2014[edit]

--Christian Ferrer (talk) 09:13, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

VIC Pycnodonte vesicularis[edit]

Hallo Archaedontosaurus. I not a specialist in fossil oisters, but I want to make an annotation to your picture of Pycnodonte vesicularis. The way it is depicted shows a shape that have many Pycondonts and Gryphaeids. The main character, as far as I can see, in the difference of Gryphaea and Pycnodonte is the shape of the left (=larger) shell. The Gryphaeid shell is more slender (see e.g http://www.mf2607.org/photJHR/Gryphaea%20gigantea.htm) whereas the shell of Pycnodonte is more broader (see e.g. http://salenia.de/01mus04.jpg). Unfortunately this difference is not visible in your specimen. I think it would be better to add an on top view of the left shell to show the differences. Greetings --Llez (talk) 14:01, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Template[edit]

Hello! All of VI or QI categories should be hidden. Before my edits, some of VI categories didn't have template VI-cat but they have hiddencat tag (HIDDENCAT). Category Valued images of sculptures didn't have both tags. This category must be hidden, because all other categories by subject (VI or QI) are hidden. Look here: Valued images of architecture. I did not edit this category, but it has a VI-cat. So, I fixed the mess with VI categories (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Valued_images_by_subject) and now all of them looks the same. I hope that you understand this. Best regards, Halavar (talk) 11:08, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Euphorbia avasmontana[edit]

Hallo Archaedontosaurus, I think "flowers" would not be (botanically) correct, for Euphorbias have no real flowers (in botanical sense) as "reproductive units" but a special form, called "Cyathium" (plural "Cyathia"). Please have a look at [1] for more information. In my former VI / VIS-nominations it was never a problem (see [2], [3][4]), the term "Cyathia" was accepted. If it is necessary, I will change to "Flowers", but this would be botanically incorrect. --Llez (talk) 11:27, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you you taught me something. I suck in botany. My only raport with this science is mowing my lawn. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 11:32, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Scope change for AcroDanceHandstand.jpg[edit]

Hi Archaeodontosaurus. I narrowed the scope of VI candidate AcroDanceHandstand.jpg. In light of this, would you please reconsider your opposition? If you still oppose, can you recommend an appropriate scope? This is the first time I've nominated and I'm still learning the ropes. Thanks. Lambtron (talk) 14:28, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This category is too broad for us to find an image that can represent. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 15:36, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean that the image can never be VI because there is no scope narrow enough for it? Or are you saying that the scope "handstands on floors" is still too broad? If it's the latter, would you be kind enough to suggest a satisfactory scope? I have read all about scope criteria -- several times -- and believe "handstands on floors" is appropriate, but you don't seem to agree and I don't know why not, or what to do to fix the problem. This is my first VI candidate and I would really appreciate some help and advice. Lambtron (talk) 14:45, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is very difficult, the general scope still pose the same problems. Why this file:Arctocephalus pusillus in Tobu Zoo Park 002.jpg rather than that file:Fremont Solstice Parade 2007 - gymnasts 08.jpg. There is too much subjectivity. We went in discussions mode to have time to think together about a scope. Other advice would be welcome. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 15:04, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I recently added geolocation as suggested by Yann. Since you are still opposed, I assume you continue to believe that this image is not the best in scope, but I have no idea why. Would you be kind enough to tell me which other images have equal or better value, and why? That would give me useful insights into the VI evaluation process and might help me make better judgments about VI candidates. Lambtron (talk) 22:29, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This issue seems to be resolved for now, but I'm still very interested in understanding your viewpoint because of the valuable insights I might gain. I realize we are separated by a language barrier, so please tell me if anything is unclear and I will try to rephrase it. I agree that "butterfly", "car", and "sunset" cannot have VIs, because those categories have thousands of images in hundreds of subcategories -- far too many to choose from objectively. However, "handstands on floors" has only 37 images, and no subcategories. Furthermore, most of those images have no VI potential, leaving only a few to compare and choose from -- a seemingly simple task. Nevertheless, you seem quite certain this is impossible. Can you help me understand why "handstands on floors" is too broad to have a VI? Lambtron (talk) 20:02, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I give, every day , 3 hours working our Wikipedia project. I always have in mind the need to do well for this project can continue to live in the future . One of the problems we already have, but that will become increasingly important is the management of the huge amount of photography that we have to manage. That is why I am very attentive , management , categories and gallery . But especially VI label , is for me the most important. The idea is to promote a lot of picture with the label VI . This requires specific scopes. To anticipate conflicts. When a scope is too open it potentially kills the other images in the category . That's the general framework of the problem. In your case , the category is not very important. I usually lift the negative vote, but I wanted to provoke debate . As you have seen it is very difficult to do because few of us are interested . I am not surprised whatsoever Jebulon and Yan who have given their opinion because they are also involved in this discussion. Come back often VI . Pugnacity you showed to defend your image, show your interest in the project . (sorry for my bad english )--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 10:00, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification, Archaeodontosaurus. There's no need to apologize for your English -- it's much better than my French! I didn't realize your objection was based on anticipation of hypothetical future conflicts because you never said that before now, and also because VI criteria seems to only say that we should evaluate existing images, and how to do that. I understand now that you have dealt with this in good faith. I have no hard feelings and wish you the best of luck. Lambtron (talk) 17:38, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Archaeodontosaurus,
there is a problem with this VI. A nice guy told me, that the Taxa, file description and therefore also the Category is wrong and he changed it. But it was already VI. So my question is how to deal with it: I think the Category can't be changed on an existing VI. Can the tag be removed and the file than be nominated again, but in the correct Category now? Cheers, --P e z i (talk) 10:47, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter
One must be very careful and do not rush to change.Tthere beaucop changes that are not consensual. At the moment I advise you to wait: COMMONS, and the 3 main encyclopaedias (en, de, fr) have to change the name of the species. If the work is effective when a redirection trick. Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

J'ai vu ça, oui. Bof.

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Organ of Chiesa di San Salvador[edit]

Again about your photo, based on a calculation of the proportion that I made with a program of multimedia-editing, I think that the size for the correct perspective proportions would be 3.970 x 6.640. --Vanzanten (talk) 03:31, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This program looks interesting what is it?--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:03, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
GIMP, is a free-ware. Using grid, rules and a bit of experience is possible to estimate, with good approximation, sizes and proportions. --Vanzanten (talk) 15:11, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be interested. Thank you. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 16:01, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. :-) I suggest to upload this version, in which I adjusted perspective and proportions and I cleaned the colours. --Vanzanten (talk) 17:35, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
