First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Greetings. Thank you for uploading several historical traffic signs of Finland. I am hoping that we can work together on the new signs being introduced in June. If you can find the year that the current sign was introduced, I can rename them in preparation for the new version to be uploaded to Commons. Hello. I noticed that you have been uploading several signs as SVG files, but they actually contain PNG images instead of proper SVG. If you can't create proper SVG, you should ask someone who can, like Fry1989, to do it for you. 01miki10 (talk) 18:18, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I can't create proper SVG. I tried to do that with this software, but I didn't succeed. I think you, or someone you know, can change my uploads into vector format. --Arkke (talk) 14:35, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, it is better to upload files in PNG format, eventually someone may create a SVG version of it. Fry1989 is already replacing your uploads. I also tested that converter, and it only seems to create SVG files with an embedded PNG image. 01miki10 (talk) 19:56, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, there are many signs uploaded by me in Category:Diagrams of historic road signs of Finland, 2020 set, especially several warning and mandatory signs. Fry1989, you can change their format to SVG. --Arkke (talk) 13:14, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The signs are downloadable in SVG and a few other formats. There are many versions included in the folders not shown on the website, such as File:Finland road sign C46-4.svg. I am trying to be thorough, so it is a slow process. Fry1989 eh? 19:15, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
