-SA, so the cropped version is not allowed. Sorry for that. I put the new image up for deletion. Again sorry for this violation.. Greetings, M0 22:21, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Weisz3.jpg[edit]

The flickr owner of Image:Weisz3.jpg indicated it may only be used on Wikipedia, meaning he did NOT actually license it under the cc-attribution license. I've marked it with the nld tag because we either need it definitely licensed under the cc or we need to delete it. --68.148.89.74 15:43, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you update/clarify the image description page for this image. It says the author is Tracy Hunter, which implies Hunter is the photographer, which she isn't, since she's in the photo. I'm told here that she lent the camera to somebody else. That's fine, but that should be stated in the image description page. --Rob 04:07, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Silvio Berlusconi 20040318a.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Administrative notice[edit]

Deutsch

Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.

If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.

This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.

This message is sent out by bot. If you want to give feedback on it, you can do so here — 08:50, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Arniep!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Monica_Bellucci_2003.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
